6: Friday 27th September 2013

From the Headmaster

“Obras en la Panamericana”: Communication #2 (Friday 27th September, 2013)

A big thank you to all members of our communities for the responsible and collaborative way that the traffic situation has been dealt with. Working together we can improve the experience for everyone.

The Fovial engineers confirm that they are still working to the dates already announced but they will be adjusting the situation as the need arises. Please consult the local press for up to date information - if we have information from them which impacts our traffic we shall also let you know.

Please note:

  1. Our community is receiving help from the PNC at the junction of 17th avenue and Calle El Carmen before the start of our schools. We are requesting more help during other peak times.
  2. Each school is making their own arrangements to have staff on duty to look after children on arrival. At the ABC, staff will be on duty from 6:10 am in the Primary School corridors and the Learning Resources Centre is opening from 6:10am also.
  3. The ABC is asking its students to arrive by 6:50am. This is to separate each school’s arrival time as much as possible so as to minimize the impact of each other’s traffic.
  4. The traffic staff are working for our benefit. Please respect their instructions at all times, without regard of which school they work for. Smiles and kind words inspire each of them to work harder for the safety of our students.
  5. We ask drivers to be particularly careful around the roads and entrances to our schools. We have noted the following behaviours which could be highly dangerous:
    1. drivers talking and texting on mobile phones whilst still or driving;
    2. drivers parking on the road and walking their children across the path of cars;
    3. drivers making sharp turns in high vehicles which have blind spots;
    4. drivers blocking junctions and entrances.

Do not be distracted and remain alert - do not put any member of our communities at risk by such actions.

Thank you to all members of our community for the patience shown - and for driving safely.

Any comments should be sent to trafico@abc-net.edu.sv

Peace One Day
We hope you enjoyed the international day of peace last Saturday. This day has become an important day for us as it provides an opportunity both to celebrate the peace we enjoy in our country as well as the peace which is important to us in our school community.

Know Your School Events next week
Please note these take place for all grades over the next two weeks. The meetings start at 6.30 which is an hour later than originally planned because of the traffic problems we are currently experiencing. After the initial meeting there will be an opportunity to meet all of your son or daughters teachers for a few minutes to find out how the year has started. We ask you to see as many of your son or daughter’s teachers as you possibly can

Extra Curricular
The next round of extra curricular activities starts on Monday 14th October and we will be talking about options and possibilities over the next week or so.

Basketball court
We are pleased to announce that the main outdoor basketball court will be reopening on Monday. It will mean much easier access around the campus but we do want to say how well the students have coped with the restricted access and evacuation routes.

Life Skills and the ABC
All our students study Life Skills as an essential element of their ABC education. We would like to point out that this course is fully integrated into our values and traits which you can see in the diagram below and covers a range of activities under the following broad categories: Health and safety, Character Building, Relationships, Careers and academic success, Citizenship (Global and local). This programme is delivered by a variety of people including Heads of Year, Mrs. Sol, Mr. Keslake, the Learning Support Unit, as well as various professional outside agencies. We continue to develop this programme but we also seek to ensure our school traits and values are constantly promoted and developed through all aspects of our school curriculum.
