30: Friday 27th April 2018

From the Director

We have a long holiday weekend coming up leading to a return to school next Wednesday. On Wednesday we will be welcoming the British Ambassador, Mr. Bernhard Garside who will be introducing a recycling plastic project to our children. We are looking forward to hearing about it and to supporting their ideas.

I hope you have had the chance to view our summer building plans which were sent out this week through our communications department. We are very excited at the prospect of the new learning areas in science and mathematics and know these are going to further develop our work in these vital areas. The ABC recognises the importance of science and mathematics in terms of developing subject specific as well as the creative and flexible thinking which underpins learning. The new reception area is also going to help safeguard our entry points as well as provide better and safer access for all. We will also have more protection in the rainy season!

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all our parents that enrolment for the 18-19 school year will begin on Wednesday, May 2nd. Later today, you will receive an email with financing information for our tuition from different local banks.

Over the last few weeks we have had a couple of incidents which have been the subject of gossip. These have either been fictitious or have been reinterpreted by people often telling a different story from reality. The topics have included accidents at school, plans to cancel the Circus and rumours about incidents. I know we live in an era of “fake news” but I do again want to ask that you do not pass on or accept rumours and gossip. Please trust us to deal with issues and advise you of situations either personally or within your grade or the whole school. The school really needs your support and trust in this matter.

Our number one priority at school is the safety and well being of your children. If we have any safeguarding concerns we will contact you and we do all we can to ensure our campus is safe at all times. If you have any safeguarding concerns please contact me or one of our Safeguarding Officers whose names are on our Safeguarding Policy on the parent page of the school website. The Safeguarding Officers are the three Heads of School including myself as well as Karen Bradburn, Carmen Chavez, Edda Padilla and Ana Mena. If you have any safeguarding concerns in line with our Safeguarding Policy then I suggest you contact Ms. Caceres or Mrs. Short directly and in confidence.

I am always impressed by the level of parental engagement in our school community when it comes to supporting events or activities. In recent weeks we have seen amazing support for our rainforest and a great book week parade. Your support in these areas is unbelievable. We are hoping to see this support develop into other areas of the school life and we are working with the Parents Association to ensure we are working closely together in all areas the school works in including safeguarding our children outside school and generally helping parents work together to support their children.

I hope you have a pleasant weekend. See you on Wednesday!

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a busy two weeks with a lot going on in Primary. Thank you to all the children who participated in our Funzel fundraising activities. On Thursday Grade 4 children had a great experience selling the products they baked at home as part of our Entry Point of the unit Bake it! and as a fundraising for FUNZEL, collecting more than $700 as a grade. In this unit they will understand how molecules behave in different materials (solids, liquids and gases) and how these materials can be changed.

I know the organization will be very grateful for every cent received and we will continue to have an impact on the wildlife left in EL Salvador. Especially, of course, the turtle population. If we can just educate our families, our businesses and the general population to discontinue using styrofoam and ‘one use’ plastic we will be making a significant difference to the world crisis.

Book week has been amazing. Thank you to Debbie Lawrence the English co-ordinator for her excellent organization and all the staff who have supported her. The focus on poetry has been very enjoyable with lots of funny and nonsense poems coming to the fore as well as more traditional and classic poetry. Thank you to all those parents who have participated as well. The children have read to each other, performed to each other and dressed up for each other in the parade today. 5th Caceres assembly was a great hit with Upper Primary and it revolved around a series of books that were visited in a very entertaining way. English and Spanish books have been on sale in school so that every child could buy a book to treasure. I still remember all these years later the first book I ever owned and I read it over and over again.

Tonight is Latin Music Night another great school event where we have a chance to see our students perform and enjoy ourselves dancing the evening away. We have the very special Ligia Morales and the group SaLsa Clave performing as well. There is no entry charge and refreshments will be available for purchase. Everyone is expected to stay until 8.00 when the band finishes.

We are now planning our World Cup whole school entry point which will be happening in the middle of May. Please help your children to understand what is happening when the media starts to cover it.

Monday and Tuesday we are not in school. You have the chance to enjoy a long weekend. The 10th of May is Mother’s Day and this is also a non school day.

Have a very enjoyable long weekend.

Very best wishes,

Sharon Short
Head of Primary

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

I would like to start by saying a big thank you to Mr Hall, Ms Chávez and Mr Hogan who stood in for me during my absence as I attended the Latin American Heads Conference. It was an incredible opportunity to collaborate and learn from leading international educators. It was also a great confirmation that we are working well in some areas and there are still challenges ahead which absolutely need the collaborative efforts of all- teachers, parents and students. It was also an amazing experience to be able to see two of our ROCs, who attended the conference as Student Delegates: Daniela Guevara and José Andrés Villalobos, both in Grade 11. They truly made us proud as they discussed social issues which Latin American countries face today and how as teenagers and young adults can have a huge impact and change the prospects of many. They were joined by representatives of schools from many countries such as Colombia, Brasil, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina among others. Well done Daniela and José Andrés!

Academic honesty
From Marta Vásquez- Jefe del departamento de Psychology y HCN
As part of the academic honesty policy, students in the Psychology class pledged to respect and disseminate the ABC rules; practice them in their evaluations and in their future education.

This idea was taken from the Ibero-American Summit on Academic Integrity. The Catholic University of Chile implemented its code of honour and the students signed an agreement to practice honesty. Also the University of Bogotá and Monterrey amongst others, participated in this pledge. The special guest was Tracey Bretag, PhD, director of the Academic Integrity Office at the University of South Australia.

Among the most popular are:
a. Quote the sources used in their assignments,
b. No cheating nor paraphrasing parts of other assignments,
c. Not to use tools which are not permitted in exams (cell phones, smart watches, etc.),
d. Never pay someone else to do their work,.
e. Teachers pledge to continue learning on academic integrity .

This is a very important area for the academic life of our students.

We invite you to talk to them at home about what they know, and what they consider to be academic honesty. As school, we will be publishing our revised policy on academic honesty which is included in our code of conduct and values.

Poets of Music 2018
Maria Haydée Díaz- KS3 coordinator
As part of the final activities of the contest, The Poets of Music, the Spanish department organized an interpretative reading with the 6th grade students for the 5th grade students. This type of gatherings have helped create closer ties with younger students. It was very enjoyable to share and take part in this activity.

Book week! ABC teacher authors!
From the LRC super team! Judith Mendez, Melissa Hernandez, Hilda Gomez and Jennifer Garcia

Daniel Read- History HoD
This week in Secondary we celebrated International Book Week. During the week the students attended the annual book fair and participated in a variety of exciting literature related activities and challenges, in and around the LRC.

One of the many highlight of the week was the discovery by students, that several of ABC Teachers past and present are in fact published authors. It is truly inspiring for students to have access to authors and their works, and encourages them to embark on their own writing adventures.

On Wednesday the Recilectura club visited the Plaza l Transparencia in Santa Tecla. The purpose of this visit was to record a short film documenting the links between the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and El Salvador. We look forward to sharing the film in the upcoming week.

The week ended with the final book fair and Book Character day in which staff and students dressed up as their favourite book characters. We invite you view images of all the Book Week highlights through at Flickr media gallery.

ABC IB Art Exhibition on the news!

The Apprentice- A WEEK AT WORK IN THE REAL WORLD!
June 11th through 15th, 2018
Activity Coordinators: Eric Quijano, María Eugenia Vides, Gloria Gutiérrez 2201-6270, 6287, 6236
As part of our University Guidance and Careers Programme, every year we organize an activity called The Apprentice, which provides an important opportunity for our students to further develop their academic vision and professional plans. The activity involves students in 9th grade, who will do an internship at a company/institution and carry out tasks related to a professional field they envision as a real alternative in their future. We want the students to reflect upon this experience through a questionnaire, student presentations, and a group discussion about lessons’ learned.

We would like to know if any parents are able to facilitate an internship opportunity for any of our students at their places of work, or through a fellow colleague; we prefer to place from 2 - 8 students at each location. We would appreciate your support greatly. Please contact us!

I would like to say a great big thank you to Andrés Figueroa (President) and Diego Berhens (Vice President) for their service this year. You were great examples to follow and you will be missed!

I would like to sign off wishing the Grade 10 and Grade 12, on behalf of the community, the very best for their International Examinations which begin today. I know you are more than ready to be successful in these and we look forward to hearing your great results in the future!

29: Friday 20th April 2018

From the Director

I have spent a few days this week at the Latin American Heads Conference in Bogotá which has been very interesting. It has been interesting to talk about education and best practice and understanding ways we can continue to develop our world class learning at the ABC. As part of the Conference two of our staff Ana Raquel Suarez and Ana Cabrera presented a brilliant session on Reggio Emilia learning ideas and our early years learning philosophy. There were many positive comments about the work we are doing with our early years children. As part of the LAHC we also had two of our students participating in the conference. They did an amazing job representing our school and it was a pleasure to work with them.

We have finalized our infrastructure developments for next year and we are producing a special version of this newsletter next week. We are really excited about the plans and the further improvement of our learning environment.

This Sunday is World Earth Day and we have been fundraising in school to support it. The focus this year is in raising awareness of plastic pollution and committing to Ending Plastic Pollution by Earth Day 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. This also fits with our support for the Sustainable Development Goals and especially numbers 6 and 14. This link is useful.

I am looking forward to being back in school on Monday and seeing many of you.

Primary News

Dear Parents and carers,

Following on from Mr Keslake’s comments please read a snippet from our Reggio Emilia expert Mrs Yolanda Siri. Ms Yoli has been fully trained in the Reggio Emilia inspired approach, including spending some time in Italy.

The Reggio Emilia philosophy of education began in north Italy in 1945 in a region called Reggio Emilia. Its founder is Loris Malaguzzi.

It is recognised worldwide as one of the best education methods for early childhood and furthermore, the Harvard School of Education studies it as a model for their learning groups. The approach is centred on the following; the child as protagonist, the teacher as the guide, the learning space as the third teacher, the involvement of families and the documentation of the child’s learning.

The next two weeks are very hectic and there is a lot going on for you and our students to get involved with. We sent you out the letter about the Funzel Fundraisers this week and we hope the students will participate in order to raise as much as possible for this worthy an very important cause.

On Friday April the 27th at 6.00pm it is Latin Music Night. A chance to enjoy music from the region, performances from students across the school and a local professional group Ligia Morales and Salsa Clave will be playing for us to ‘dance our socks off’.

Entry to the event is free and refreshments will be on sale. The PAC is decorated to create an exciting atmosphere and it always a really enjoyable evening. Do please come along and support the students.

Book Week is the last week of April in school. You have received letters explaining what will be happening and inviting you in to buy books for your children. Reading is a key skill for life and we want our children to love books and reading. It is very important that they have books at home to treasure.

The focus this year is poetry and we are looking forward to the students performing some poems for us.

On Monday the daily poetry reading will start and students will prepare their ‘poem in their pocket’ to read to anyone at a moments notice. Tuesday they will be sharing these poems. Wednesday is the Lower Primary Pyjama Day where the students can wear their night clothes to school for a bedtime story. Please make sure the night wear is not skimpy in any way. Thursday there will be classes sharing with each other and Friday is when the students dress up as a character. Each class has been set a theme so please check with the teacher if you are not sure what your child should be wearing. Over the week there will be some story dramatizations for LP students as well.

Please note that the school is closed on Monday 30th April for a mid term break.

Have a great week.

Secondary News

Miss Caceres is attending the Latin American Heads conference in Bogota this week so has asked me to write the weekly.

Nothing separates successful people from unsuccessful people more than how they use their time
John C Maxwell

Never is this quote more pertinent than at this very moment, particularly for our Grade 10 and 12 students. We are very proud of the successes of ABC students across the school and beyond. We celebrate their achievements in a wide variety of areas, not least in the incredible performances in the recent school production or our students successes in maths and debating competitions. We also welcome back our Exabrits and enjoy following their successes beyond the ABC.

However, whilst it is right to celebrate achievement, we cannot lose sight of what comes before - hard work! It is too easy for us to see others enjoying success and to attribute it to ‘talent’ or ‘luck’. However, nearly all success comes as a result of determination, resilience and, above all, effort. Often this hard work and the struggles involved are not apparent to others, but they are always there. As our Grade 10 and 12 students embark on their final week of school before their exams, they need to keep this in mind, and maintain the motivation to ensure they achieve the very best results possible in their exams. In most cases they have and it has been pleasing to see the effort, commitment and hard work being shown. I am sure this will be reflected in their exam results. I am also grateful for the generosity and energy shown by our teachers at this time of year as they support those students with their final exam preparation. Our students are lucky to be taught by such a talented and committed group of professionals who work tirelessly to ensure they achieve success.

This work will continue next week and it is imperative that students maintain a sensible routine and continue to come to school every day prepared to work hard right up to the final day of school. They need to use their time effectively, following a revision timetable and ensuring they have plenty of rest and exercise.

There is more information about the exams below, as well as information about some of the amazing events that have been taking place around the school to celebrate Earth Week. There is also some information about Book Week which is rapidly approaching. Please encourage your son or daughter to get involved and celebrate the joy of reading!

I wish you and your families a restful weekend.

Adrian Hall
Deputy Headteacher

Grade 10 and 12 - External Exams
Mr Hogan and Mr Hall have led Life Skills lessons this week outlining the expectations and procedures for the upcoming IB and IGCSE exams. It is crucial that students and parents fully understand these, as failure to adhere to the exam regulations may have serious consequences. We would be very grateful if you could discuss these with your son or daughter before the exams begin next week.

Book Week is Almost Here!

We are very excited to announce the start of Secondary Book Week 2018! This annual event will begin on Monday 23rd, and run all week long.

Book Week offers opportunities to students and staff to engage with a breadth of literature genres and formats through a variety of activities. The activities, including displays and special guest, help to highlight the significance of literary interactions in our lives and allow us to engage in important discussions which focus on on literature related themes.

The LRC, in conjunction with the Spanish department have prepared a set of dynamic activities for students during timetabled lessons next week. Other activities such as competitions, a book fair and special display work will take place in and around the LRC.

On Friday there will be a dress up as your favourite character day. In order to participate, students must complete a Google form indicating their intent to participate and their character ( prior to 3pm on Wednesday April 15th).

Click here for the schedule of activities for the week.

Happy Book Week, ABC!

We Will Rock You - Encore!
Today students and staff were able to enjoy the first of our Friday lunchtime concerts on the lawn in front of the LRC. There could be no better inauguration then an encore of the fantastic ‘We Will Rock You’ and the stars of the show ran through several of the big numbers. Again they did a magnificent job and sent everyone away happy to their final lesson of the week! Thanks to the amazing cast, and to the staff who helped organise the concert. We can’t wait for next week!
