31: Friday 5th May 2017

From the Director

I would like to be one of the first people to wish ALL the mothers in our community a Happy Mother’s Day next Wednesday. Thank you for all you do. It seems to me this is an ideal day for us to think about our role as parents and the importance of parenting and for me the vital importance of schools and parents working together. In today’s world all of us need to be child centred in our decision making and support for the future generations. I have been watching the teen series 13 Reasons Why over the last few weeks because I am aware that many teenagers have watched and it has a disturbing subject line - teenage suicide. For me the series shows the crucial importance of teamwork - parents working together, parents working with school, school talking to parents and all of us creating safe places for children to talk and have healthy fun! I think parenting is the ultimate human experience but it is an increasingly difficult role in our complex society and it is essential it is not done in isolation but with each other so it includes all aspects of a child’s life. Please be aware that we have support at school ready for any help you might need. Please also note school will be closed for Mother’s Day on Wednesday as it is a national holiday but IGCSE and IB exams will continue.

I know most of you are aware that the ABC is a member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) which validates our ABC graduation certificates and helps us develop as a school with international values and perspective. In two weeks time we have an official CIS visit to ascertain that we are on track in terms of the CIS standards. Some of you and your children will meet the visiting team and we will be reporting on their findings in due course. If you are interested in CIS you can see the links on our website.

I would like to remind Exabrits that the Headmaster’s Reception is only four weeks today and we would love to see all of you there. I would also like to make a special invitation to the classes of 2012, 2007, 2002, 1997, 1992, 1987 and 1982 to join us to celebrate their anniversaries and to participate in some inter grade activities. Please come along and have fun. Remind your friends from your grade! You do need to let us know that you are coming by informing Anabella Soto either via her email, anabellasoto@abc-net.edu.sv or by phoning her directly at school (2201-6208). We look forward to seeing many of you there to welcome the class of 2017 into the Exabrit community and reminding ourselves of our shared hopes for the future!

We have started pre enrolment for next year. Please ensure you do so to reserve your place for next year and also inform us if you do not need the place so we can offer places from our waiting lists. We do still have some places available in some grades for parents - especially those from our community.

As part of our school’s security measures, we have designed a new car pass. We are giving out one per family during the pre-enrollment process and additional ones can be purchased in caja for $1. Please make sure you remove the previous car pass and collect the new one, as our security guards will be making sure all our cars have them.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

I would just like to start by saying how much I enjoyed the Sound of Music last week. It was the best school show I have seen. Congratulations to Ms Dee Leong and to all the cast and crew; particularly our primary students who were excellent.

I have been able to observe a few more of the Lower Primary swimming lessons this week. Well done to all the students who are taking part.

On Saturday morning it is the team building activity in preparation for the annual UK trip. The UK trip has been a highlight for Primary students for many years now and continues to be very popular. As this year’s group makes their final preparations, checking documents and reminders about looking after their money, I would like to remind students and parents of our current 4th grade that the letter for next year’s trip will be going out in August along with the Mammoth Ski trip invitation for next years 4th and 5th Grade. These trips are fantastic but can be expensive so it is a good idea to plan ahead financially.

On Wednesday it will be Mother’s Day and the school will be closed. I wish all of our mothers a very happy day.

At the end of the month, the 26th May, it will be our Latin Music Night, when our students from across the school perform with a thoroughly latin flavour. We will also have a popular local band performing with the students and rounding off the evening with some dancing. Everyone is welcome.

Prepa to 5th grade will also be starting a whole school IPC unit on water on the 19th May. this will be the final unit of the year. The entry point is designed to capture students interest and enthuse them for their learning and the staff are currently planning a most interesting introduction to the various concepts the students will cover. I will keep you updated!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sharon Short
Head of Primary and Primary Safeguarding Officer.

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

I would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Arévalo and the IGCA team for organising the events around Earth week and promoting our value of being Responsible regarding how we look after our planet, starting by reducing, reusing and recycling around our school campus. You can see some pictures of the activities they organised and in particular, I would like to ask you to check out our “Recycling centre” which is being developed and is already in use! We encourage students to use these recycling bins and as parents you are also welcome to send in your recyclable waste. In so doing, as a community we can teach our youngsters about this simple strategy to help our environment.

We regret to say that we had to cancel our Parent Partnership evening last Thursday which was aimed at G9, G10, G11 and G12 parents regarding dealing with the issues raised in the popular Netflix series “13 reasons why.” It was sad for us to have to inform those parents who did sign up that there was not enough interest generated among the parents to be able to run this session. These “Parent Partnership” events are essentially a ‘school for parents.’ As a school we are committed to the wellbeing and protection of our students and we believe that working together as a community, informing ourselves and sharing our concerns we will be able to better accomplish our mission. We are happy to say that we have reached the minimum attendance required for our next “Parent Partnership Evening next Thursday 11th of May which was aimed at G6, G7 and G8 parents so we confirm this session will go ahead. I would like to thank our LSU team for working to adapt the presentation to suit all grades and we urge parents to sign up for the session by contacting Marielos Soto (marielossoto@ab-net.edu.sv)

There are also three other meetings for parents next week. Monday we have the University counselling department offering an information session for parents of Grade 11 regarding the application process at 6,00 pm in the PAC and on Thursday the Spanish department will hold an information session for parents of G8 to G11 regarding a trip which is being offered to Spain in the next academic year. Mrs Rossi’s message below:

“We are pleased to invite your son or daughter to widen their academic knowledge in Spain. This trip is designed to enrich our students’ theoretical knowledge of the literary works of the author Federico García Lorca, as part of their curricular developments in the iGCSE and IB programme. Please join us on Thursday 11th of May in the ABCLT (before the 6.00 pm Parent Partnership in the PAC.)”

I wish you a wonderful weekend and a happy Mother’s day,

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón
