Words from the Director

Last Friday we celebrated Peace One Day (P1D) with millions of other young people around the world. A day when we think about peace in our lives and doing all we can to reduce conflict wherever it occurs. This year we joined together with our neighbours the Lycee Francais to celebrate P1D. We visited each other’s campus to share messages of peace. I want to especially thank the StuCo leadership team including the President and Vice President, Sebastian Aviles and Michelle Kawas for their contributions to making this event such a success. We have more information on the newsblog entry.

We are entering the time of year when we promote our ABC value of being a global citizen under our slogan “think globally and act locally”. We will have more information on this next week including plans for recycling plastic and the Save the Children Colour Run which is coming up before half term.

Can I please remind you about safety in the morning and afternoon in our car parks. Please do not speed and never use a mobile phone when you are driving on our campus.

Our yearly coffee with the Director and Chair of the Board is coming up and will take place on Tuesday 2nd October at 7:00 am in the PAC. This is an excellent chance to come along if you have anything that you would like to ask or discuss. Please remember that specific cases won’t be approached at this time.

Finally I would like to add some reminders about the cafeteria. Please remember orders for food are only taken until 9:00 a.m. each day and through email only. If you order late, the cafeteria will try their best but cannot guarantee food will be available. The cafeteria has established the following hours for parents who have questions, would like to top up their accounts, etc. Monday through Friday: 5:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a great weekend with your children. Don’t forget Children’s Day on Monday!!

ABC Sports

We have had an inspiring visit from Joe Terrasi of the Positive Coaching Alliance this week. He has helped motivate our athletes, coaches and parents in line with our sports philosophy. Thank you to all the parents who attended the meeting with Joe this week. We are really pleased with the positive attitude being displayed by our athletes at the start of this year.

We saw inspirational support and effort as an ABC community this week in the basketball game between our boys Varsity and Colegio Santa Cecilia. Our team were inspired by the secondary school coming to support the game and the players superbly, winning the game, Well done Bulldogs, that is the spirit!

This week the U14 Football boys achieved 2nd place at the Juegos Estudiantiles, they played a brilliant game at the Finals but were defeated 2 - 1. We are very proud of their Team effort. Also the U12 Futsala boys got 3rd place at Juegos Estudiantiles

Important dates
October 3rd, BKB National Finals, ABC Mini BKB boys
October 2nd, Bilingual Football League starts and BKB continues

Words from the Head of Primary

It is hard to believe we are at the end of September already. I can see Teachers and children really enjoying their learning and the sense of achievement it brings. As I walk around the Primary classrooms I see engaged students who are trying their best, and teachers helping them to succeed.

Fun Fact: Children spend approximately 14% of their lives awake and at school. Therefore the other 86% of the year is spent sleeping, eating or with family and friends!!

Independence Assembly
Today Primary closed the civic month with a very special Independence Day Assembly. Children celebrated by singing the national anthem and repeating the pledge to the flag. We will be sharing pictures with you next week.

McLay Fun Run
The McLay Fun Run for our 5th grade students took place today at the Bicentenario Park. Pre-K to 4th grade students will participate in this event on Friday 5th October, here at the ABC. I’m sure all students will try their best and make this a successful event again this year.

As in previous years, all Primary students are asked to bring in a dollar, which will be used to buy sports equipment for a local school so we can spread the joy of participating in sport.

International Fair Raffle
This year the International Fair will take place on Saturday 20th October. All students are expected to attend to support their classes and to enjoy the entertainment and the refreshments. This event is supporting our curriculum and giving students a chance to practise their entrepreneurial skills. Please help your child to sell all their raffle tickets. There is a prize for the class that sells the most. Please make sure all Upper Primary children have brought in a filled jar for the tombola. Once again, thank you for your support.

Kinder Gonzalez has started a project with cardboard boxes and loose parts. Although this started a few weeks ago, the interest continues to grow and now the boxes have become pirate ships, spaceships and robots.

