Words from the Director

Education is unfair. Let me illustrate…..

David Beckham, the former professional footballer, was routinely mocked in the media during his career for being relatively uneducated, even unintelligent. And yet Beckham could stand behind an attacking free-kick and visualise, almost instantaneously, the exact parabola through which the ball would have to travel to clear a defensive wall and arrive in the top corner of the goal with sufficient speed to beat the goalkeeper’s dive. He could instantly compute every aspect of the ball’s flight including direction, distance, speed, curve, arc and dip. Even more impressively he could make subtle adjustments in these calculations to take account of wind speed and temperature, even, believe it or not, humidity, altitude, goalkeeper agility, and the design and pressure of the ball. All of this information he could then translate into an instinct, an intuition, for how he must strike the ball to achieve the perfect outcome. Genius. And yet I assure you that David Beckham passed few if any academic examinations!

The concept of multiple intelligences has been accepted for many years now and yet the way in which we assess children, the way in which we decide their future life chances, has hardly changed for decades.

You may not be aware that we use Cognitive Abilities Testing (CAT4) in Grades 2, 4, 7 and 9 to give us a tremendously powerful insight into our children as learners. These short tests assess children in 4 areas: Verbal (words/language), Quantitative (Number work), Non-verbal (Patterns) and Spatial (Visual/physical awareness). Of these four areas, which test results do you think are the most accurate indicator of future likely performance in Maths? Quantitative, right? Stands to reason. Wrong. The performance in the VERBAL tests is the most accurate indicator of likely success in Maths. It seems shocking at first doesn’t it but when we think about it for a moment, it makes perfect sense. We learn by listening and reading and talking and writing. Our textbooks and teachers use language to explain concepts to us in all subjects and our exam papers use it to test how much we know. This is fine for those who have a facility with language (high CAT verbal scores, for example) but unfair on those with different cognitive strengths.
Soon after I arrived at the ABC, I looked carefully at all of the CAT data that we hold as a school and a consistent pattern became immediately clear. On average the verbal skills of our students are significantly lower than their skills in the other 3 areas putting them at a significant disadvantage in the current educational assessment context. Having identified this challenge, we have already agreed as a school on a wide range of ways in which we can tackle this, of which I will tell you more in the weeks ahead. However, we can’t do it alone. If you want to significantly enhance your children’s chances of success in education, and in life thereafter, my advice is simple…..support and encourage them in their reading!

Words from the Head of Primary

It is hard to believe we are at the end of our second week. Students and teachers have been working hard to develop positive relationships, routines and a learning culture within the classroom that fits with the ABCs Values and Curriculum.

It was great to see so many parents attend the Back to School meetings. This commitment from parents means we are ensuring a positive partnership between the home and the school. This relationship will contribute to your child’s success at the ABC because we put the child at the centre and they feel supported and are prepared to put in the effort! Effort leads to Success.

As I mentioned in a previous newsletter the whole school is focusing on Literacy so students can significantly improve their English. In Primary we have a number of strategies that we are using to support strengthening Literacy. I want to focus on one, which is Guided Reading.

Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of readers. During the lesson, the teacher provides a text that students can read with support, coaching the learners as they use problem-solving strategies to read the text. The ultimate goal is independent reading.

The teacher has used recent data, their own assessments and observations to place students in four or five groups. One group is with the teacher, another group is with the Learning Assistant and the other groups have independent activities based on the book they have read or will be reading. Each day the groups change their activities, so every group works with the teacher at least once during the week.

We have dedicated the first period to Literacy (35 minutes) and Guided Reading (20 minutes). Also, the Primary SMT team have been working with a group in each Grade 5 class. Another strategy is to use Literacy in all the Specialist subjects- ICT, Art, Music, PE.

Our aim is to ensure all students from Pre-Kinder to Grade 12 have success in knowing, using and understanding the English language alongside the Spanish language. Research has shown that students learning English as a second language can struggle with their learning and therefore their achievements can suffer. We aim to ensure all our students have success with the English language and are confident life-long learners.

11 Ways Parents Can Help Their Children Read

Parents often ask how they can help their children learn to read; and it’s no wonder that they’re interested in this essential skill. Reading plays an important role in later school success. Here are 11 practical recommendations for helping preschoolers and school-age students learn to read.

1. Teaching reading at home.

2. Parents as first teachers- Teaching literacy isn’t different than teaching other skills.

3. Talk to your kids (a lot).

4. Read to your kids.

5. Have them tell you a “story.”

6. Teach phonic awareness.

7. Teach phonics (letter names and their sounds).

8. Listen to your child read.

9. Promote writing.

10. Ask questions.

11. Make reading a regular activity in your home.
BOOK OF THE WEEK

Playing with Collage by Jeannie Baker

Many of Jeannie Baker’s delightful and thought-provoking picture books with her distinctive collage illustrations be found in her other books- Where the Forest Meets the Sea, Belonging, Window and Mirror. Here she explains how she does it and encourages children to be creative themselves using a vast range of possible materials. She suggests different kinds of paper that could be used and then goes on to explore what can be used from nature, the beach and the kitchen, taking into consideration colour, texture and pattern. An inspirational book which will have children and adults collecting interesting materials and will be a real treasure to have around during the summer holidays. The presentation is very enticing with carefully labelled photos of often unexpected materials.

#HealthyABC

Primary teachers have been delighting in their snack and lunch times with the children. The reason why? Healthy lunch boxes!
We now know that what we eat and how we exercise has a significant impact on cognitive function and endorphin regulation; alongside neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. Meaning, that food and exercise positively affect how we think and feel; how our brain grows and changes throughout our life.

In order to celebrate these healthy choices we are launching #healthyABC on both our Facebook and Instagram. Simply use #healthyABC when posting photos of healthy lunchboxes or exercise activities you have been doing as a family. Alternatively, you can email photos to Anabella Soto (anabellasoto@abc-net.edu.sv).

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

We have reached the end of our second week and I know we will close it in style with the second performance of ARCADIA! I must begin this weekly by congratulating the class of 2021 on a fabulous show! What I most enjoyed was how every single member of the class transmitted their enthusiasm and enjoyment to the audience, making us feel part of the whole show. It was wonderful to see.

PSAT

From Mr. Hernández

For students planning to attend universities or colleges in the United States, Canada or Europe an SAT score is usually required. The Preliminary SAT, also known as the PSAT/NMSQT® (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a practice version of the SAT exam. The PSAT is 2 hours and 45 minutes long and tests your skills in reading, writing, and math. Unlike the SAT, the highest score possible on the PSAT is 1520. These scores reflect how students will do on the actual SAT exam and are extremely useful in order to drill specific areas that need improvement. At the ABC we work closely with the Khan Academy and offer drop-in sessions where content knowledge, tips, and strategies are taught and practiced.

Words from the Director

Today I have spent quite a lot of time (and mental energy!) on drafting my welcome message for the website. It is very important to me to try to capture in it what is special about our learning community- to make clear our values, our beliefs, our passions. My first attempt (I have just re-read it and a second will be necessary!) extols some lofty ideals and sets out some grand intentions. But while the expression needs work and the structure some tweaking, I hope you would agree with the underlying sentiments. It says (and it’s true) that my ambition- our ambition- is to change the world. How? Through our children, of course. If we can teach them empathy, humility and tolerance, if we can develop in them resilience, courage and curiosity, if we can equip them with creative, critical thinking and communication skills and enhance their leadership qualities then surely they will make the world a better place?

But these are tough challenges we are setting ourselves. How does one teach empathy….or humility? How does one develop curiosity or courage in a child? What is for certain is that neither you, nor we, can do it alone. In Africa, where I have spent so much of my life, we have a saying: “It takes a whole village to raise a child”. If we are to succeed in delivering on our commitment to a values-based education that produces responsible outstanding citizens,- young men and women who will go out and change the world- then we will need to work together.

¡Feliz fin de semana!

Words from the Head of Primary

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are excited that the ABC is up and running and it has been a great start to the year. It seems as if we had never been away. Children are back in their classes with smiling faces and an enthusiasm for learning. They are getting to know new routines and having fun with their friends. Teachers are getting to know their new students and are busy preparing lessons. We have a wonderful team of teachers and support staff, who are committed to giving all our children at ABC many opportunities to learn and experience new things. However, we cannot do it alone so developing positive relationships with parents and the community is vital. This ensures a partnership that will last as long as your child is at school.

‘Effort leads to Success’ is at the heart of what makes this school successful because we put in the effort to ensure children are valued, respected and cared for.

Board Policy on Hair and Jewelry- Parents are kindly asked to ensure their child/children comply with Board policy on hair and jewelry. The policy is on our website and a requirement of children coming to the ABC is to follow the policies set by the Board.

Girls- Hair must be tied back for activities where it may interfere with learning or be a safety hazard. No nail polish. Only one pair of stud earrings.

Boys- Hair must be neat and tidy, is cut around their ears and must not extend over their collar. It must not need tying back

Chewing Gum- Chewing gum is not permitted at school

Your cooperation in these matters would be greatly appreciated.

This week we held our Welcome Back to School Nights. I hope you were able to come along and get more information about your child’s teacher. We thank all the parents who attended. Teachers were pleased to meet everyone and were keen to explain how the class is organised, what the daily routines are and answering questions.

This year we have two whole Primary focuses which we would like parents to know and act upon them. They are:

  • Wearing seat belts saves lives- always buckle your children into a seat belt
  • Healthy eating supports children’s learning- try and make home-made lunches

Upper Primary use the HCB, which is a very valuable tool for communication between the school and parents and it also contains information regarding drop off and pick up hours, Pass Club, the IPC process of learning, homework, school expectations and different school policies, rules and guidelines. The ABC Values and learning goals can also be found there. Please make the most of it. LP will soon be receiving reading folders for home.

If you want to know more about events and dates, you can always check them on line using the Whole School Calendar in Google or the Main Dates for the current school year, which can be found on the school’s website. www.abc.edu.sv

Extra Curricular Activities have begun and all children who signed for a Club can now stay after school. Please check the dates and times when the Clubs meet. This information is in the letter of invitation you received from Ms Luz Elena Huezo recently.

Keeping healthy involves a number of things including healthy eating, exercise, plenty of sleep, drinking water, mental health, staying safe and being loved. Mental health is a very important indicator of keeping healthy. The poster gives parents ideas to support positive mental health for their child/children.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers and Shawn Harris

An information book which explains to readers the history of the Statue of Liberty. Surprisingly the story begins in France where the Statue of Liberty was designed and first assembled before being taken apart and shipped to New York. After introducing a variety of interesting facts, almost halfway through the book Dave Eggers reveals the reason for the book’s title by making readers closely consider the statue’s right foot and realise that she is not standing still.

The text by Dave Eggers, known for his groundbreaking books for adults, is engaging and often humorous and well integrated with the collage illustrations of Shawn Harris.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

It has been a wonderful start to the school year and we are happy to see our students back on campus; whether it be in lessons, around the cafeteria at break or lunch, in the LRC or on the football field, it is wonderful how their enthusiasm and energy is contagious. Thank you to all parents who are making an effort in arriving punctually to school in order for their children not to miss their positive start to the day. It is important to remember that excellent attendance (no less than 95%) and punctuality are a vital component for academic and social/ emotional success at school.

Thank you so much for the attendance at the Know Your School Information sessions this week! We have Grade 7 and Grade 8 KYS next week and G11 and G12 in two week’s time. It is very important that you make time to attend these sessions and see what is happening this year. Please remember that your child will sit with you as we include these sessions under our Parent Partnership programme and this means that we will cover topics which will be useful conversations for both you and your child at home. This week we included topics like the Dangers of Vaping and vaping culture in teens, how to help our children become more independent and develop Self- Efficacy strategies as well as how to manage priorities and have an effective Life/ Work balance. Thank you to the Pastoral and LSU teams for all their work in putting together these information sessions.

Also in these sessions, we are distributing our Parent Charter which outlines our Rights and Responsibilities as ABC parents. Thank you to the President of the Parent Association for joining us in these sessions and reminding us of the importance of working together with other parents and with school in a spirit of trust and support. We encourage all parents to model the support we want our children to feel towards the school in order to have the happiest and best learning environment where they can and will thrive.

Don’t forget to purchase your tickets!

We held our Extra Curricular Fair today at lunchtime and I ask that you speak with your children at home to discuss which activities and clubs they will be joining this year and how they can use these opportunities for growth.

I would like to share with you a video by Jay Shetty which all our students watched and reflected upon at our Welcome Back to School assembly. Here is the link. I hope you can watch at home and discuss with them, what I asked them to think about:

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kind regards,
Natalia Cáceres Escalón

Words from the Director

Let me begin by extending a warm welcome to the families who are joining our learning community this year; we are delighted that you have decided to entrust us with your most precious of all possessions and I do assure you that we do not take the responsibility lightly. And, of course, welcome back to all our students (and their parents) who are continuing their learning journeys with us; it is going to be another vibrant, energetic and successful year, I have no doubt.

Of course, it is all new for me. I arrived in El Salvador almost 3 weeks ago now and so am feeling increasingly settled both in the country and at school. However, I have an awful lot to learn this year so I do hope you will be patient with me; it is certain that, despite my best efforts, I will at some point make mistakes or omissions. I have experienced nothing but warmth, friendliness, and encouragement so far for which I am very grateful, so I am sure I can count on your understanding and support.
I have become a great advocate of growth mindset over the course of the past few years. It has informed my approach to school leadership but also, I must say, my approach to parenting. If you are interested, there is a wealth of research and information on the internet. Perhaps start with https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/ Throughout the year ahead, I will be encouraging teachers and students to have a growth mindset: to recognise mistakes as opportunities to learn; to focus on their attitude to their work rather than the outcome; to be willing to take risks in the knowledge that there is no such thing as failure if we give every opportunity our best effort. It would be great if you were able to supplement our work on this at school by taking a similar approach at home. Try starting by banning any sentences that begin with “I can’t….”- I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by the results!

