27: Friday 23rd March 2018

From the Director

I would like to begin by thanking everyone who has supported Teleton over the last few weeks. The children have been given the opportunity to purchase t-shirts and other merchandise to support the national Teleton Appeal. Across the school we managed to raise $8,564 which was an increase on last years total. Thank you for all of your contributions. Well done ABC!

We have noticed less vehicles arriving early this week and I would like to thank those of you who adhered to my request last week.

It was a pleasure to welcome many parents to the Annual Meeting earlier this week where we presented news on the school’s plans for next year. We are very excited to be able to confirm our building projects for this coming summer holidays have been approved. We are going to be rebuilding our Secondary Mathematics and Science classrooms to provide up to date, flexible learning spaces and laboratories in line with promoting creativity and student engagement. We are also going to remodel our front entrance and Administrative building to make a more controlled and safer entrance area. In the sports area we are going to be installing lights to allow matches to take place after sunset and prolong training opportunities. We are also looking to appoint a Head of Sports to oversee and integrate the sports programme across the school.

This has been a very interesting term with many activities and successes. Our school continues to be a reflective community which places the highest priority on learning and all of us play a part in sustaining that focus within our community. You as parents are vital in the support you provide to your children and our school. We hope all of you have a reflective and happy time together this holiday, enjoying the triumphs and progress of your children.

As a final note can I remind you that We will Rock You is busy rehearsing for the shows in our first week back. We are all looking forward to the shows. Make sure you get your tickets!

Primary News

In primary, we have had a very busy week, with a host of events and celebrations as well as class trips.

We would like to say a big thank you to all our families who supported Teleton this year. The Primary School did a great job and it has been amazing to hear the children talk about the importance of the event. You can see some of our children at the national event last weekend.

This week PK Rampone went to visit a farm, as the children were interested in learning about farm animals and the class have been creating projects based on this subject. It was a very hands on experience for children. They were able to touch the animals, learn a little bit more about their behaviour and the products we get from some of them. They saw how to milk a cow and then the process of making cheese (cuajada) and cream. They had a wonderful day and are inspired to learn more!

On Saturday Lower Primary celebrated their Sports and Family Day. Thank you to the parents for adjusting to the last minute change of timings, it was much better finishing earlier in the day before the weather got hotter. Congratulations to all of the children who participated with so much energy and enthusiasm. Please visit the PE Blog for more photos. https://pe-sw-abc.blogspot.com/

Also this week we have participated in the celebration of International Down Syndrome Day taking place around the world. To raise awareness of the Paraiso Down foundation, students from the ABC Secondary section have sold t-shirts to raise money. In class, the children watched a video and discussed the great work the charity does.

It’s nearly Easter and the Lower Primary children have been on their annual Easter Egg Hunt! Kinder have been listening to clues left by the Easter Bunny to help them find more…

This week, we had our final Lower Primary swimming lessons and also Grade 1 to Grade 5 have been participating in their annual ABC Swimming Galas. With a combination of races, relays and fun activities, the children have worked together to score as many points as they can for their tribe. Even with the last minute change to have the events earlier in the morning, we had a great turn out from parents - thank you! The students were ready and raring to go. They enjoyed the chance to compete for their tribe and cheer for their friends. All of the staff were very impressed by the high standard of the children’s swimming skills and their confidence, congratulations to the ABC swimming coaches. At the end of the competition, medals were awarded to the students with the fastest times in their given stroke. The results for the winning tribes were as follows:
The Overall Winner for the Upper Primary Tribal Swimming Gala was PIPILES
(219 points).

Well done to all that have taken part and earned points for their tribe. For more photographs of the Swimming Gala events please visit the ABC Primary PE Blog

This week the Primary Section have been creating Easter Baskets for our Superior staff to say thank you for all of their hard work. The staff work tirelessly to support us in maintaining a safe and inviting environment for the children. Thank-you very much if you have donated to these baskets.

Finally, we have had some cases of head lice in the primary school. Please help us by regularly checking your child’s hair and treating any outbreak immediately. Children should not come back into school until they are head lice free.

Happy Holidays,

Marianne Taylor & Tom McNeil

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

The end of our second term is here and it has been a whirlwind of activity and excitement and a lot of learning! It has been a time of giving at school and in Secondary you can see in the news below how many initiatives our students have been involved in, where the end result has been generous donations and making a difference in people’s lives. The Teletón, Paraíso Down support, the French activity and the class of 2022 collecting donations! We are very proud of our ROCs!

8th Grade Giving Back
From Mrs. Soriano- Head of Year of Class 2022
During February the Class of 2022 collected food and toiletries to donate to Corazones Solidarios Foundation. Thank you very much to all the students for their donations.

On Saturday 17th, a group of girls and their mothers presented the donation to the foundation’s representatives on behalf of the Class of 2022.

During the morning, we went to Corazones Solidarios and the girls helped prepare the toiletry kits, and cook breakfast for the mothers who look after their children at the Benjamin Bloom hospital. We then travelled to the hospital to hand in the breakfasts, and spend time with the kids who are at the moment undergoing treatment in the BB hospital, and with their mothers- Once again, our students displayed each of our ABC values.

Thank you, Class of 2022!

Donación de los alumnos de Francés
The students from 10th grade French organized an activity during the STEAM Fest. They have been doing this activity since they were in 8th grade, raising money making crepes and they donate the proceedings to the social service they are involved in, and this year they decided to donate food to the Hogar Infantil Adalberto Guirola, an orphanage in Santa Tecla.

The donation is the result of a group of 10th graders in French class who worked during the STEAM Fest. This donation was presented to the orphanage last Friday, 16th March. In the picture you can see the Director, Karen Liseth Melara, MD, who accompanied us.

Francophonie

Poets of Music
From Maria Eugenia Rossi- HoD Spanish
The Spanish department continues to promote the poetry contest ‘Los poetas de la música’ (Poets of Music). Very enthusiastically the students have been creating musical calligrams, odes to musical instruments, quintets about pentagrams, and some to the rhythm of inspiring music.

We hope this activity motivates them during the Easter holidays, to write poems to participate in the contests.

Below you will be able to see the pictures, and we are also sharing with you the link to the Spanish page where you can find the contest rules.

Olympic Torch
De Sara Suster- Coordinadora de Team Sports
Opening of the LVII Student Games of La Libertad, where Guillermo Alcides Reyes Villalta from 6th grade was elected by the INDES to represent the Academia Británica Cuscatleca. Congratulations!

This Tuesday the Grade 9 IGCSE Drama class presented their second piece of coursework. Their performance was written and directed entirely by themselves and was inspired by Central American folklore.

The performance was hardhiting and thought provoking for actors and audience alike.

The grade 9 Drama students are proving themselves to be a very talented group!

I wish you all a wonderful Easter break with your family and see you back in school, bright and early before 7.00 am on Monday 9th of April!

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón

26: Friday 16th March 2018

From the Director

It has been a very interesting week in school including some excellent sport. Well done to everyone involved. Rehearsals are continuing at great pace place for our musical We will Rock You which is happening soon after our Easter break. Please get your tickets!

This week we witnessed the excellent IB Art Exhibition in the PAC which closes today. You can see some of the work on the Newsblog but, as with all art, the exhibition was best seen first and we are looking forward to the Lower Primary sports morning tomorrow. For health and safety reasons we are starting the event early as we do not want children to be exposed to the strong sun in the middle of the day and specifically between 10 am and 2 pm. The sun’s rays are especially strong and potentially damaging at this time of year. Please keep your children out of the sun between these hours over the weekend.

I have a very simple message this week. I am extremely concerned at the number of cars that are arriving early for pick ups at school. Cars in line, engines running unnecessarily are a health and security risk. Cars lined up outside school, often arriving 30 minutes prior to pick up cause delays and last week I was informed that if we called an ambulance to school it would be unable to arrive quickly because of the cars blocking our access. I find it sad to think that our parents are queuing up outside school for hours on end a week are blocking our access in the event of an emergency. This could lead to very serious consequences for one of our community one day! Please think about this! Equally it must be frustrating for you sitting outside for so long. The number of cars with engines running is also increasing pollution rates in our area. This is bad for all our health and the well being of our planet.

The good news is this can all be easily avoided. On behalf of the whole community I am asking that you do not arrive at school until your designated pick up time which are shown below.

Pre Kinder 12.15 pm. Please do not arrive before 12 noon
Kinder 12.45 pm. Please do not arrive before 12.30 pm
Prepa 1.15 pm. Please do not arrive before 1 pm
First grade 1.30 pm. Please do not arrive before 1.20 pm
2nd to 5th Grade 1.50 pm. Please do not arrive before 1.40 pm at PAC Car Park
Secondary (Admin) 2 pm. Please do not arrive before 2 pm to allow Primary access
Secondary (PAC) 2.20 pm. Please do not arrive before 2.20 pm
EC/Team Sports 3 pm. Please do not arrive before 2.50 pm

Please note that we may be forced to ask people who arrive early to move on rather than continue allowing emergency access routes to be blocked.

I look forward to seeing many of you in the sports field tomorrow morning. I am sorry for another early start but please be punctual so we can avoid the heat of the day.

All parents are invited to the Convocatoria on Monday at 6 pm in the PAC to hear about our plans for next year. We will be explaining our new Science and Maths developments in the Secondary School, improvements to our drop off and pick up areas as well as lighting for the school field.

I do hope you have a lovely weekend with your children.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

We had a fantastic day last Friday with our STEAMfest. All of the students made a great effort and those whose projects were voted for in Primary were presented in the PAC and other areas around the school. Our Primary Science Club extra and ICT department also had displays. The students all had a great time and learned a lot. We were impressed by the secondary escorts who helped our youngest children find their way round. Thank you to everyone who supported the event. I am sure there are lots of pictures on the class blogs but here is a selection from Grade 1. As you can see the children were able to tell me all about the things they had learnt. I was very impressed.

Lower Primary Swimming lessons for parents to watch continue. The children are generally very confident and enjoy their lessons very much. As I see each grade group I can see their stamina, skills and proficiency improve each year. All next week it will be the Upper Primary swimming galas. We have already completed the heats so there will be some finals, the relay and some fun swim activities for each grade. Please make sure you have your own personal sunscreen on when you come to watch.

There has been a warning given about spending too much time in the sun this year. We have known for a while that too much exposure to sun can cause skin and other damage. We do need enough sun for vitamin D production though, which fights colds and other illness. In school we are responding to the warning by keeping the children in the shade as much as possible. Please apply minimum factor 30 sun cream to your children before coming into to school so that all bases are covered. Please also see the additional note below.

Grade 2’s Chocolate Unit exit point reached new heights today when the whole of Upper Primary took part in a ‘flash mob’ chocolate dance. It was a really enjoyable event and reminded the students of when they studied chocolate in the past. The parents also took part after they had been amazed by the students learning exhibition and the students presentations. Please see our blogs for photos.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sharon Short
Head of Primary

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

I would like to start by thanking all the staff involved in SteamFest, our Science fair and our Mathscounts and Hacia Democracy educational trips as well as our Art Department for the wonderful G12 Art Exhibition. It has been an incredibly jam packed and fun-filled week! Below you can read about some of the things that have been happening.

PE Special reminders
From Ms Hernandez- Head of Secondary PE
Caps during PE lessons. Following the health and safety recommendations given by the Government, we remind you that caps are part of our PE kit and students must bring it for every PE lesson. Please ensure that your son/daughter follow this expectation, otherwise your child won’t be able to participate. We really need your support regarding this expectation to take care our students.

Please note that due to the high risk in the next weeks, we will not allow students to be out in the sun during lunchtime.

Uniforms on theme days. As a school we support many initiatives and we celebrate theme days throughout the year but we expect to follow our agreed uniform policy at all times. On theme days, if students have PE lesson they must bring their PE kits including: proper sports trainers, shorts and ankle socks to ensure their safety when they practice on lessons.

Our delegates were involved in a range of committees that were designed for the purpose of exploring democracy, problem solving, collaborating and debating, with the hopes of solving a number of critical issues. Committees that our students were members of included; the Pan American Health Organization, the Inter-American Committee on Science and Technology, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the Crisis Cabinet, Brazil 1937.

Special recognition goes to Carlos Vasquez for winning an Honourable Mention award as best delegate for Court- Congratulations!

Grade 12 - IB Art Exhibition
From Ms Carmen Chávez- Pastoral Coordinator and Art teacher
On Tuesday the Grade 12 HL Art students had their culmination cocktail, where they presented the work they have done for the past 2 years. This is part of their IB requirement and is worth 40% of their final mark. This talented group of students have been working hard for the past 4 years when they did their IGCSE’s, and with their results at the end of Grade 10 they raised the world average for Art at the ABC.

They are dedicated, they are very talented and extremely creative and a lovely group to teach. I am very proud of their work, the quality of the pieces is really high and I believe a lot of them with be able to get scholarships with their portfolio. The IB is a very demanding programme but at the end I can say they have all achieved a great success and it’s very rewarding to see that they have all achieved a fantastic collection of art pieces.

I wish them the best for the future, I know they will succeed not only as artists but as responsible outstanding citizens they all are. And as I said to them the night of the cocktail “Always do what makes you happy”. I am very proud of you class of 2018.

After a very busy term with concerts, carnivals and festivals, PAD would like to invite students to join the Extra Curricular activities taking place! Have a look at the link above and join in!

Please support our LRC Librarian!
Our LRC librarian, Ms. Hilda Gómez is participating with the LRC Library Video in “#Innovative Librarian Experiences” (Experiencias bibliotecarias #Innovadoras). If she wins she will have the opportunity to participate in the Library Tour and Festival (Gira y festival de bibliotecas) representing the ABC in Colombia. We ask you for your cooperation! Help us with your vote by clicking on the link https://goo.gl/6EkAV4, and complete your personal information; then to validate your vote you will receive a notification in your email.

Talking about values
I would like to leave you with a short video on how we promote values (or anti values!) in conversations with our friends and family which in turn create an impact on our children. I encourage you to watch it and discuss with your children what their thoughts are as the examples given contextually related to their experiences as school children.

Good luck to the U16s Boys who will play against Lamatepec at their school on Monday. It would be wonderful for the community to support them!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón

STOP PRESS: ABC TEAMS WIN BOTH TEAM COMPETITIONS IN MEXICO AND ABC STUDENTS WIN FIVE OF THE TOP SIX POSITIONS. READ THE ABC NEWS BLOG FOR MORE DETAILS. For more information, visit our Newsblog.

We have our Mathcount team in Mexico this week with Ms. Bradburn and Mr. Cañas. We received news yesterday that they came second overall in the Math relay competition which is another excellent result. They have the Mathcounts competition today. We also have our HACIA Democracy team in Cartagena this week and look forward to hearing of their event.

Congratulations to all the students involved in the IB Music recital last week. It was a great show from our first IB Diploma musicians. Well done to all of them.

We had a visitor in school yesterday, talking to students about his time as a famous footballer. Jorge ‘Magico’ Gonzalez gave his time to talk to our children individually and sign autographs. We appreciated his generosity and thank him for coming to inspire the next generation!

Next week at the ABC is Brain Awareness week and we will be talking about some of the amazing things our brains can do. Our ABC children already have shown the power of their brains to learn at least two languages as well as all the other things we require of them at school and in their lives. However we need to keep their and our brains healthy and focused. Brains need sleep, water, healthy food to sustain them but they also need challenge and problems to solve. It is important that we do not allow them to be distracted by obsession or addicted to inappropriate activities. As parents we need to ensure we provide opportunities for healthy brain development and growth. Please help your children avoid over exposure to gadgets and help them discuss ideas with you and their friends.

I would like to say another thank you to all our staff and students who made the Bicultural Arts Festival such a success. I was proud of the show we helped facilitate here at school and thought the shows were amazing. Next year we will probably return to the Teatro Presidente but it was nice to see the way the ABC community was able to support this event.

This week we have been finalising our plans for infrastructure developments this summer. We are rebuilding our Secondary Science and Mathematics classrooms as well as the Administration and car park entrance. We are hugely aware of the importance of science and technology in our world and we want to ensure our school has the best possible learning spaces and resources. Science inspires children as we have seen with our amazing STEAMFEST each year and our focus on creativity. I will talk more about these plans at the forthcoming Coffee with the Chair of the Board and myself on Tuesday at 7 am. We hope to see many of you there!

We have been supporting Teleton in school again today, connecting with a project which we have a long history and we are proud to support. All of us need to help connect our children with causes which help develop their empathy and support for a better world!

On behalf of the School I would like to thank the Interact students for their donation to our Fairs to Educate project. They have been working hard selling healthy snacks during break, lunch times and at sporting events and have raised over $200 for our scholarship fund.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today has been STEAMFEST - look out for our reports next week!

I have been in touch with some other members of the school this week. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the IB music students recital on Tuesday evening. I was thrilled to see the talent, skill and professionalism that they demonstrated in their performances. I have also been visited by CAS students promoting the cause of Paraiso Down. They have been very keen to liaise effectively with Primary management and produced the materials needed to support the campaign. In Mr Keslakes piece above we have more students working together for a good cause. I feel so privileged to work in a school that produces such outstanding individuals and I am delighted to know what the future may hold for my students in Primary.

Demonstration Lower Primary Swimming lessons are underway now. Thank you to all those parents who are able to attend. I love to see the children developing their confidence in the water and making progress at their own independent rate. We value that the children are moving forward, not necessarily transformed over night but making those steady steps, or should I say strokes, to lasting and secure development. Well done to the students and their teachers.

Pre-K have been out and about.

Last Friday the school was a sea of colour as the children wore their Teleton t-shirts. Today was another opportunity to get the most out of the T-Shirts and next friday will be too.

Please note that there is a strong correlation between academic success and attendance. If your child misses school at any age right from Pre-k they are impairing their chances of success later in their school career and in life. We are sending out personal reminders to those families where absence is higher than expected.

As mentioned above our CAS students are working hard to support the local charity Paraiso Down. They have prepared a presentation for the students and organised leaflets and order forms. This year it is a very cool t-shirt in bright yellow to publicise the cause. If you feel able to support this cause the children can wear the t-shirt on the 21st MArch. If you would prefer just to make a donation please send any money in a named container. This is an optional event. There is no compulsion for students to participate but of course it is a very good cause if you can.

We have also had some of the primary Maths days in school this week here there has been a focus on maths for the Day. Students have taken part in some fun Maths activities. KS1 have been busy so will have their Maths day on the 20th March. Please ask your children what they did to celebrate.

STEAM Fest
From Mrs Jennifer Garcia- LRC coordinator

Today the ABC hosted its 3rd annual whole school STEAM Fest. This event showcases the active learning and innovative work our students engage in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. This work takes place in lessons and clubs as well as during student free time outside of school.

The event is open to students across Primary and Secondary and also includes winning projects from the 6th and 7th grade Science Fair. Special guests including schools and organisations around the country also attend as part of the STEAM Fest community outreach initiative. This year schools from as far away as Morazan and La Union are taking part along with school from Santa Tecla and San Salvador.

The festivities kicked off at 7:30 this morning and ran until 12:20 pm. An innovative go-kart project was introduced this year. At 10:30 the access ramp next to the large pool was closed off and the races began. We will share the results along with pictures from the race and the exhibition in a latter post. The entire STEAM Fest event was streamed live on the ABC Facebook page. If you were unable to catch the live streams you can also them from the Facebook page after the event.

Here are a few pictures from Thursday evening when the STEAM Team and Crew set up the Auditorium with the help of our wonderful maintenance people.

Let’s celebrate the Francophonie
From Mme. Escobar- Head of the French Department
Very soon we will celebrate “Francophonie Day”, from the 19th to the 23rd March. The French Department will organize assemblies for the students, one for KS3 on Wednesday, March 21st and another one on Thursday, March 22nd for KS4 and IB.

We will also have a French-Belgian tasting (which will be served by Shaka and Dres’ restaurant, ‘Gofres’). We are asking students to contribute with $5.00 to buy the Francophonie T-shirt which they will be able to wear with jeans on March 22nd, and to participate in the tasting on Thursday 22nd during lunch time in front of the LRC. Students can buy their T-shirts from Mr. Navarro or Mme. Escobar.
