35: Friday 1st June 2016

From the Director

Congratulations to our swimming team who won the national swimming competition on Thursday. It was a fantastic team effort and we are very proud of them. It is a huge achievement.

As you know we have had to change our ABC Summer Camp because of our on site building programme. I am pleased to inform you that we have managed to arrange an alternative location using the Maya Club and Punto Infantil (Literario) from Monday 25 June to Friday 13 July from 8 am to 12 noon. This three week summer camp needs to be prepaid and signed up in advance to secure a place. The cost for the three weeks is $325. If you would like to reserve a place please contact Sara Suster at school. More details will be provided next week.

Last night we celebrated our annual Headmaster's Reception which is a traditional Exabrit welcome to the graduating class.

Thank you to all the Exabrits who were able to attend and hopefully renewed some friendships as well as making new ones. The Class 2018 Graduation schedule moves to the Accion de Gracias next Wednesday. Please note that on that day we will not have any extra curricular events after 2 pm as we need to clear the campus. We will also be cancelling extra curricular classes next Thursday when we have the graduation.

As you may be aware we are making changes to the cafeteria system. Mrs Beneke our current provider is leaving after many years and we are very grateful to her for the service she has provided. As she closed down and will be leaving it is vital that all cafeteria credit must be paid in full. Please note that as she winds down the business there may be reduced options available. Please bear with her and the school as this transition takes place. Just to reiterate all credit must be paid up to date as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

On Wednesday we had the final of the inter tribe dance competition. The students have been really engaged with this event and have participated enthusiastically. The have not only demonstrated their dance skills but also their negotiation and collaboration skills as well as creativity, enthusiasm and independence. Please have a look at the PE blogspot for some of the highlights. I was able to watch the grade 5 ‘Dance-off’ and I was really proud of the effort that all students made to participate. As one of the judges I marked for creativity, synchronization, technical difficulty and the finale. The students did a great job organising their own routines and practicing. Well done to all the students and thank you to the PE team for organising the event.

Please be aware that on Monday it is the last day of school for the grade 12 students. It is an exciting time for them and we wish them all well. It is traditional for them to make a grand entry and visit all areas of the school including primary first thing in the morning. This usually means that the school gates have to be closed for a short time. Please try and get your children to school early and avoid the 6.55 to 7.15 time slot.

Our own grade 5 students are building up to the finish of their time in Primary. They will be visiting Secondary and undertaking a variety of activities. Some parents have asked to film some of these last activities on behalf of the whole grade to make a souvenir for the students. We have sent a letter to Grade 5 parents giving them the option of withdrawing their child from the film. If you do not want your child to take part you must let us know by Monday 4th June.

We have been practicing some of the songs for the Effort leads to success assemblies. The first one is grade 2 on the 11th of June. We look forward to seeing parents or other family members there.

Kindest regards,

Sharon Short
Lead Safeguarding Officer.

Secondary News

Dear parents and carers,

It seems we are running against the clock now although we still have three full weeks. There are many events and activities for students, staff and parents. Please keep a close eye on our School calendar so you do not miss activities related to your child’s Grade.

Cal 3 is coming to a close for all grades and I know what expectation this creates. The final reports are published on the iSAMS portal the last week of term.

We had a very useful INSET day for teachers on Thursday where we spent time in collaborative groups reviewing what went well this year and what we want to continue developing and preparing for next academic year. We started the day with a strong emphasis on “Active learning.” It was a great reminder of the importance of being active in our lives and working in teams. We looked at how the brain needs to be challenged and free to be creative in finding solutions and ways of problem solving and how as teachers, we need to provide the appropriate context for our children to own and guide their learning. It was also interesting to emphasise how our children learn and develop in a bilingual context.

Libraries in the Cloud and Practical Applications for Makerspaces.
From Hilda Gómez and Jennifer Garcia
Libraries around the world are turning into dynamic innovative places, that motivate communities to create, innovate and learn.

On Saturday May 26th, 2018 the LRC team hosted a series of short workshops entitled Libraries in the Cloud and Practical Applications for Makerspaces. Participants included teachers, librarians and interested individuals from around the country

This initiative was one of many activities that took place during the celebration of Salvadoran Librarians Week, during the 60th Anniversary of Contributing to the Development of Information Professionals: Globally United as Agents of Change.

Various sessions were offered as morning workshop: Google Drive and Sites, Virtual Reality and 360 degree Tours 360 degrees with Google Cardboard, Expeditions, Panoform and 360 degree Cameras, Makerspaces, Drones, and 3D Design and Printing amongst others.

The excitement and active learning were palpable as participants moved from one activity to the next. Each one of them left the workshops with several exciting new ideas for their own institution as well as implementation strategies.

The excitement isn’t over yet. Participants have kept the discussion going through our ABES Google Classroom, where 3D models and other ideas are still being uploaded. It is truly a pleasure to work with such motivated individuals as we work together as educators to share ideas, best practice and inspiration.

You can view media from the workshops here

As part of the University Guidance process, we will be holding an information session entitled "University Search and Application Process". Parents and students of Grade 11 are strongly encouraged to attend as we are certain it will provide information regarding the application process which will prove very helpful throughout the year. It will cover how to search for universities, and the requirements and deadlines for different countries.

Monday June 4th at 6.00 p.m. in the PAC

If you would like to send questions in advance, we will gladly consider these questions during the Question and Answer part of the presentation.

We hope to see you all there!

Next week we kick off with the Grade 12 Graduation celebrations
First, with the traditional SENIOR EXIT, followed by their Senior breakfast and final assembly, to then round the day off with their final jump in the pool! On Wednesday it is their Thanksgiving ceremony and then on thursday 14th of June, their Graduation Ceremony. All these events are very important for us and they do entail support from the whole community.

Please be advised that:
  • The bottom car park will stop traffic at 6.45am on Monday 4th. Please make arrangements to arrive a little earlier than usual as Grade 12 parents will be using the car park to attend the Senior Exit and traffic can get heavy
  • There will be no Extra Curricular activities on Wednesday 6th of June or on Thursday 14th of June
  • Secondary school will finish school at 11.25 am on Thursday 14th (with the exception of Grade 11 who will attend a short rehearsal for Graduation and will finish the day at 12.00 pm)
  • ALL Grade 10 and Grade 11 students must attend the Graduation ceremony
If you have any questions regarding these events, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón
