36: Friday 7th June 2013

From the Headmaster

Students need to have their own laptops (8th to 12th grade)

Please note that students in 8th through 12th grade need to have their own laptop for the school year starting in August. As a guide, our Systems Manager provides this information (further advice can be obtained from the Systems Team):

Processor: Core i5 (latest generation)

RAM (memory): min 4GB, but 8GB preferable

Hard Drive: min 160GB+, but 250GB preferable

Our students are independent
Our students learn to be INDEPENDENT. It is a trait that is taught to the very youngest children and developed throughout the school. They learn to look after their own belongings and there is no need for any help, and certainly not from maids or servants. Parents are asked to inform any staff they have that they are NOT to help; the picking up a student’s bag can easily be misconstrued as stealing and it has been the case that the wrong bag has been picked up on more than one occasion. Let our students look after their own things.

National Holiday for Fathers’ Day
As you know, Monday 17th of June is likely to be a National Holiday. We have adjusted our events appropriately and will be confirming this in the next ABC Weekly edition.

British Week
The British Embassy is organising BRITISH WEEK from the 8th to 15th of June. As part of this they are organising an ECO-CAMINATA on Sunday 9th of June. Registration at the event with free t-shirt for just $5 (children under 5 free). This is a guided walk with fun activities! Please see the poster for details.

Primary News

If you love me keep me safe
The children of Kinder Tenorio, supported by the Lower Primary staff, are leading a campaign this week to encourage parents and drivers to ensure that children are wearing their seatbelts at all times whilst in the car. Kinder Tenorio, some of our youngest pupils, have made powerful posters which are displayed all around school and teaching staff have been on duty in our car parks reminding adults and children about the importance of wearing seatbelts and sitting safely, with their seatbelts on, in the back seat of the car.

Out of school trips
A number of grades will be taking trips out of school next week either on IPC or ‘end of year’ trips. Trips out of school are an important part of our curriculum, our children know that they can learn in many different ways and in many different places, and we depend on you to ensure that your children take part in the learning offered on trips out of school. Children on school trips always use buses which are fitted with seatbelts! (See above)

Maths Relays
All children in UP will be taking part in maths relays next week. We have borrowed these events from the secondary maths department. They are a great way of encouraging the children to consolidate maths concepts, compete for their tribes, have fun and get fit - all at the same time.

Science Fair
Children in UP and secondary are taking part in our first school Science Fair. In small groups pupils are working on developing a scientific experiment on the theme of ‘Our Wonderful World’. I have seen, and have had explained, some very good and thoughtful ideas in school this week. The final judging for the best experiment in each grade will take place on Friday 14th June.

Jubilee Library
During our summer holidays the Jubilee Library will be open for you to bring your children to come and borrow books every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 12 noon. Reading regularly over the holiday is the best way of making sure that your child does not slip back academically before the beginning of the next school year.

Reports
End of year reports for all Primary pupils will be sent home on Friday 14th June.

Secondary News

We have had a great sporting week this week with many teams reaching finals of the Indes basketball and football events for both boys and girls and some of these finals will be played next week. The U16 Boys won their final on Thursday with a dramatic 3-2 victory and we are proud of their determination and teamwork. You can see a photograph and a report of the game by Daniel Castillo (Class 2016) on the ABC Newsblog

On Thursday all students will go home at 12.15 after the Grade 6-8 swimming finals and the Grade 9 Awards Assembly. Students from Grade 10 and Grade 11 must return to their tutor rooms at 4.30 pm at the latest to represent the school in the graduation ceremony for the Class 2013.

Grade 9 have their final week in school next week as they will be on Work Experience during the final week. They have their Model United Nations day next Friday and will also be collecting their final reports for the school year on Friday. They have an Awards Assembly on Thursday at 11.30 to which parents are invited.

We are always anxious to hear your views on school and would ask that you take a few minutes to answer the parent questionnaire we are sending home via email today.
