38: Friday 22nd June 2018

From the Director

As this school year closes we have been celebrating the achievements of our students. Our school seeks to ensure we recognise and promote talents within the context of a high quality all round international education. I have seen so much evidence of this during the past two weeks.

Inevitably at the end of a school year there are staffing changes and new plans for the next year. I would like to thank all staff who are moving on and we said farewell to them in school today. However I do want to highlight particular long standing staff who are leaving this year after contributing so much to our school and our community for so long. I know in each case that they are sad to be saying farewell and we are sad to see them go. Marta Vasquez has completed 31 years as a teacher of psychology here and has inspired generations of young people into her area including many of our current LSU. Thank you Marta and we wish you a pleasant retirement. Karen Bradburn came to the school in 2002 and has made a difference in all the roles she has taken in. She and her family are moving to Spain and we will miss them as much as she will miss us. Thank you Karen. Andrew Murgatroyd is leaving after 14 years teaching Business and Economics to work in China. Andrew has contributed so much to sports and especially cricket in his time as well as inspiring future entrepreneurs. We thank him very much. I would also like to thank Lucila Gonzalez who has led the Secondary Art department for many years. She came to the school in 2003, has inspired many young artists and is leaving to pursue her own art career. I would like to thank her for all her work. I would also like to add my thanks to Mrs. Beneke who has been in charge of our Cafeteria for the last 17 years. We thank her for her flexibility and work.

We have decided to appoint a new position at school to oversee all our sports provision. This role will be an overall Athletics Director and I am pleased to announce that Ceci Hernandez has been appointed with exciting ideas for developing our sports and coaching programmes as well as overseeing developments in PE. Sara Suster will no longer be running the Team Sports programme but will be supporting the bilingual league and training of coaches. Ceci Hernandez will be overseeing our whole sports programme including team sports. I would like to thank Sara for her work with Team Sports as she moves towards retirement.

Please note that due to our renovations:
  • Our admin entrance is closed until further notice. All visitors to school should come in through our main gate (next to SISA). Our school office will be open as regular.
  • Our school shop will be closed from Monday 25th June to Friday 20th July - both dates inclusive. Uniforms will be sold from Monday 23rd onwards from 7:00 to 2:00pm (without closing at noon).
It remains for me to wish you all an enjoyable holiday with your children. I hope they will continue to read and reflect on the past school year while going done preparatory work for next year. I will see you on Monday 20 August. We start with a busy week so please go check and keep up to date with our calendar.

Primary News

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Parents and Students,

This is my last opportunity to write to you in the ABC weekly. I cannot believe that my last day in school is here. The year has flown by. I just wanted to let you know that it has been a privilege to work with you all. My husband and I have loved our life in El Salvador, especially the warmth of the people. We have made many new friends from all walks of life. The school is a fantastic education centre and it has been a joy to work with the children who are so open and responsive and the staff who are so dedicated and work so hard. I have treasured every moment here and cannot express how much we will miss you all. We wish the school and everyone who is part of it all the best for the coming year and hope to hear from you from time to time. We will remember our wonderful experience here and all the people who have been part of it for the rest of our lives. A great big thank you to you all.

Fondest regards,

Sharon Short

Congratulations to all of the wonderful talented children who performed in the primary talent shows. We are always amazed by the children, their dedication and maturity.

Thank you to the actors from Secondary who created and performed a wonderful play for our primary students based on Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The children were very engaged and found it very funny.

Today we say goodbye to Alan Macdonald, who has been teaching in Prepa for 2 years, he has been a great addition to our team both as a class teacher and as part of our IPC accreditation team. He worked hard to challenge the children to achieve their full potential and shared his early-literacy expertise with the rest of the Prepa team. We wish him success in his next school.

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

Our academic year draws to a close and we have much to celebrate and many happy memories and for that we must all be very thankful. Firstly, I would like to give my most sincere words of thanks and admiration to all our wonderful teachers and staff for all their effort and dedication. I thank each and everyone of them, not only for teaching our students but for going above and beyond in their dedication towards their education. You've all created not only students, but individuals with bright futures and potential to change the world. You are a great source of motivation and support for us all and you have helped in shaping and enriching their journey to make sure it is not only challenging but also fun-filled. I am certain I speak on behalf of our students when I say GRACIAS!

Secondly, I would like to thank the many parents who have supported the school this year. Parent partnership and mutual respect is vital to have a good understanding of our strengths and areas to work on and a vital aspect to enable the school to meet the needs and aspirations of our families and students. I hope we see even more parental support and involvement next year and I thank you in advance for supporting school policies.

I know you are all aware of the new extra curricular that the French department launched this year. They ran a professional course on Music Production with Shaka y Dres and I am so proud to be able to share it with the community: Video Very well done and we look forward to more!

The summer break is long and I appeal to you that you encourage your children to not just sit and let the time tick away. Help them to plan their time well. For those who will sit the IGCSE and IB exams next year, they need to study hard! For others, I hope they try some new things to challenge themselves. Motivate them to go outdoors and explore places they have never been to. They need to have fun with friends and family, and do something worthwhile. Above all, encourage communication, but in person and not just through screens and social media. Seize the day!

Please look at these photos from our Super Match: https://pe-sw-abc.blogspot.com/2018/06/our-traditional-super-match-2018.html

This time of year can be tough with all the goodbyes. This year, we are also saying goodbye to wonderful teachers who are sadly leaving us as you can see from Mr Keslake’s message above. Some have been here for just a short while, while others have been part of our community for a long time and are practically family. They have given greatly of themselves to the betterment of our school, and they deserve a HUGE thank you and we wish them the very best in their future homes and we do hope they keep in touch!

Have a wonderful and safe holiday,

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón

Secondary News

Dear Parents and carers,

I begin this weekly by saying what a wonderful celebration of success and achievement we had at the school Thursday evening at our class of 2018 Graduation. They will be missed at school and we wish them the very best in their next academic step. We look forward to welcoming them back at future Headmaster’s reception and share their successes.

Today we kick off the Awards Ceremonies with Grade 10 and we are grateful to all the parents who made time to come and support the year group. We remind you that G6,7,8,9 and 11 have their Awards ceremonies next week and they are all published on the calendar.

HABITAT for HUMANITY
From Mr Colin Hogan and Ms Kay Brown
The Grade 11 Habitat for Humanity team spent a productive Saturday morning last week digging a well and painting a new build. Here the are, hard at work. This has been a year-long Grade 11 CAS project, with help from the Grade 10s and the team has organised four successful construction activities over the course of the year.

KOMBIDAR
From Carmen Chávez- Pastoral Coordinator
On Tuesday we organised a breakfast activity with all KS3 students. The purpose of this was to help all those people in need. Kombi-dar is a non profit organisation that help all those people who don't have shelter and provide a breakfast meal for free for everyone they sell. The breakfast was a success and we manage to collect over $600 dollars and more than 260 servings.

One of the nicest parts of the breakfast was that all of our blue men and women in our community joined us, and one of our Grade 8 ambassadors thank them in name of all the students.

This again is a great opportunity for our students to give back and share with the community.

Grade 9 Work Experience
From Mr Quijano
“As part of our Vocational and University Orientation Program, every year we carry out an educational activity based on a work experience with our Year 9 students. Students are placed in a real life work situation, and they take on the responsibility of an internship / work experience for an entire week. They perform tasks directly related to the career(s) involved in that line of professional work, and the idea is that the student can see how the career option they are considering in their professional future, has real applicability in a particular field.

We have students working all around the city of San Salvador and Santa Tecla, in institutions and companies like TCS, Channel 10, Hotel Barceló, Hospital San Rafael, Santa Tecla Community Clinics, La Prensa Grafica, Latitude Sports, Monica Arguedas Fashion Store, Espino Law, Arias Law, TELUS, Channel 33, and as many others as the diversity in our student’s vocational interests. Our students have shown interest in the Law, Public Relations, International Relations, Communications, Economics, Business Administration, Marketing, Psychology, Education, Health, Engineering, Hospitality, as well as, TV Production, Fashion, Aviation and Scientific Research. At the end of the workweek, we will guide students on a reflection about careers and the work experience, so that they may continue to explore professions.

The university counselors at the school have been visiting students at work during the week. We have observed our students show great interest in their work, confidence on the tasks they have been guided to perform, showing ability, proactivity, and teamwork; and we have received very good comments from their mentors about their performance, including: they have been very punctual, show respect for adults, show much enthusiasm, and are eager to learn. From the students’ perspective, they feel grateful to have the opportunity to learn about a career they would want to pursue in the future. This feeling was corroborated in an email sent to us by one of our parents, which I would like to share:

“I would like to express my satisfaction for this activity; I believe that it is really contributing to the induction of students in work environments, particularly in the Espino Nieto Office, where they have put great effort to prepare tasks which are appropriate to the interests of young people and the objective of the experience…”

Finally, this activity would not be a success without the support of our professional community, which includes many parents of our ABC community. Thank you.”

LAST DAY OF LESSONS- Very important information!
Last day of lessons is around the corner on June 22nd and our traditional Supermatch will be held on that day. There will be lots of fun sports activities which we truly hope your child does not miss out! We are asking that ALL STUDENTS come wearing PE kit and bring a change of clothes (PE uniform) since there will water games!

One more week to go and still many events to go! I thank the parents in advance for your support in ensuring your children come to school to enjoy the last week of their school year. Don’t forget that next Friday 22nd of June, Secondary school students are allowed to leave at 12.00pm.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón

From the Director

It was distressing to hear about the devastation in Antigua and the surrounding area following the recent eruption. We are sending supplies to help with relief work for people who have lost everything in the wake of the eruption. Thank you to everyone who has already helped on this appeal. We will still accept supplies on Monday if you want to collect items over the weekend. In particular rice, beans, dry food, oil, tinned foods, blankets, clothing and sanitary items including paper. You can read more about this on our newsblog.

We celebrated our annual Lap of Honour this morning with children processing round school.

As we approach the last two weeks of this term I would like to take an early opportunity to thank my colleagues who are leaving after completing their time at the Academia Britanica Cuscatleca. In particular I would like to thank Mrs. Sharon Short for her contribution to the school over the last few years. She has been a highly valued colleague and on behalf of all the school community I would like to wish her and Andrew the very best in their future. I know they will not forget us!

At a very busy time of the year I would like to add my appreciation to the Digital Video Awards team who organised last nights event. This event is an amazing focal point for so much creativity and independent learning. For me the highlight is seeing the engagement of the participants in their work and their pride in their achievements. Congratulations to everyone involved.

We are looking forward to welcoming members of the Class of 2022 from their Washington field trip tomorrow. They have had the chance to visit inside the White House and the Pentagon as part of their visit. Our thanks to parents and friends for helping to organize parts of this trip.

On Thursday 14 June we will celebrate the graduation event of the Class of 2018. As a result there will be no extra curricular activities after 2 pm on Thursday. The Class of 2019 and 2020 will represent our students at the event which starts at 5 pm promptly and should finish by 8 pm.

I wish you all a pleasant weekend with your children and families.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Staff have been very busy carrying out final assessments this week and writing reports that will be shared with you on Friday 15th June. We know that all of our students try their hardest and some find school work easier than others. We want to support all our students to achieve their best.

This week our grade 5 students have been visiting the Secondary school for a taste of Secondary school life. They are being taught all of the essential things they will need to know before they get there and experiencing some of the different routines and locations. Feedback so far has been that they have had a great time.

Grade 5 parents were sent their invitation to the Parent Partnership meeting with both Secondary and Primary teams this week. The meeting will take place on Tuesday 12th June at 6.00pm in the PAC. Please ensure you are there. If you have friends with children in grade 5 please make sure they know about it too.

Today all of the rest of our Primary students have visited their new classrooms and either introduced to their new teacher or told who their new teacher will be if they are not in the country yet. They will have started an activity that will be finished or contribute to next years start of term. I am sure they will have lots to tell you about their new class.

On Monday we had our first UP Assembly for a few weeks and there was a lot of catching up to do. So many children had won team or individual events that it took about 35 minutes to recognise them all. We did have a visit from the secondary Spanish department to make the awards for the Poems primary children had written for their competition and they were able to present the winners with their certificates. Here you can see some of our talented Primary children below. There were three winners from each class.

During the week the grade intertribal ‘dance offs’ also continued and the results are available on the PE blogspot https://pe-sw-abc.blogspot.com/ The students are amazing it is well worth a look.

We have now completed the auditions for the talent show. Please console your children if they did not make it and help them to be better prepared for next year. We had over 40 applicants for some shows so the competition was tight. We do see the standards go up a little each year.

On Thursday evening we had our annual DVA awards. In the primary school the children work on their presentations as part of their lessons with the goal of building skills and understanding. We had several nominees in each category. The winners were thrilled and delighted with their awards. If you voted for the winners you can see the skills progress across the school and the creativity develop. Well done to all the participants and congratulations to those who won an award.

This morning, every student from Upper Primary who had represented the school in some way or other, or who had achieved well in sporting or similar activities on an individual basis walked round the school for the Lap of Honour. To be honest we hardly had anyone to watch because so many of our students participate in school matches and events that nearly everyone was walking round. It is just one more reason to feel pleased and proud of our school and students. Congratulations to everyone who took part and keep up the good work! To see the video of this event, please click here.

IPC unit world cup watch some games

On Thursday children going home early no extracurricular after 2.00pm

Parent homework for the weekend! Please have another look at our school safeguarding policy on the parent portal of the ABC website. It in both English and Spanish. You do need to keep yourself up to date and informed on these issues.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

The end of year is fast approaching and there are still so many things left to do and so many activities planned. As always, I am in awe of the effort and commitment of our fantastic ABC Staff- from teachers, support staff to maintenance and security. All of the events which are so carefully planned out and carried out for our community to enjoy, are the result of hours of dedication and care on their part and I would like to say thank you to each and every one of them.

On Wednesday we had our Grade 12’s Acción de Gracias ceremony which kicked off the Graduating class’ celebrations. Thursday, our LRC and IT team put on our annual Digital Video Awards (which you can read about in Mr Keslake’s section of the weekly) and today we rounded off the week with our celebratory Lap of Honour. It has been a great week!

You can see some pictures on the DVA’s here.

Please keep a close eye on the school calendar to be aware of the events pertaining to your child, in particular their year group Awards Assembly. We look forward to seeing you there supporting the whole Year’s achievements. Please note that we do not let students know who has won awards as we like to surprise them at the ceremony. However, if your child wins an award we will do our best in letting you know in order for you to ensure you can be present to support them. We ask that you do not let them know in advance. I repeat that we do try to make these events a celebration of the whole year group’s achievements.

Grade 7 Tin Marin Visit
From Mr Gale- Head of Year 7
Following a meeting with tutor representatives, there is going to be a trip on Thursday June 21st, where grade 7 will be going to Tin Marin from periods 2 to 5. They will have a tour of the museum followed by the planetarium and a reptile exhibition. The will then return to the ABC for lunch and P6. This is a great chance to finish the year with a fun, educational trip that the majority of the year group asked for.

The cost of the trip is $10 and this includes the air conditioned bus ride and entrance to the museum. A letter has been sent to you via email. Can I please ask you return the slip to your child’s tutor by Friday 15th June.

If you have any questions, please email me at nicholasgale@abc-net.edu.sv

Grade 9 Work Experience
From Eric Quijano
All Grade 9 will be out on Work Experience next week. Parents and students have received information regarding the week and posts but we would like you support in talking with your children about the following points:

1. Read and follow the instructions for your job carefully. Make a copy/picture of your instructions to take with you at work

2. You must dress exactly as instructed. Bring any necessary equipment that they asked you for (some jobs only)

3. You must arrive at work 15 minutes before the scheduled time

4. Do not use cellphones unless you are in your break time

5. Be active at work: positive mind, offer help, volunteer, ask questions about the work and what you want to learn.

6. If there are any issues, email me or call at 2201-6270, 2201-6236. We will visit you at work during the week.

7. Any problems arriving on time, absences (only in extreme situations and with previous permission from me) must be reported to your mentor at work.

8. You will do a presentation about your work placement with your peers, the week after work. Below are your questions that you must consider, and take pictures where possible.

We will visit you at work next week. Let's do our best!

Student Council - supporting an International event!
Part of being an international school with a global vision of developing citizens of the world is being aware and supporting events of global significance. As you know, the World Cup is starting soon and our children are certainly excited about it and looking forward to such an incredible event.

This year, the Student Council Executive team asked for support from us to watch a couple of matches and learn from the unity and good sportsmanship on display. We have listened to them and will take this opportunity to make it a learning and community building experience which will start with a Secondary school assembly and will end with the viewing of Spain vs Portugal match on Monday and England vs Tunisia on Monday! There will be food and snacks on sale and the StuCo will also be raising funds for their projects. Thanks to the Student Council, our students and staff will enjoy this match on a super large screen in the auditorium. We are very much looking forward to it!

Grade 11- IB Art Exhibition

From Lucila González- Art HoD
11th grade IB Art students organized a small art exhibition to show the work produced during this school year. The works exhibited are the result of a theoretical and practical work related to the human being which the children interpreted like: toxic loves, mental issues, love and happiness, and social reality, amongst others.

It is important to emphasize the variety of techniques and visual resources used by the students in order for the observer to understand and achieve a degree of rapport with the ideas. We invite everyone in the community to visit the exhibition.

Grade 9 were out all day on their Empowerment activity with the pastoral and LSU team. Much fun was had and a big thank you to the staff team who led and organised the day!

Have a wonderful weekend!

From the Director

Congratulations to our swimming team who won the national swimming competition on Thursday. It was a fantastic team effort and we are very proud of them. It is a huge achievement.

As you know we have had to change our ABC Summer Camp because of our on site building programme. I am pleased to inform you that we have managed to arrange an alternative location using the Maya Club and Punto Infantil (Literario) from Monday 25 June to Friday 13 July from 8 am to 12 noon. This three week summer camp needs to be prepaid and signed up in advance to secure a place. The cost for the three weeks is $325. If you would like to reserve a place please contact Sara Suster at school. More details will be provided next week.

Last night we celebrated our annual Headmaster's Reception which is a traditional Exabrit welcome to the graduating class.

Thank you to all the Exabrits who were able to attend and hopefully renewed some friendships as well as making new ones. The Class 2018 Graduation schedule moves to the Accion de Gracias next Wednesday. Please note that on that day we will not have any extra curricular events after 2 pm as we need to clear the campus. We will also be cancelling extra curricular classes next Thursday when we have the graduation.

As you may be aware we are making changes to the cafeteria system. Mrs Beneke our current provider is leaving after many years and we are very grateful to her for the service she has provided. As she closed down and will be leaving it is vital that all cafeteria credit must be paid in full. Please note that as she winds down the business there may be reduced options available. Please bear with her and the school as this transition takes place. Just to reiterate all credit must be paid up to date as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

On Wednesday we had the final of the inter tribe dance competition. The students have been really engaged with this event and have participated enthusiastically. The have not only demonstrated their dance skills but also their negotiation and collaboration skills as well as creativity, enthusiasm and independence. Please have a look at the PE blogspot for some of the highlights. I was able to watch the grade 5 ‘Dance-off’ and I was really proud of the effort that all students made to participate. As one of the judges I marked for creativity, synchronization, technical difficulty and the finale. The students did a great job organising their own routines and practicing. Well done to all the students and thank you to the PE team for organising the event.

Please be aware that on Monday it is the last day of school for the grade 12 students. It is an exciting time for them and we wish them all well. It is traditional for them to make a grand entry and visit all areas of the school including primary first thing in the morning. This usually means that the school gates have to be closed for a short time. Please try and get your children to school early and avoid the 6.55 to 7.15 time slot.

Our own grade 5 students are building up to the finish of their time in Primary. They will be visiting Secondary and undertaking a variety of activities. Some parents have asked to film some of these last activities on behalf of the whole grade to make a souvenir for the students. We have sent a letter to Grade 5 parents giving them the option of withdrawing their child from the film. If you do not want your child to take part you must let us know by Monday 4th June.

We have been practicing some of the songs for the Effort leads to success assemblies. The first one is grade 2 on the 11th of June. We look forward to seeing parents or other family members there.

Kindest regards,

Sharon Short
Lead Safeguarding Officer.

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

It seems we are running against the clock now although we still have three full weeks. There are many events and activities for students, staff and parents. Please keep a close eye on our School calendar so you do not miss activities related to your child’s Grade.

Cal 3 is coming to a close for all grades and I know what expectation this creates. The final reports are published on the iSAMS portal the last week of term.

We had a very useful INSET day for teachers on Thursday where we spent time in collaborative groups reviewing what went well this year and what we want to continue developing and preparing for next academic year. We started the day with a strong emphasis on “Active learning.” It was a great reminder of the importance of being active in our lives and working in teams. We looked at how the brain needs to be challenged and free to be creative in finding solutions and ways of problem solving and how as teachers, we need to provide the appropriate context for our children to own and guide their learning. It was also interesting to emphasise how our children learn and develop in a bilingual context.

Libraries in the Cloud and Practical Applications for Makerspaces.
From Hilda Gómez and Jennifer Garcia
Libraries around the world are turning into dynamic innovative places, that motivate communities to create, innovate and learn.

On Saturday May 26th, 2018 the LRC team hosted a series of short workshops entitled Libraries in the Cloud and Practical Applications for Makerspaces. Participants included teachers, librarians and interested individuals from around the country

This initiative was one of many activities that took place during the celebration of Salvadoran Librarians Week, during the 60th Anniversary of Contributing to the Development of Information Professionals: Globally United as Agents of Change.

Various sessions were offered as morning workshop: Google Drive and Sites, Virtual Reality and 360 degree Tours 360 degrees with Google Cardboard, Expeditions, Panoform and 360 degree Cameras, Makerspaces, Drones, and 3D Design and Printing amongst others.

The excitement and active learning were palpable as participants moved from one activity to the next. Each one of them left the workshops with several exciting new ideas for their own institution as well as implementation strategies.

The excitement isn’t over yet. Participants have kept the discussion going through our ABES Google Classroom, where 3D models and other ideas are still being uploaded. It is truly a pleasure to work with such motivated individuals as we work together as educators to share ideas, best practice and inspiration.

You can view media from the workshops here

As part of the University Guidance process, we will be holding an information session entitled "University Search and Application Process". Parents and students of Grade 11 are strongly encouraged to attend as we are certain it will provide information regarding the application process which will prove very helpful throughout the year. It will cover how to search for universities, and the requirements and deadlines for different countries.

Monday June 4th at 6.00 p.m. in the PAC

If you would like to send questions in advance, we will gladly consider these questions during the Question and Answer part of the presentation.

We hope to see you all there!

Next week we kick off with the Grade 12 Graduation celebrations
First, with the traditional SENIOR EXIT, followed by their Senior breakfast and final assembly, to then round the day off with their final jump in the pool! On Wednesday it is their Thanksgiving ceremony and then on thursday 14th of June, their Graduation Ceremony. All these events are very important for us and they do entail support from the whole community.

Please be advised that:
  • The bottom car park will stop traffic at 6.45am on Monday 4th. Please make arrangements to arrive a little earlier than usual as Grade 12 parents will be using the car park to attend the Senior Exit and traffic can get heavy
  • There will be no Extra Curricular activities on Wednesday 6th of June or on Thursday 14th of June
  • Secondary school will finish school at 11.25 am on Thursday 14th (with the exception of Grade 11 who will attend a short rehearsal for Graduation and will finish the day at 12.00 pm)
  • ALL Grade 10 and Grade 11 students must attend the Graduation ceremony
If you have any questions regarding these events, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón
