26: Friday 6th March 2015

From the Director

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Primary Book Week such a fun event. On behalf of the many guest readers I want to say how fantastic this event has been and we hope it has inspired our children too! On that note if anyone has a copy of the Gruffalo (“El Grufalo”) book in Spanish can you please let me know as a PK class would like to read it!

You might be interested to read about the Academia Britanica Cuscatleca making the local newspaper El Diario de Hoy following its recent Mathcounts success (page 56 in todays newspaper or see this link)

Every year, for 15 years now, 7 or 8 bilingual schools collaborate for intensive training in the various arts: visual arts, dance, drama, music. The aim is to offer our students an opportunity for highly demanding technical and creative training that they normally would not get within their own school. The work done within the festival ought to be reflective of the best each school can offer, and when these inspired students come together, guided by professional teachers in each field, it's is supposed to produce amazing results, and usually it does.

Last week, the visual arts students from the various schools came to ABC to create some wonderful pieces that you will see displayed in the lobby of Teatro Presidente on 6 & 7 March.

For the past week, dance and drama students have been training intensively at the ABC for a concert to be held tonight (Friday, 6 March) in Teatro Presidente at 6pm. This concert will feature freshly choreographed and devised pieces by the students themselves. Entrance is free.

For the past month, musicians and singers have been training for the concert that will be held tomorrow (Saturday, 7 March) in Teatro Presidente at 6pm. This concert will feature primary choir, secondary choir, concert band and string orchestra. Entrance is free.

We hope that the ABC community will come to support the students and appreciate their creativity and skills. May the culture of artistic expression continue to flourish in El Salvador!

General Parents Meeting
On behalf of the Board of Governors of the school I would like to invite you to the parents’ information meeting to be held at the school’s Performing Arts Centre (PAC), at 18:00 hours on Wednesday 18th March 2015. Should there not be 50% plus 1 of all parents present, the meeting will reconvene at 18:30 hours on the same day and proceed with those in attendance.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

The Primary Spring Fair was fully supported last Saturday and at the latest count about 10,000 dollars was raised for a very good cause. Thank you for all your support with prizes and items for the tombola. The children did a great job making and running their stands and a very good time was had by all.

We have had such an exciting week and I am sure you have seen your children reading and being read to a lot more. A big thank you to those parents who came in and read or told a story to the class and to those members of the rest of the school community who came in too. A special thank you to Mr Pattenden who took responsibility for organising the week and did such an excellent job.

This afternoon the Grade 1 students are going to be spending the night in the PAC for a whole grade sleepover. The teachers are all prepared with activities and snacks and I am sure the students will have a wonderful time. I understand the PAC can get a bit smelly with all those children in there overnight, so we will make sure the doors have been open for a little while before you come to collect them!

The Primary choir will be participating in the Bicultural Festival tomorrow night. Do try to go along and see them. The performance starts at 6.00 in the Teatro Presidente.

Next week the Pre-K swimming lessons can be watched by parents. Please see the schedule below. In the lessons I have watched they have had a fantastic time and are developing water confidence at every turn. A delight to see.

Have another great week.

E-safety Training for Parents
E-safety Support is an online service that offers advice on e-safety practice to schools, students, parents and teachers.

It charges for much of the material/support offered, but some resources are free. One such free, and very good, resource that is available from E-safety Support is an e-safety training module for parents.

The course takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and provides guidance to parents on:
  • how children use the internet;
  • online safety; and,
  • it offers advice on how parents can protect their children whilst online.
The link to the main E-safety Support website is:

Once you have registered (by entering a few details about yourself) you can access the course by clicking on the link ‘Preview : E-safety Training for Parents’ on the right of the page (see image above with link circled in red - this link is only in English).

The Grade 6 and Grade 7 Parent Partnership Meeting (with Cal 2 Reports), previously scheduled for the evening of Tuesday 17th March, is now happening on Tuesday 24th March (having been combined with the Grade 8 Parent Partnership Meeting). The reason for this change is to accommodate the Art Exhibition. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused by this change of date.
