 From the Secondary Leadership Team

12 weeks of successful online learning in the Secondary School.

And here we are.. 12 weeks into the term this year and the first half term complete, and all online! It has overall been a very positive experience, as shown in the feedback surveys and the comments we receive daily from all members of the community. In this weekly post, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge some key successes we have had over this half term and give you the opportunity to reflect on what we mean by assessment and feedback leading up to the end of Cal1.

Throughout this term, staff have undertaken a large amount of professional development to further their practice. We would like to congratulate Mr Walter Arevalo of the Science department on his recently awarded English Bachelor Degree Diploma. Well done, Walter!; Other staff have been undertaking further training, including:

  • Increased members of staff with Level 1 and 2 Google Educator Certifications

  • Curriculum planning and timetabling training

  • OLEVI International Creative Teacher Programme

  • Online Excellence Courses

  • Collaboration and sharing of excellent practice every week.

We can safely say that we are doing everything we can to help our teachers to allow them to continue to give your children the best learning experiences possible even when we are working online. On top of this, we have recently moved to Google Enterprise of Education, which has given teachers the ability to enhance their online learning classrooms and increase the level of group work, interaction and collaboration.

We have all continued to develop. The efforts of the students and the quality of work created while learning online have been awe-inspiring. Earlier this week I asked staff to share examples of outstanding work from their classes and in this document you can find some excellent examples of what has been happening across the school. Some highlights:

  • Music: Alejandro Gonzalez G11 who has produced an exceptional arrangement of John Lennon's Imagine in a swing jazz style. He made the arrangement and also recorded the guitar parts live. Video of this is here

  • ITGS: We invite you to view and interact with a small collection of the work from 12th Grade ITGS page of the ICT Webpage.

  • Life Skills: Grade 9 have created posters to gain a better understanding about how they can be safer when using the internet.

Assessment, Feedback and Cal 1 Reports

At the end of a half term, it is often a good point to look back and reflect on what has been successful and also what can be improved. Over the month of November, we will be collecting the attainment and attitudinal data from the teachers to create and publish the Cal 1 reports.

Last week I attended a keynote speech organised by the LAHC from John Hattie (a well-known professor of education) who questioned what assessment and feedback should and should not be. He identified that assessment is the tool used to give teachers feedback to improve lessons further and help support the students with their individual needs. The importance of assessment is the feedback it delivers to everyone involved. Below are three important points we must remember about feedback from assessments (source):

  1. Feedback is not advice or evaluation. Feedback is information about how we are doing in our efforts to reach a goal.

  2. If the students know the 'classroom' is a safe place to make mistakes, they are more likely to use feedback for learning.

  3. When a grade is given as part of feedback, students routinely read only as far as the grade.

The third I believe to be the most important, as students need to understand how to read beyond the grade they are given for their Cal. When students receive their Cal 1 grades over the next month, we want them to be able to look beyond the grade given and think carefully about the feedback their teachers have given them to improve. In order for progress to take place, students need to understand the context in which the grade has been given and what specific skills they need to develop to move to the next level and beyond. I urge all students to find some time to speak with their teachers following the Cal 1 reports if their expectations of themselves do not match with the feedback they have been given and have a powerful discussion about the next steps.

On the Cal 1 reports, I would advise all parents to have a close look at the Work Skills reported and check student Tribal Stars and Flags using the iSAMS parent portal. Having an understanding of your child's attitude towards learning isnow more important than ever before as students become more independent with their learning.

The Cal 1 reports will be released for all grades throughout the months of November and December; please expect an email from the Head of Year of each grade when these are released. All reports are released using the Student and Parent iSAMS portals. If you have not yet signed up for your account, please do so by following these instructions.

Thank you!

To finish off this term I would like to say thank you. Thank you to all parents, for all the support you have given your children while they learn from home.

Thank you to the PAES teachers for preparing the Grade 12’s for their upcoming AVANZO exams. We wish the Grade 12 all the best! They will be off normal lessons until they return on Wednesday 11th November.

A huge thank you to the LSU for all of their support in the well being of our community!

We look forward to seeing you all back online on Monday 9th November!

ABC LRC Book Pickup Service *Library2Go

The ABC libraries have worked very hard to put together a safe, efficient system for library book reservations, pickups and drop offs, which has been functioning for two weeks now. The booking and pickup service will be paused during the half term break but will resume again when we return to lessons again on Monday 9th November.

It is a system whereby our librarians will be available to check out books that students have reserved through the system, using the Hold It option. The librarians will closely monitor the holds each week, prepare student book bags and ensure that students who reserve books are contacted, as soon as their book bag is ready for pickup. Please do take a moment to read more about how this system works, here.

Wellbeing time / Early finish days

Over the course of the next term we have planned for some days where we will be finishing earlier than usual at 1pm. These dates are Tuesday 17th November and Friday 4th December. We are currently planning some time next half term to allow students to reflect on their learning and have discussions with their tutors to help support their wellbeing as well as other exciting events. More information on this to come.

Primary Parent Partnership with Alistair Bryce Clegg

We are very excited to be working with Alistair Bryce Clegg over the next two years. Alistair is one of the leading authorities on Play in Education in the UK. He is also an award-winning author and product designer. On Thursday 12th of November (7am-8am) we are inviting primary parents to join Alistair as he talks to us about the importance of play in education... how it prepares children for future success, both academically and personally, and how to support and facilitate it at home.

Kinder Literacy Workshop for Parents

On Tuesday 17th at 5.30pm we will be running a session for Kinder parents about early development of reading and writing skills. Kinder students have begun to learn the phonics sounds through the Jolly Phonics programme, and we are inviting parents to come and learn more about our early literacy curriculum. Jolly Phonics is a fun and muliti-sensory phonics method that gets children reading and writing from an early age. This means that we teach letter sounds as opposed to the alphabet. When reading a word, they recognise the letters and blend together the respective sounds; when writing a word they identify the sounds and write down the corresponding letters. These skills are called blending and segmenting. These are two of the five skills that children need to master phonics:

  1. Learning the letter sounds

  2. Learning letter formation

  3. Blending

  4. Segmenting

  5. Tricky words

 From the Director

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of our community as a legal entity. There will be a small virtual celebration to recognise the wisdom, courage and foresight of those who founded our school at which they will each be presented with a special sculpture of an ant. An individual ant is a small and relatively insignificant creature but through effective communication, cooperation and collaboration together they can achieve amazing things. There’s a lesson in that somewhere...

The first students entered our school in February of 1971 and we are already brainstorming ideas for how we can celebrate this (do pass yours on if you have any). In the meantime, like the British monarch, we have two birthdays so, for now, let’s just say, ”Happy Birthday to us!!”

Here’s to the next 50 years!

Have a great weekend!

Library Collection Service - Now Open!

We are pleased to announce that the Library will begin lending physical copies of books. Books can be reserved through the Jubilee Library System, using the Hold It option. The librarians will closely monitor the holds each week. Please contact the school librarians if you need help logging in. You may check out up to 8 books for a 1 month period and you will be able to renew these books for one month more, if needed.

When you place a hold on a book it will be processed as soon as it is available. You will then be contacted by a librarian via email, to confirm it is ready for pickup (the book will not be ready until you receive a confirmation email from the librarian. Please ignore the automatic message in the system which says the book is ready for collection). The book/s will then be available for pickup for a total of 7 days.

Lower Primary Parents can email Ms Isa directly if you would like her to choose a selection of 8 age-appropriate books for you. We will soon be adding more levelled reading books to the library collection, to better enable you to choose a book at the right instructional reading level.

Safety First

The ABC is dedicated to keeping our community safe. Please be aware that books which are to be picked up  and those that are returned, are committed to a strict book quarantine and disinfection regiment, by our librarians who have followed all of the required biosecurity normatives.

Book Pickup

Pickup will take place at the Administration entrance. You will need to park the car and go in person to the Administration reception area. The book bags can be collected from the pickup table in this location. Book Bags will be labelled with the name of the student, grade,  and the date the confirmation email was sent.

Book Drop-Off

You can drop off books in the big boxes in the admin carpark. You can also drop-off English and Spanish homework reading books, or the book that you received in the gift bag if you are finished with them. Please do not put the book in a plastic bag. Non-library books can be labelled by placing a note inside the front cover of the book.

From the Secondary School Leadership Team

Staff have been writing a number of university reference letters recently, many of them directed towards the US.  I first wrote reference letters for US universities in 2010.  The style felt alien to a Brit who’d been trained in a particular type of formality.  Regardless of whether they are subject or counsellor references, letters supporting student applications to the US are anecdotal celebrations of achievement, qualities and skills.  As a referee this means we need to: pinpoint moments that evidence growth; moments that demonstrate initiative; moments of care and consideration for others or the community; moments when students chose to stand out amongst the crowd, whether by testing new ideas in class, standing up for a cause or initiating a project.  And of course, we also need to comment on academics.

In short - these references provide a perfect time for reflection.

I’ve worked with The Class of 2021 since they were in Grade 8.  This is our fifth year working together.  It’s been impressive looking back.  What really struck me was the way so many students have transferred skills across all aspects of school life and beyond.  We have sports team members who commit to grueling training schedules and apply themselves with exactly the same dedication to class activities and assignments.  Student Council representatives embody what it means to be a ROC whilst innovating and developing a student government for future generations.  The list of achievements is impressive: documentary making, entrepreneurship, collecting for charities, helping businesses during the pandemic, setting up CIMAT and much more.  The common denominator is that all these students are focused on their journey.  They demonstrate the same willingness to go the extra mile in class, to confront a challenge and to open themselves up to the possibility of making mistakes and learning from them.  These achievements are the things that make universities sit up and take notice.  They’re also the things that are often easy to overlook or forget to ask about.  I’ve genuinely enjoyed looking back over the numerous reasons G12s have to be celebrating their time at the ABC and their dedication to preparing for their time beyond school; I fully encourage you to spend some time listening to your sons and daughters achievements over the course of the past week or two and then hearing how they plan to build on these successes.

Self regulation and growth clearly play a central role in these success stories which is part reason why self-regulation and growth in the Digital World was the theme of our secondary parent partnership, hosted by the LSU and Ms Chavez on Wednesday.  They discussed how to support students and ourselves in managing a digital world, and how to use the opportunity of online learning to develop skills that will create resilient,  goal-oriented individuals who can self-start and self-manage their way towards success and wellbeing.

During the meeting they promised to share some of the apps that can help manage time in your digital devices (beware some are for android and some are for IOS and may not be available for all devices or for El Salvador):
