33: Friday 19th May 2017

From the Director

The final group of the Class of 2017 finished their IB exams this morning and can now look forward to graduation and their results. Completing the IB Diploma is a real achievement and one that every member of the Class of 2017 should be proud. Many of the top universities around the world including MIT, Oxford and Cambridge regard the IB as the best possible preparation for university study. The Class of 2019 continue with their IGCSE examinations for another couple of weeks before they embark on their IB programme.

We have had CIS visitors in school this week and it has been very interesting for us to discuss our school and its programmes with international colleagues and experts. The ABC benefits enormously from its links with other international schools and its commitment to providing the highest quality world class education.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Digital Video Awards last night which were amazing and it was nice to see some entries from other schools in the city. A huge thank you to Jennifer Garcia for all her work preparing for the event and to Victor Hugo from the Class of 2017 who managed to find time to direct the whole event while completing his exams. I would also like to thank Adrian Hall who was an amazing compere.

As a final note I really enjoyed watching the Pre Kinder swimming lesson on Wednesday with so many parents present. The sense of triumph as they surpassed their own expectations was brilliant to see and they were so proud swimming in front of their parents. Well done to everyone involved!

As advance warning please note the school is closed to students for staff inservice training on Wednesday May 31st. Please also remember to let us know if you are attending the Headmaster’s Reception on Friday 2 June. All Exabrits are invited but need to let us know in advance that you are coming.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week our Prepa students toured the city looking at the wide variety of buildings in the area as part of their IPC unit on buildings. It has been reported to me that they learned a lot, behaved extremely well and asked really good questions. Well done to all of Prepa.

Congratulations to the winners of the DVA awards last night. Particularly our Primary winners who showed determination and creativity to produce their videos.

Today we have had the Prepa to 5th IPC unit on Water entry point. Everyone enjoyed the day and found out what it is like to have to fetch and carry enough water for the family needs. Around the world many many people have to do this every day and we are so lucky to be able to turn on the tap. Please ask your children how the event went.

Next Friday is the Latin Music night. Entry is free and refreshments will be on sale. We have a range of performances from Primary students of all ages and a professional band for us to dance to. We hope to see you all there.

Towards the end or term we will have the Effort leads to Success assemblies when we recognise the efforts our students have made. Please make a note in your diaries and make sure you support your children at these events.

We are increasing our safeguarding team. Ms Ana Mena and Ms Edda Padilla are now deputy safeguarding officers and can be contacted about any safeguarding/child protection concerns either in or out of school.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Sharon Short
Head of Primary and Primary Safeguarding Officer.

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

It really has been another busy and successful week in Secondary! As you have read in Mr Keslake’s message, our Grade 12 completed their examinations today and we now look forward to the events around their graduation in the next few weeks, starting with the Senior Entrance and Last Day of School on Friday 26th of May. Please also make a note of the Graduation Day for the Class of 2017 which is later than usual this year on Thursday 22nd June.

Our Grade 10 students continue with their IGCSE exams which seem to have got off to a very good start.

We had an amazing university fair yesterday in school and it was great to see parents and students together visiting stalls and discussing possibilities. There were approximately sixty universities attending from different parts of the world and we had schools from many parts of the city joining us. These events provide a unique opportunity for you as parents to visit many universities in one afternoon and you do not have to wait until your child is in Grade 11. We had many students and parents from Grade 9 yesterday which is particularly good to see. We want to ensure we help you get the best possible advice regarding university options after the ABC. Our university guidance team is there to support you all the way.

Can I also add my congratulations to all the students who participated in the digital Video Awards last night. It was great to see examples of ABC traits shining through! A big thank you to the support team who made it all happen.

Finally I would like to say that even though it may seem the school year is nearly over, we do still have 5 weeks to go and these include many events and opportunities for learning. It is important that we work together right to the end, collaborating and supporting school events and regulations, including attendance, punctuality and uniform. Thank you in advance for your support!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón
