Friday 24 May 2019

Words from the Director

This time of year is always exciting as we look back on the last school year, celebrate graduation of our senior class and plan for the new academic year.

We start next week with the Senior Exit celebrations on Tuesday when the Class of 2019 will enter school together and spend the morning reminiscing on their school days. To facilitate this I do advise you try to arrive early on Tuesday to drop your children off. The PAC entrance will be closed from 6.50 to 7.30 am. During this time the only access will be through the Administration car park which will remain open as usual. We will be allowing Lower Primary children to be dropped off until 7.40 am so you can plan to drop them off in the PAC car park after the Senior Entry.

Next Friday, the 31st of May we have the Headmasters reception to welcome the Class of 2019 into the Exabrit community. This is an event to which all Exabrits are welcome but we especially request attendance from the classes of 2014, 2009, 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989 and 1984. Please come along and meet old friends and have a look at your school. If you know Exabrits from these years especially please do pass on this invitation. We hope to have a wonderful reunion and make a special welcome for the Class of 2019. If you do plan to attend we would be grateful if you would reply to this invitation so we have an idea of numbers to cater for. Please confirm by writing to: anabellasoto@abc-net.edu.sv

There are a number of other important events coming up over the next few weeks including our lap of honour, Logros event, achievement assemblies, Acción de gracias and graduation day for the parents of the graduating class. All of these events are on our calendar with brief details. Please do contact us if you have any doubts or require further clarification of their purpose.

I am looking forward to seeing our U16 boys play in the quarter final of the College Cup on Saturday as well as welcoming our Grade 8 Washington trip back home after their visit to DC. I would like to thank many parents and the US Embassy for helping arrange activities which the usual visitors to Washington do not get so easily.

Sports

We have an exciting end to our year of amazing sports success, both in terms of participation as well as achievements. As part of our reflection on the year which included a visit from Joe Terrasi of the Positive Coaching Alliance we would ask parents to fill out this survey which will only take a few minutes and will help us plan for next year.

Words from the Head of Primary

This week we have had Kinder parents join our Literacy workshops as well as parents coming in to read to children. This is a powerful way to share with parents what we do at school. Over the year parents have been invited to Primary to become involved in their child’s learning.

The Benefits of parent involvement helps extend teaching outside the classroom, creates a more positive experience for children and helps children perform better when they are in school. It is essential for parents to support the learning that happens in preschool settings at home as well.

Research has shown that when parents are involved, the child will not only do better in school, but will also go further too. Studies also show that students get better grades, have better social skills, score higher on tests, attend school regularly, and continue their education even after they graduate.

Parents have benefits too. They are more likely to have confidence in themselves as parents, are held in a higher esteem from the teachers, and are more likely to continue their own education. Once parents can see these benefits and the value that they can bring to their child’s education, they will not be able to say they don’t have any time to be involved.

So, when you are invited to come to school we would love to see you. I know a busy life can be a challenge but the benefits to your child far outweigh the negatives. At ABC we strongly believe in a positive relationship between the home and the school. If we work together your child/children will know that they are being supported at school and at home, which means Effort leads to Success!

Drop Off in the Morning- A HUGE thank you to parents for speeding up the drop off of children. I’ve noticed a better flow of cars, which means parents get through quicker. While we can’t control traffic outside the school, we can do our bit to ensure a quick drop off done in a safe way.

Book of the Week
Endangered Animals by Martin Jenkins and Tom Frost

A wealth of information is conveyed in the stylish illustrations. The threatened creature takes centre stage with their common and Latin names written. The country where they are currently found is named at the top, with a price of the stamp in the local currency at either side. Down the sides the words First Class Post in capital letters emphasise the urgency with which action is needed before these animals die out.

Thirty animals are featured and opposite the large illustration there are more specific details about each one, compiled by a conservation biologist, giving information about the circumstances under which they have become endangered and a location map. They include well known species such as the polar bear, the tiger and the blue whale and those less known such as the kakapo which is critically endangered in New Zealand and the Korean clubtail dragonfly.

Summer camp 2019 is now open for enrollment. We are running Maths, Spanish, English and Art classes for our Secondary students. This is a good opportunity to continue practicing and improving your skills in these areas.

"Let's all make positive Changes"

As a community we are always proud and impressed at the power of our youth and just how much young people can contribute to our society. This week I want to share with you a report by one of our activists - well done Luis Alejandro!

Kidney Bean Campaign
From Luis Alejandro Rosales- class of 2021

Have we observed around us how much need there is in the world?

As students, we have the obligation to comply with a certain amount of social hours, but do we really know what they mean? This happened to me ... I had to complete my social hours and the idea started in my head.

I thought of making a project so I took some time to think about what I should choose as the cause for the project and after discussing it with my mom, I decided on Kidney failure because my grandmother has lived with the disease for more time than I can remember. It is the only disease that I have seen face to face and all of its complications.

After thinking about the cause, I remembered that doctors say: “Drink more water”, so I thought: by this I can develop a campaign motivating students to drink more water by selling squeezes and the money I would collect I could use it to bring some happiness to children who already are suffering this illness.

I emailed the idea to Mrs Cáceres and she approved it and directed me with Mrs. Chavez who helped me set up the first part of the project at school. I presented the project in assemblies and we sold the squeezes at school. Thank you Ms Chávez for all your help! My mother was also always with me.

After all of the planning and execution of the project, I sold 47 squeezes! In the meantime, I contacted with Ludoteca Hospital de Niños Benjamin Bloom to explain my idea and they understood all of it. They agreed and were happy because, they really need help. They sent me a list of necessities of patients and I bought them with the money collected from the squeezes and I made the packs.

When we arrived at the hospital, I didn’t know what would really happen, I was nervous and excited, my work would finally come true. Andrea, Luis Arturo and Juan Marco came with me. At the hospital, we met incredible children and people which made the experience even better than what I expected. When we had to leave, I realized that I was also benefited from this experience, I learned to appreciate my health while helping others. I had never been so proud after thinking: I made this moment happen!

As I said at the start, the end of year is fast approaching and with it, many emotions and excitement. But the school year is not over yet! It is really important to keep our focus and strong work ethic til the very end and I ask all parents to remind their children that being punctual, respecting our regulations of uniform and attendance and above all, giving their best at all times, continues to be the norm! There are four more weeks ahead and they are jammed packed with activities and learning opportunities. Do not squander them! These have all been prepared by very hard working members of staff and I would like to thank them for all their work!

A reminder of this Parent Partnership session coming up for the class of 2020 to come along and join their children at this talk. Thank you to our University counselling department for arranging it. We look forward to seeing you there!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón

Words from the Director

An ABC education is a journey which culminates in a series of international qualifications which complement our values and school vision. These international qualifications require examinations and related assessments which are set and marked by overseas. The Class of 2019 and 2021 are sitting these examinations this month. The ABC is a school whose students score highly in these international examinations with many students achieving the top grades. We are the only school in this part of the world that enters children for such a wide range of IGCSE and examinations and preparation for them lies at the heart of our educational programme alongside our values.

As the Class of 2019 complete their IB examinations they will be looking forward to their graduation events which start with their senior exit the week after next. These events can be seen on the school calendar.

Members of the Class of 2023 are on an educational trip to Washington D.C. We are confident they will have a wonderful experience.

I hope you all have an enjoyable weekend. I am out of school for a few days visiting my new school but will be home by the later part of the week.

Words from the Head of Primary

The partnership between school and home is a vital factor in the development of our children. As a learning community we have always recognised the value of reading at home in all sorts of ways. Not just the child reading to the parents but sharing books together, reading books without words and making up the story to go with the pictures, guessing what might happen next. All of these things really help with children’s academic development.

All it takes is 10-20 minutes of reading at home per day with your child. If you want advice on how to establish these routines please do ask but we suggest you take turns to choose a book that is high interest for you and/or your child. I remember a boy I taught who loved knowing all about planes. He even loved reading the safety card and he could tell me how to evacuate a plane in an emergency!! Reading provides access to a range of worlds children would otherwise not be able to see.

After School Pick-Ups- Thank you to the vast majority of parents who collect their child/children promptly after school. Unfortunately on occasions a small number of children are waiting until as late as 4.45pm to be collected. They have had a busy day at school and by the end of the day they are tired and need to be picked up on time. We ask that if you are going to be delayed, please inform us or organise a trusted adult to collect your child/children. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Book of the Week
Race to the Frozen North. The Matthew Henson Story by Catherine Johnson

At the age of eleven Matthew Henson left a home and walked to Washington DC where he found work in a happier environment in Janey’s Café. Inspired by the stories of regular customer Baltimore Jack, Matthew left for Baltimore and joined a ship as a cabin boy. This is the first of many journeys for him to many places and also the life journey on which he learned many skills– how to read and write, how to navigate by the stars, how to treat sailors who were sick and to speak enough Spanish, Russian and Chinese to get by.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

We come to the end of another busy week and our students continue working hard on their exams. Next week Grade 9 and Grade 11 also will be taking exams and we wish them the very best for them. Please can we ask that parents support their children by ensuring they are getting a good night’s sleep and using their time wisely at home revising. Here is a very interesting article which you can read together with your child in preparation for their exams.

Thank you to all the community for their support in our No visible mobile phone on campus campaign. We are so happy to see our students spending time together and enjoying talking with each other and even playing games together at break and lunchtimes, instead of being disconnected from each other.

Summer holidays are coming up soon and we are busy preparing our Annual Summer Camp! Please note that we will be running courses for Secondary students who are looking to improve in their Spanish, Maths and Art skills. Enrollment is open and you can come to Caja to ensure your place We look forward to working with them!

Tomorrow we say BON VOYAGE to our Grade 8 students who will be going to Washington DC! This is the second year this trip runs and we know they will have a wonderful time! Thank you to Mr Hall, Mrs Cristales, Mr Nicholas and Mrs Hall who are working tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of this trip. Our teachers will be contacting and communicating with us and with parents regularly, however we ask that if you do not hear from them as often as you would want, to please be patient as their number one priority is to be working closely with the students and looking after them and therefore they may be delayed sending pictures or messages. Have a wonderful time!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Kind regards,

Words from the Director

I would like to wish everyone a great family day tomorrow. I know technically speaking it is Mothers Day but in my experience of ABC mothers I see them as amazing examples and passionate advocates of family and love for our families. I know you will celebrate tomorrow and enjoy the day as a family. We will see you all back in school on Tuesday. Please note school will be open for IGCSE and IB exams tomorrow and on Monday.

Thank you to those parents who came to the strategic planning meeting. Please do write to Anabella Soto (anabellasoto@abc-net.edu.sv) if you would like to attend a similar session on Tuesday at 7 pm in the ABCLT.

I would like to express my thanks to everyone who has been involved in Book week and follow up activities across the school this week and next week. Reading is such an important part of human history and entertainment and we have shown some great examples to our children. It is important we continue to do so at home and at school as we work together in our community.

Words from the Head of Primary

It is only weeks to the end of term and the teachers are working hard starting to complete end of year assessments and to write reports. They are also preparing for our end of year celebrations. In Upper Primary this takes the form of Achievement assemblies and for Grade 5 the Moving On assembly. Please make sure all the students will be present. On the June 20th it is the LP and UP Primary talent shows. Students should be thinking about what they would like to do. Please support your children in preparing for their performances.

Parent Readers- A HUGE thank you to the parents who have come into school to read to our students. It has been amazing and the children have loved it. This follows on nicely from our successful Book Week.

Book of the Week
The King Who Banned the Dark by Emily Haworth-Booth

When a little boy grows up to be king, he decides to use his power to tackle his fear of the dark by banning it. His advisors persuade him that the best way to do this is by convincing the people that it was what they wanted anyway. They even plan a celebration of the dark ban with a grand fireworks display but maybe the people are not as susceptible as the king and his advisors believe…

Today is Mother’s Day. I hope all the Mothers in our community have a wonderful day. I also hope all our students do something nice for their Mother! School is closed Monday.

Best wishes for a long wonderful weekend.

Dear parents and carers,

Our IB and IGCSE students are off to a great start with their examinations! It is a very exciting and challenging time for them and I thank all the parents for their support in ensuring they are using their time wisely and arriving to their exams in time.

We are very busy with Grade 9 and 11 preparing for their final exams which are coming up and we are confident they will be very successful in them! Mr Hall has shared the exams timetable so please take a moment to go over it with your children.

We ran our Leadership training session for our Student Leaders on Friday. Student Council Executive Team and our Head Students and Prefect body came together for a workshop on developing their leadership skills and their own personal vision. I thank Mr Keslake, Mr Hogan and Ms Chávez for their contribution and running of the workshop. I know from speaking with our students they found it thought provoking.

WE look forward to our Talent Show 2019! Please encourage your children to participate!!

Words from the Director

It was lovely to see so many happy faces as children returned to school on Monday. I have to admit to having very mixed emotions about this term as I realise it will be my last term here at the ABC. However I recognise the importance of this term at so many levels. It is vital that our children end the year well, learning more as well as reflecting in the year overall. Research clearly shows the importance of reflection in order to consolidate the learning process. It also shows that children need to continue thinking about and practicing newly learned skills during the long vacation ahead. Please do plan your vacation with time for your children to practice and reflect on the year which is coming to an end. Teachers are happy to help with advice and ideas for doing so.

Following the very successful CIS visit earlier this year we are now establishing our new three year strategic plan. The new Director, Mr. Stephen Lang is already actively involved in this process. During this month we are consulting with staff, parents and student council teams to get their input and ideas for priorities in our new strategic plan. To this end I would like to invite parents to workshop forums on Thursday 9 May at 7 am or Tuesday 14 May at 6.30 pm where we will present the themes and goals and ask for feedback from parents. This will include all aspects of the strategic plan including infrastructure priorities. All parents are welcome to attend but if you intend doing so please try to confirm your attendance on this link to Anabella Soto. We are holding separate forums at separate times to try to make them more accessible for more parents.

I would like to clarify that next Friday the 10 May is Mother’s Day and a national holiday. School will therefore be closed. On Monday the 13 May school is closed for students. All the details are on our school calendar.

Congratulations to our Swim team for an amazing meeting over the last two days. It has been great to see so many participants and so much success. I am also pleased to report that all our football teams have been successful and are heading for qualification to the next round of the competition.

I hope you all have a great weekend with your children.

Words from the Head of Primary

Welcome back after a two week break. Our students returned to our wonderful Book Week. I hope your child/children have been talking to you about the books they are reading and the books being read to them. Parents are encouraged to read to their child/children every day. Have your children read to you. Ask questions about the book! Show that you love books to.

We still have seven weeks of school, which means the continuation of learning programmes. We are also looking towards the new school year (2019/20) with a whole raft of decisions to be made. All our decisions will be focussed on ensuring your child/children receive the best education with a dedicated staff and a positive learning environment. Our Core Values will drive our commitment to quality learning where Effort Leads to Success

Through our three year Strategic Plan we will be working hard, alongside our Secondary colleagues, to improve and develop our learning programmes as well as provide a safe, active and challenging school environment. Critical to success is a strong partnership between ABC and its’ community.

Student Drop-Offs- One of the concerns outlined in the recent parent survey has been the issue of the traffic! I can understand the frustration of traffic congestion. When children are being dropped off, most parents/children are organised with their bags, etc and the drop off takes less than one minute. However a number of drop offs take a lot longer because the bags are in the boot, or parents are giving money/instructions or children are just too slow. This can cause delays because there is not a smooth flow!

To help parents ensure a faster and safer drop off, we recommend the following:
  • Bags are on children’s laps or beside them on the seat
  • Give money/instructions before leaving the house or if you have stopped at the traffic lights
  • Remind the children as you come through the school gate to be prepared to be dropped off
  • Parents drive up behind the front car a the drop off point
  • Car doors are only opened when the car has completely stopped
  • If for any reason there is an issue which will cause delays to other parents, please drive around again
Sala Cuna and Cafeteria- If you are contacting the Cafeteria to have food delivered to your child in Sala Cuna please make sure that ‘Sala Cuna’ is indicated in the subject of the email or at the start of the phone call to ensure the order is prioritised and is delivered to the correct location.

Book of the Week
A Kid in My Class by Rachel Rooney. Illustrated by Chris Riddell

Open this book and meet your new class. Look at the wonderful Chris Riddell’s drawings and then read Rachel Rooney’s poems and get to know them. Maybe you’ll find a child you already know or find someone who reflects the child in yourself.

A variety of poetic forms abound. There are list poems and conversation poems to describe the characteristics of kids in this class, such as ‘Copycat’ in which that annoying kid repeats everything you say in exactly the same tone! Each poem is accompanied by a pen drawing of the kid being described with a larger illustration in dreamy shades of blue that suggest a fantasy world.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

I hope you have all enjoyed a very pleasant break with your children and family. We started our final term on Monday and it is 8 weeks long. They are filled with important learning opportunities, activities, exam period (G9 and G11) and of course the International examinations (G10 and G12.) as well as Work Experience for Grade 9 and all the Awards assemblies at the end of the year!

Please we ask that you do not book family holidays, doctors appointments and other events which take our students away from school in this final term.

Respectfully we also ask for your help and support regarding the respect to our school uniform and attendance and punctuality regulations. Every day our students should arrive at school with plenty of time to go to their lockers and prepare for the day ahead and be ready in their tutor rooms for the 7.00 am bell.

Please do not drop off students in the lay way opposite the nurse station as this is a dangerous area for students to cross the road with cars coming in both ways.

Please refer to our uniform expectations published on our webpage (as well as outlined in the parent agreement signed upon enrollment each year)

Uniform and Jewellery: (En) (Es)

Please take this weekend to verify your children's uniforms and their correct fit. They have all grown since August so girls' skirts and length of boys' trousers may need alterations. This is also true of the PE short- it must not be fashion fit, but appropriate for school. Shoes must also be appropriate for school, this means properly fitting (not folded at the back) black and leather. In particular, we expect all boys to be cleanly shaved every day. If you son has a particular medical need regarding shaving, please we ask for your support to see they shave at home so this does not become a problem. Girls are expected to wear only stud earrings and not more than one per ear, as well as refrain from wearing make up and nail varnish.

Finally, I take this opportunity to remind you of the ban on mobile phones we have this term. We do not want to see mobile phones on the campus, including the car park. Please arrange pick up time with your children before dropping them off to school and should you need to contact your child, please call the school office and we will gladly send them the message.

I take this opportunity to wish our Class of 2019 and Class of 2021 every success in their International Examinations, which have started this week. Today was the last school day of our Grade 12 students! We look forward to their Senior Exit on Tuesday 28th of May, once their IB exams are over.

Grade 10 and Grade 12 students are welcome on campus to do private study or use the LRC and our resources as much as they like however please note that students must wear correct day uniform (not PE kit) at all times if on campus.

Also please note that students may not leave between examinations. They must remain on campus until the end of their final exam of the day.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to a very successful final term!