Children’s Day
The Primary Section will have a very special day this Monday 1st October, when they will be celebrating Children’s Day. Upper Primary and Lower Primary will receive some pleasant surprises. If you haven’t sent in a card yet for your Lower Primary child, then please contact the class teacher and send it on Monday.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

We have had a great week in Secondary school with our third annual visit of Joe Terrasi from the Positive Coaching Alliance. It was a fantastic continuation of our conversations on motivation for our students after Action Jackson and it has been amazing to hear comments from students regarding how these messages of hard work, perseverance and growth mindset have inspired them to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals. Thank you to the parents who attended the Parent Partnership with Mr Tarasi on Wednesday; it was a great opportunity to explore the challenges parents and athletes face and how best to work together and support each other.

Colour Run 2018 - Save the Children!
Our Prefect team ran the morning assemblies this week to continue raising awareness of the importance for children to be activists for children and to join forces with other children and be change makers in the world!

Please support our Colour run and encourage your child to buy the T-shirt and participate in the Colour run on October 26th.

EXABRIT Francisco Mejía - class of 2015
From Mrs Serrano
Standard Security Technology Talk (SSL)
Frank Mejía - Class of 2015 visited our Grade 10 Computer Science class. He is currently studying Computer Science at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. During his career, he has to do 6 internships of 4 months each. His last internship took place in Shopify, a company that provides a platform for e-commerce websites. His job was to optimise load balancing algorithms that run in the edge network infrastructure of the company. He and his team had to write a program that was able to efficiently search among 500,000 websites and determine which SSL certificates (the ones who authenticate a website as a trusted site) were about to expire or have expired in order to renew the certificate automatically through the Certificate Authorities. As part of their IGCSE Computer Science, Grade 10 students have been learning about Security protocols. Frank gladly accepted my invitation to come and share his knowledge and experience with the kids. He has even written a post about his experience at this company, Shopify. It's nice to hear from our ex-students experiences. We hope to see him once again soon.

Opportunities for education visits
From Mr Hall Deputy Head in charge of Curriculum
As an IB school, and in line with our ‘Global’ value which promotes international-mindedness, the school has this week announced two new secondary trips. Both offer a tremendous opportunity for our students to develop their academic and cultural knowledge and understanding, as well as develop their skills of leadership, teamwork and independence.

The first opportunity is in February to the National High School Model United Nations Conference, which is being held at the UN headquarters in New York City during the February half term. This trip is only open to members of the MUN/Hacia Democracy club at the school. It is primarily aimed at students in Grade 9 and above, though younger students are able to join the trip. It is the largest MUN conference in the world, involving more than 5,000 students from over 75 countries. We will be the first attendees from El Salvador. Information about the trip and details of the parents information meeting can be found in this letter. Preparation for the MUN conference will require a great deal of commitment and hard work from the students involved both before and during the trip. Students who sign up for the trip must demonstrate a commitment to attending the MUN/Hacia after school club and work hard to prepare fully for the conference.

The second trip is a repeat of the very successful Science and History trip to Washington DC that ran last June. In their end of year surveys, students were extremely positive about the trip. Highlights included a workshop on ‘Fake News’ at the Newseum, a simulation of the Cuban Missile Crisis at the International Spy Museum, a workshop on photosynthesis at the National Botanical Gardens and guided tours of the White House and Congress. Students were also able to visit the new Museum of African American History and Culture, the National zoo, the Holocaust Museum and the Museum of Natural History. This year’s trip will again be open to students in Grade 8 only and will largely follow the same itinerary, though there may be some changes in response to workshop availability. You can find the trip details in this letter, along with details of the parents meeting.

We are so fortunate to have such an incredible team of professionals in the LRC team, all who, under the leadership of Mrs Jenny García, truly make a difference not only in the lives of our students and staff but also in their visionary outreach projects. Below you can read about one of their latest activities.