¡Feliz fin de semana!

Words from the Head of Primary

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school! We hope your children are excited about the new school year. I am sure they will be very happy to be in school, getting to know their new teacher and enjoying being back with their friends and making new ones.

Our new staff members have settled well and are ready to start a new school year. We are pleased to introduce Ms. Emily Gordon and Ms. Anisa Muflahi-Isley. Both will be teaching in Prepa. We are sure both of them will make a positive contribution to our school and community. The maintenance staff has been busy ensuring our learning environment is safe, clean and fit for our students.

We welcome our new families to the ABC school community. Please look out for parent meeting dates to give you some insight into how the school works, including important policies and procedures. These meetings are designed for parents to support their child/children to settle in and become acquainted with our school.

I wish you a fantastic new year. We are all looking forward to meeting our students and parents.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

It is my pleasure to wish you all a warm welcome back to school! Staff are busy this week preparing and getting ready to have our students back on campus with their enthusiasm and energy next week! I speak on behalf of all our staff when I say we are all looking forward to another great year in Secondary School at the ABC! !Bienvenidos!

I start this message with a warm welcome and thank all our staff. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication; please know that you are valued and greatly appreciated.

This year we are joined by the following teachers: firstly our new Director, Mr. Stephen Lang who will also teach in the English department. Ms. Claire Fenlon and Ms. Mia Franzen also join the English department. Mr. Jeremy Muflahi- Isley is our new Head of Maths department. Mr. Matthew Systma joins our Humanities department as History teacher. Ms. Helen Kinder joins our PAD department as Music teacher. The Science department welcomes Mr. Robert Mobey and Florence Priya Alexander in Chemistry, Ms. Sally Gower Fox in Biology and Rafia Ali in Physics and last but not least, the Spanish department welcomes Víctor González. We also welcome Alejandra Martinez in our University Counselling department and Paola Escapini in Maths. I know they will find in ABC students and families a source of support.

This year the ABC starts its new Strategic Plan, which has been shared with the community and will continue to be the focus of the whole school improvement plan. We continue to be committed to making every child feel welcome, safe and help them on their journey to discover and develop their talents and find their purpose. It is our Vision to “Develop Responsible Outstanding Citizens” and our mission is to work in partnership with our parents to ensure our students receive a high-quality, values-based education in a safe and nurturing environment which develops their full potential.
The ABC is a community based school and we must all do what we can to help support our students by communicating openly and respectfully with each other: parents, staff and students. I am a firm believer that it is important to have a good understanding of our student and parent body in order to enable the school to meet their needs and vice versa.

We have an open door policy which means that your voice and opinion matters. We encourage you to contact us using the established channels of communication should you have a concern or question or just want to share information with us. As a matter of courtesy and to allow for our staff workload, we ask that you allow 48 hours in order to receive a response to emails sent as well as to understand that in order to meet with staff during the school day, a scheduled appointment, via our office staff, is needed. Thank you in advance for your understanding that we will not be able to see you without prior appointments due to schedules.

As you know, education is a shared responsibility between the home, student, school and community. We believe in Teamwork and this requires a shared commitment to work together to help our children have a successful year. Please read all of the information in this message to see how parents can help at home, as well as how students can make sure they rise to the school’s expectations of them. I ask you to read all the information carefully so we are all clear regarding the school’s expectations and regulations. In particular we would like to ask you to prioritise punctuality and attendance to school as well as help your child observe our uniform policy, which has been emailed to parents. We are expecting no less than a 95% attendance to the school and please be advised you will be invited in to meet with us should your child’s attendance not meet this expectation.

We have scheduled sessions of information for parents throughout the year, such as Parent- Teacher meetings, Learning Review Days, Know Your School, Parent Partnership events, etc. Please read our ‘Weekly’ publication as well as keep a close eye on the School calendar on the website. All events and activities for parents are published there and you will be able to keep abreast of important information. In particular, we ask that you observe our published holiday times so our students do not lose out on their right to education by missing school days for family trips or other commitments which we ask that you schedule outside of school time, such as doctor appointments, etc. A very important source of information is also your Head of Year. They will keep you informed of events to do with your child’s year group.

We look forward to seeing you and your child at their “Know Your School” morning sessions. These will take place at 7.00am in the PAC and will start promptly. Please make a point of scheduling these into your personal calendars and ensure you attend. Studies demonstrate that parental support and involvement is a key factor in children’s academic and personal success.
