Words from the Director

Let me begin by extending a warm welcome to the families who are joining our learning community this year; we are delighted that you have decided to entrust us with your most precious of all possessions and I do assure you that we do not take the responsibility lightly. And, of course, welcome back to all our students (and their parents) who are continuing their learning journeys with us; it is going to be another vibrant, energetic and successful year, I have no doubt.

Of course, it is all new for me. I arrived in El Salvador almost 3 weeks ago now and so am feeling increasingly settled both in the country and at school. However, I have an awful lot to learn this year so I do hope you will be patient with me; it is certain that, despite my best efforts, I will at some point make mistakes or omissions. I have experienced nothing but warmth, friendliness, and encouragement so far for which I am very grateful, so I am sure I can count on your understanding and support.
I have become a great advocate of growth mindset over the course of the past few years. It has informed my approach to school leadership but also, I must say, my approach to parenting. If you are interested, there is a wealth of research and information on the internet. Perhaps start with https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/ Throughout the year ahead, I will be encouraging teachers and students to have a growth mindset: to recognise mistakes as opportunities to learn; to focus on their attitude to their work rather than the outcome; to be willing to take risks in the knowledge that there is no such thing as failure if we give every opportunity our best effort. It would be great if you were able to supplement our work on this at school by taking a similar approach at home. Try starting by banning any sentences that begin with “I can’t….”- I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by the results!

¡Feliz fin de semana!

Words from the Head of Primary

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school! We hope your children are excited about the new school year. I am sure they will be very happy to be in school, getting to know their new teacher and enjoying being back with their friends and making new ones.

Our new staff members have settled well and are ready to start a new school year. We are pleased to introduce Ms. Emily Gordon and Ms. Anisa Muflahi-Isley. Both will be teaching in Prepa. We are sure both of them will make a positive contribution to our school and community. The maintenance staff has been busy ensuring our learning environment is safe, clean and fit for our students.

We welcome our new families to the ABC school community. Please look out for parent meeting dates to give you some insight into how the school works, including important policies and procedures. These meetings are designed for parents to support their child/children to settle in and become acquainted with our school.

I wish you a fantastic new year. We are all looking forward to meeting our students and parents.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

It is my pleasure to wish you all a warm welcome back to school! Staff are busy this week preparing and getting ready to have our students back on campus with their enthusiasm and energy next week! I speak on behalf of all our staff when I say we are all looking forward to another great year in Secondary School at the ABC! !Bienvenidos!

I start this message with a warm welcome and thank all our staff. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication; please know that you are valued and greatly appreciated.

This year we are joined by the following teachers: firstly our new Director, Mr. Stephen Lang who will also teach in the English department. Ms. Claire Fenlon and Ms. Mia Franzen also join the English department. Mr. Jeremy Muflahi- Isley is our new Head of Maths department. Mr. Matthew Systma joins our Humanities department as History teacher. Ms. Helen Kinder joins our PAD department as Music teacher. The Science department welcomes Mr. Robert Mobey and Florence Priya Alexander in Chemistry, Ms. Sally Gower Fox in Biology and Rafia Ali in Physics and last but not least, the Spanish department welcomes Víctor González. We also welcome Alejandra Martinez in our University Counselling department and Paola Escapini in Maths. I know they will find in ABC students and families a source of support.

This year the ABC starts its new Strategic Plan, which has been shared with the community and will continue to be the focus of the whole school improvement plan. We continue to be committed to making every child feel welcome, safe and help them on their journey to discover and develop their talents and find their purpose. It is our Vision to “Develop Responsible Outstanding Citizens” and our mission is to work in partnership with our parents to ensure our students receive a high-quality, values-based education in a safe and nurturing environment which develops their full potential.
The ABC is a community based school and we must all do what we can to help support our students by communicating openly and respectfully with each other: parents, staff and students. I am a firm believer that it is important to have a good understanding of our student and parent body in order to enable the school to meet their needs and vice versa.

We have an open door policy which means that your voice and opinion matters. We encourage you to contact us using the established channels of communication should you have a concern or question or just want to share information with us. As a matter of courtesy and to allow for our staff workload, we ask that you allow 48 hours in order to receive a response to emails sent as well as to understand that in order to meet with staff during the school day, a scheduled appointment, via our office staff, is needed. Thank you in advance for your understanding that we will not be able to see you without prior appointments due to schedules.

As you know, education is a shared responsibility between the home, student, school and community. We believe in Teamwork and this requires a shared commitment to work together to help our children have a successful year. Please read all of the information in this message to see how parents can help at home, as well as how students can make sure they rise to the school’s expectations of them. I ask you to read all the information carefully so we are all clear regarding the school’s expectations and regulations. In particular we would like to ask you to prioritise punctuality and attendance to school as well as help your child observe our uniform policy, which has been emailed to parents. We are expecting no less than a 95% attendance to the school and please be advised you will be invited in to meet with us should your child’s attendance not meet this expectation.

We have scheduled sessions of information for parents throughout the year, such as Parent- Teacher meetings, Learning Review Days, Know Your School, Parent Partnership events, etc. Please read our ‘Weekly’ publication as well as keep a close eye on the School calendar on the website. All events and activities for parents are published there and you will be able to keep abreast of important information. In particular, we ask that you observe our published holiday times so our students do not lose out on their right to education by missing school days for family trips or other commitments which we ask that you schedule outside of school time, such as doctor appointments, etc. A very important source of information is also your Head of Year. They will keep you informed of events to do with your child’s year group.

We look forward to seeing you and your child at their “Know Your School” morning sessions. These will take place at 7.00am in the PAC and will start promptly. Please make a point of scheduling these into your personal calendars and ensure you attend. Studies demonstrate that parental support and involvement is a key factor in children’s academic and personal success.