Continued Community Outreach
From Mrs Jenny García and the LRC librarians
Over the years, it has become commonplace to see hosted groups of administrators, teachers and librarians as well as students of these disciplines touring the LRC. Using technology, we have been able to further expand these tours and engage in discussions and shared practices as far away as Malaysia and up and down the Americas. These are always meaningful, reciprocal learning experiences for everyone involved. We look forward to them and always come away with that greater sense of community and the satisfaction that accompanies the sharing of ideas and practices with like minded educators.

The LRC staff members were recently invited to participate in a video conference with students at the University of Costa Rica enrolled in the BI-5017 Marketing of Services and Products for Educational Information course along with their professor Daniela Rodríguez. The purpose of this virtual meetup was to address questions the students had on the specific challenges faced by libraries in different countries.

On September 13th, we hosted the class of student librarians via Google Hangouts. During this time we examined the challenges facing libraries, talked about marketing strategies and gave them a tour of the LRC facilities.

We ran this virtual session via Google Hangouts as it allowed us to go mobile on our various cell phones and a laptop. This technique worked really well as we were all able to not only converse with the group but also tour them around the facilities and in doing so pop in and out of the conversation as it developed.

We spent an hour and a half with this class, during this time we also shared ideas for the development of learning resources centres, special projects, and purchasing ideas for equipment and resource. We shared the way we organised our print library as well as the virtual library and its functions and finished up with a complete tour of the facilities. The beauty of this type of meetup is natural flow of conversation punctuated by concrete examples and poignant Q and A.

The professor in charge wrote to us the following day to thank us for coming into her classroom the evening before and working with her students. We in turn were thankful for the opportunity to do so. There is so much scope for work like this. It costs next to nothing to beam a group in via the internet and collaborate. We do it with our students in lessons, why shouldn't we collaborate through web conferences with professionals at other institutions as well. All it takes is a few people who are not afraid of taking a risk and are willing to use the technology most of us carry around with us on a daily basis.

Possibly the most powerful aspects of videoconferencing between institutions and countries are the conversations that result and the links that are forged. Through this activity we were not only able share our spaces, but to discuss matter of concern for libraries and librarians everywhere. We would be thrilled to hold more of these virtual meetups in future. We'll keep the updates coming.

ReciLectura Club
To celebrate El Salvador’s Independence month, the students in the ReciLectura Club prepared themselves for several weeks. On Wednesday September 26th, they visited Complejo educativo Walter A. Soundy, and shared common Salvadorean legends such as ‘el Cipitío’ and ‘el cadejo’.

They also enjoyed playing with ‘capiruchos, yoyos’, and sack racing which are some traditional children’s games.

Below you can read what a girl from the Club wrote once the activity was over:

"A lot of small people, in small places doing small things that can change the world”.

The experience of reading stories and taking doughnuts, and seeing the children happy is unique and very special. Just by looking at how happy a child can be when you read him a story, and being able to provide him with a unique moment is something very rewarding because it makes you grow as a person, it humbles you and helps you be more caring with other people. We as a group went to the school to read legends, and we took some doughnuts. It seems like a small action, but it was something huge because it brought a change to the lives of these children, because they smiled and received affection from out ReciLectura Club.

Grade 9 empowerment was a huge success! Thank you to the LSU team and the Grade 9 Head of Year, Mr Duncan and his tutor team for running it as well as to the Madres Enlace who looked after them with food and beverages. More from this great day next week!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón

Words from the Director

I would like to begin by wishing you all a happy Peace One Day which we have been celebrating this year with the Liceo Frances our neighbours. Peace One Day helps our children understand that peace is about friendship and care and that we can all help make our world more peaceful. I hope you all have a very peaceful weekend! Our weekend begins with football, volleyball and duathlon events tonight to celebrate the new lights we have installed on our field. I am hoping to see many of you there.

We are already preparing for the arrival of the Class of 2034 in August 2019. If you are parents of a 2-3 year old we would like to invite you to an Open Morning on Saturday 13th October with your son or daughter in our new state of the art classrooms. We have a personal, child centred approach which is supported by international research and best practice as the best introduction to learning and education. I look forward to seeing you there! Please do reserve your place for the morning.

We have just completed our CIS Self Study which is being submitted this week and we will be welcoming a team of educators in the last week of November for our accreditation visit. We have been finalising our Annual Improvement Plan for this school year and it is now published on this link to the Parents web page. We are looking forward to a very exciting year including the recruitment of a new Director which is taking place at the start of November.

ABC Sports

We are celebrating our new lighting this evening with our first FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS at school. We are looking forward to this being the first of many evenings when parents and the community will be welcomed at school to watch our children play sport.

We are welcoming a representative of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), Joe Terrasi, from Chicago who will be in school next week working with our coaches, staff and children. On Tuesday 25th September at 6 pm he is holding a parent - athlete workshop for Primary children (and their parents) participating and on Wednesday 26th September he is holding a parent - athlete workshop for Secondary which will start at 5.30 pm immediately after the sports practice. We hope many of you will be able to come along and find out more about supporting student athletes.

Important dates
September 21st - PEACE ONE DAY and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT. Duatlon, Football and Volleyball
September 28th - Last day to order Sports uniforms
Tuesday 25 September - Meeting for all Primary after school sports team children with parents in the PAC at 6 pm for meeting with Joe Terrasi (Positive Coaching Alliance).
Wednesday 26 September - Meeting for all Secondary after school sports team children with parents in the PAC at 5.30 pm for meeting with Joe Terrasi (Positive Coaching Alliance).

Words from the Head of Primary

I hope you all managed to have a relaxing long weekend. One of the most important things parents can do with their children is to spend quality time with them. Children learn so much from their parents as you are their first teacher! So to spend time with them is incredibly valuable as it helps them speak and listen, instill values, know right from wrong and learning the many skills of life- fine motor skills, relationships, curiosity, boundaries, interests, creativity, physical strength, etc.

In terms of being involved in the lives of your children I would like to remind you that on

Tuesday next week there is a meeting for all Primary after school sports team children with parents in the PAC at 6 pm for meeting with Joe Terrasi of the Positive Coaching Alliance. If your child is involved in after school sports we hope you will be there to hear more about supporting student athletes from an expert in this area.

Last Friday the Primary staff focussed on Mathematics and how we can make it fun, challenging and engaging. We also looked at ways to make the learning authentic- that is it gives children a link between what they are learning in the classroom and what is happening in their lives. The session was about the teachers being active learners, having fun and learning about engaging their students. The feedback from teachers was very positive and we hope this enthusiasm will lead to more active learning.

4th Guzman’s Assembly was about the Brain. Children went inside someone’s head where they met the brain and many neurons. They explained how the brain works. We learned about the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem and the very important nervous system. They also gave the audience valuable advice on how to keep the brain healthy.

3rd Navas had a very interesting week this week, they have been exploring the brain and even had the opportunity to see and touch a real brain from a cow. Believe it or not, they were thrilled.

Look at these three superheroes from Prepa Kennedy. Mr Bridge was very pleased when he found out they were in the football field picking up plastics. Im sure we can all follow their example and try to keep our school clean and tidy. Good Job!!

Friday 21st - First Henriquez Assembly
On Friday 21st celebrate Peace One Day. All children in Upper Primary were encouraged to wear white, the colour of peace. In our assembly children were reminded that 192 member states of the United Nations adopted 21st September as an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. But this is also a day about non-violence at home, communities and schools.

Our International Friendship Fair is coming soon on Saturday, October 20th. Please remember this is an academic and mandatory event. A letter has gone out to Upper Primary parents requesting filled jars. Please help your children to make them and ensure they come in as soon as possible. We have had very beautiful ones in past years. We appreciate your support and so thank you in advance.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

A short week albeit a busy one as always with many exciting learning opportunities.

Today we celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace in recognition of the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote Peace. This day is also a day of ceasefire, political or personal! In Secondary we have been encouraging students to reflect upon how this translates to their everyday lives. For example, making amends with someone, being kind to others who not necessarily are in their friendship groups, not being a bystander if they see someone in a difficult position. We hope you can continue these conversations at home and further promote peace in our world.

You can see photographs of the assembly here.

This week our Prefect Team attended a workshop with the representatives of Save The Children in El Salvador. As you know, every year our “Colour Run” is in support of this worthy organisation. This workshop highlighted the plight of immigrants and refugees around the world and gave our students an opportunity to consider how they can be change makers in the world “Thinking Globally and Acting Locally.” This year we are going one step further as the Prefect Team will run an empowerment team building day with 45 students from Nahuizalco. We are sure this will be an enriching experience for all involved.

We are looking forward to welcoming to school the Positive Coaching Alliance representative, Jo Terrasi, as you read in the Director’s message. Please to join us on Wednesday 26th September, at the Parent- Athlete workshop for Secondary. This will start at 5.30pm, straight after sports practice.

Words from the Director

We have had a very interesting week leading up to the Independence Day break. We have had some excellent assemblies and reflection on the idea of independence as it impacts on young people. We have also been reflecting on our pride in our country’s achievements as an independent nation. I would like to wish you all a good Independence Day on Saturday and through the long weekend. School reopens on Tuesday.

Action Jackson has had a big impact on our community this week with his positive message based around our values, vision and mission. I know he has inspired many students and it was amazing to see four hundred people at the evening event. We are going to continue working with Jackson and Ayo over the coming months to help our students realise their dreams as they approach their exams.

Please note Friday 21 of September in your diaries. We have a community event to celebrate the inauguration of our the new lights on our field. We will be having football and volleyball, food and soft drinks as well as tours of our new science laboratories. The event starts at 5.30 pm.

ABC Sports

We have had another very busy week with record numbers of children practicing after school. We have had a number of fixtures and our teams have performed with pride. A big shout out to our Varsity boys team who started their season with an excellent 7-1 victory over Colegio Josue. There is a long way to go to consistently achieve excellent results but we know that with our new practice guidelines and commitment that we will see the benefits. This term we will be focusing on fitness and preparations for the bilingual league tournament and finishing the Juegos Estudiantiles 2018. After the Christmas break we will be participating in College Cup tournaments provided we are happy with the safety and emotional environments especially for younger students. We need your cooperation and support about decisions regarding participation in events not organised directly through school.
We would like to see our ABC community supporting our students on sports activities, in response we are offering a special T-shirt designed for the “ABC barra” You might order it at the School shop in the coming two weeks, the same period to order the Sports uniforms that goes from September 10th to September 28th, details have been sent home through email and letters.

Words from the Head of Primary

Today, school was closed for students and it will also closed on Monday to celebrate El Salvador’s Independence. Today was an important time for the teachers assistance as we spend this day developing and growing to ensure your children are receiving quality learning. In Primary we have 3 focuses- 1. Preparing for the CIS visit in November; 2. Improving our Maths programmes and; 3. Ensuring all staff undertake First Aid training.

Could parents ordering meals from the cafeteria please talk to your child first before ordering so the choice of food is something they like. Also, please inform your child that a lunch has been ordered as students are not coming to the cafeteria because they do not know a lunch has been ordered for them. Time, money and food is being wasted, so your cooperation in this matter would be appreciated.

This week Pre-kinder Francés has turned into a Cookie Factory. Children have been preparing cookies made of playdough and decorated them with colourful beads. They have enjoyed using their imagination and fine motor skills and are now ready to start baking their creations. But the story doesn't end there, they even sell their cookies!.

On Thursday our 5th grade students went on a trip to Parque Arqueológico San Andrés and Joya de Ceren as part of their Entry Point to the topic “AD 900”. Children were introduced to the Mayas and their culture: history, ideas, beliefs, religion.

On Wednesday it was 5th Caceres’ turn to present their Assembly, which was about El Salvador’s Independence Day. We thank Mrs Caceres and her team for preparing this assembly and congratulate the children for their great performance.

Yesterday we participated in the Independence Fair organized by the Secondary Section selling pupusas to support Fairs to Educate- our school charity. The Fairs to Educate Committee would like to thank all the children, parents and staff who supported this activity.

We will be celebrating Peace One Day next Friday 21st September. Please join in the celebrations. On this date we commemorate the occasion when all members of the United Nations unanimously adopted the first annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence.

This year the McLay Fun Run for 5th grade will take place again at Parque Bicentenario. On Friday 28th September children and their teachers will all leave in buses at 7.30am. The PE Department has planned several activities at the park. Children must bring a $1.00 to use the trails.

Children from Pre-kinder to 4th grade will take part in the McLay Fun Run on Friday 5th October here at school. This promises to be a morning filled with fun and challenging activities.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

Action Jackson
I AM AMAZING!
This was what kept being repeated to our students this past week as we hosted motivational speakers Action Jackson and his colleague Ayo. Their inspirational message of self confidence, growth mindset and positivism we know are tools which will enable our students to develop a successful mindset and leadership skills. It was incredible to see how our students responded to them and welcomed them into their life. Their sessions were filled with positive energy making students feel that our School’s motto “Effort leads to success” is true more than ever and it is attainable through time, effort and focus.

Some takeaways I will certainly remember and will remind students of:

“I am amazing, I will stay in my lane, I won’t give up!”

“My thoughts affect my feelings which in turn define my actions and affect my success.”

“The process a diamond goes through is different to the process plastic goes through. Your choice- want to be plastic or diamond? A diamond goes through pressure! But it is worth it.”

“What is your big WHY?”

We also held a session for our teachers where we were reminded that leaders “Know the way, Show the way and go the way.” Our visit ended with our Parent Partnership event where the team worked with our connection between parents and children and highlighted the importance of not comparing our children to anyone else and honouring their individual talents and streghts and above all, to love them AND challenge them and not over protect them in order for them to be able to fly in the world.

If you missed the Parent Partnership session, you can access the live stream here https://livestream.com/accounts/19223434

A huge thank you to Mr Alvin Silva, Ms Estela Mena, Mr Reebe Mayer and Mr Paul Valladares for putting on a beautiful and inspiring assembly to mark El Salvador’s Independence Day.

A special thank you to our Director, Mr Keslake, who reminded us of many reasons why we ought to be proud of our heritage. Among them, being the first country in the region to allow the vote for women, to abolish slavery and to join the United Nations. Our community was reminded that it is really a great privilege to belong to small country in size but immense in potential, culture and beauty.

You can see some of the assembly highlights on this link: https://goo.gl/XxkzhL

I hope you have a wonderful long weekend with your family. See you bright and early next Tuesday 18th of September!

¡Feliz Día de la Independencia Patria!

Words from the Director

We have completed our formal welcome back to school events this week and thank you to so many parents who attended. If for some reason you were unable to attend please contact school through your child’s teacher, Grade Leader or Head of Year to catch up. I know some of you are very busy but we do feel it is very important that we meet together to ensure we are working together. Equally the parent meetings planned during the year are also vital so we can continue to discuss progress and motivation.

I would also like to thank parents who attended the CIS Self Study review meetings this week. The last CIS parent meeting is on Monday at 7am for the Secondary curriculum, teaching and learning meeting. Please do come along and help if you have time. The CIS team visit will be here at school at the end of November for our reaccreditation visit.

We are currently focusing on our ABC value of being independent. It includes standing up for what we know is right and not being influenced unduly by the opinions of others. I have been looking for examples of children being independent this week and have seen many examples. One young boy told me that being independent was important because El Salvador was independent and he was proud of his country. I thought the link that he made was really nice because we want children, like countries, to stand up for themselves but we also need them to be responsible, be ethical and cooperate with each other. In this sense our country’s independence next week is important for our children. They also need us to celebrate and be optimistic about our future both as an independent country and independent people. School is closed next Friday 14 and Monday 17 September to celebrate Independence Day.

We have a visitor from the UK next week to work with our secondary students to help with their motivation and learning good study skills in a fun way. I am sure he will be very helpful. He is running a session for parents next Thursday to which you are invited. Details are on the school calendar and the flyer sent by Anabella Soto earlier this week. I hope to see you there.

We are planning football, food and a tour of the new science laboratories on Friday 21 September from 5.30 to 9.00 pm under our new floodlights! We will be sending more details soon but please make a note in your diaries.

Finally, we would like to congratulate our top IGCSE students from the Class of 2020, they are true examples of Effort leading to Success and we know their performance during IB will be just as outstanding.

Congratulations to our top IGCSE student, Marcelo Moreno, as well as Rebeca Cruz, Julia Espinal, Ariana Rodríguez, Airi Shibata and Carlos Vásquez (not pictured).

ABC Sports

It has been an excellent week of sports with record numbers of children practicing. Our younger children are practicing between 12.30 and 3.30 and our older children between 3.30 and 5 pm. These arrangements help ensure we have space for all children. Our secondary children have extracurricular options between 2 and 3 as well as space to do homework, we encourage them to be responsible competitors and students using their time wisely.

We are particularly pleased to see how many girls are participating, football, basketball and volleyball sessions have been full! We will continue encouraging girls to participate, we expect the same from parents.

Last Friday August 31st the ABC Archery team did an excellent job at the Juegos Estudiantiles 2018, the results were the following:

Pre- infantil Category
Jeannette Marie Mejia: 2 gold medals at classificatory and Olympic round.

Infantil Category
Armando Alfaro Duch: 2 gold medals at classificatory and Olympic round.
Jesus Eduardo Castro León: 2 Silver medals at classificatory and Olympic round.
Andres Santiago Hernández: 1 Bronze medal at classificatory round

Cadete Category
Brock Kaeden Tidwell: 1 Gold medal at classificatory round.
Andre Manuel Mejia: 1 Silver medal at classificatory round
Ana Cristina Hércules Jaen: 1 Silver medal at Olympic individual round.

Words from the Head of Primary

We are sorry for some of the issues that we have been having with the cafeteria ordering system, but it is becoming more organised and we are making more changes to improve it further. At the moment, children can only use cash to purchase snacks from the UP Playground shop. Children who only have the ID card, will go to the cafeteria for snacks.

Thank you for your feedback on issues such as the cafeteria or traffic. Your comments are very important as we reflect on how to make the school an even happier, safer environment.

One thing I have noticed is the amount of food being wasted by children who have had a lunch ordered for them. Food has been ordered, but sometimes your child does not like the food on the plate! Please talk to your child before ordering their food, so they get food they like. Students who bring lunch from home are welcome to buy snacks at either break or lunch.

The world we live in has a number of ways for us to communicate with each other...Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, etc. Many of you may have friends or relative who are also teachers at ABC. To ensure the safety and professionalism of our teachers, the school policy states that all official school communication will be via the school’s email system, which means staff currently can only respond to emails. This allows the school to maintain a record of all communication and that the messages between a teacher and a parent are strictly professional . Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

On Thursday 13th September, Secondary students are organising an Independence Day Lunch. On this day, an assortment of typical salvadorian foods including pupusas are sold to the Upper Primary and Secondary students. If you would like to pre-order pupusas for your child, please fill out the order form that will go out on Monday. All proceeds will go to the Fairs to Educate Fund. Thank you for your support.

This week 2nd Pineda have been learning to respect and acknowledge everybody’s creative ideas. They have been engaged in a range of interesting activities to illustrate these values.

1st Padilla’s Assembly this morning was called WHY DO WE ENJOY COMING TO SCHOOL?. Children did a great job expressing themselves, they all have very clear reasons why they enjoy their days in school. Parents were all very proud to see them performing on stage. Well done 1st Padilla.

On Tuesday we held our Welcome Back to School Nights for 4th and 5th grade and then on Thursday it was Prepa and First Grade’s turn. We thank all the parents who attended. It was a good opportunity for teachers to explain how the class is organized and to answer all of your questions.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

We have had a busy start to the term with our new dynamic of Know Your School mornings where parents had the opportunity to share with their children. Thank you to all the parents who attended. It really was wonderful to have you together and I hope this marks the manner we mean to go on: Parents, children and school working together.

Here are the presentations we used for these sessions.

In particular I would like to mention what a great experience it was to see Grade 12 parents and students working together at this session and the feedback we received from the student representatives was excellent. Mr Hogan will be sending feedback home to parents and we truly hope that the dialogue and communication stays very constant in this very important year ahead.

If there you have any questions regarding the year or would like to send some feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us!

We look forward to next week when Action Jackson will be working with our children in Grades 8 to 12. We also look forward to seeing all the parents on Thursday 13th at 6.00 pm in the PAC.
We look forward to next week’s Civic month celebrations with the culmination of our Independence Day assembly and Food fair next Thursday. Please support! Note that the school is closed for students next Friday as we have an INSET day for staff.

Words from the Director

I must begin by congratulating the Class of 2020 for Inoblitus last night and to wish them the best for this evening. We do really appreciate the Class of 2020 for organizing their Circus at this time of year. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen including of course, the Class 2020 parents.

In the summer examinations we had some amazing academic performances. Congratulations to Daniela Durán and Fernando Vega who were our top IB students with 42 points. Fernando is now studying at the University of Manchester in England and Daniela has a full scholarship in Texas.

It is also my pleasure to announce the top IGCSE student and our new Millennium Scholar. Marcelo Moreno achieved 8 A* and 2 A grades which makes him one of our top all time students. Congratulations to him, his family and teachers. A number of other students deserve mention for achieving excellent results. Congratulations to Rebecca Cruz, Julia Espinal, Ariana Rodriguez, Airi Shibata and Carlos Vasquez.

Thank you to those of you who have attended the CIS Self Study review meetings this week. We have more next week and we really do need your participation. The meetings are on the school calendar. In the Primary Section of this newsletter there is a reminder of departure times each day. Please do not arrive too early for these pick ups as we do not want our access routes blocked. Secondary children leave at 2 pm and only from the top car park until 2.10 pm. They may only go to the PAC car park before 2.20 pm if they have a sibling in the Primary School and they need to get a pass to allow them access to this car park. You can write to the Secondary Office for a pass. Otherwise from 2.20 pm all car parks are open to all students. Please be patient in the pick up areas, following the instructions of ABC staff and respect our speed limit as well as not using a mobile phone while driving.

I hope you have a lovely weekend with your children.

Cafeteria
We would like to remind you of the following:
  • Please note that the cafeteria will only be delivering food to Lower Primary students at 11.30am.
  • To order your child's lunch from the cafeteria, please do so by email only (cafeteria@abc-net.edu.sv) no later than 9:30 a.m. Please copy ('cc) in your child's class teacher when emailing food orders. This will allow staff to support children when necessary. Bear in mind that the Cafeteria does not take orders over the phone.
  • Cafeteria menus for the following week are attached to this documents every Friday evening.
  • The cafeteria does not offer credit. If your child has an account, you must make sure it has enough money for them to purchase what they need. You can also pre pay the meals.
  • If your child will be using a debit account, they must always have their student ID at the time of purchase. If the child does not have the card, it is not possible to complete the purchase unless they have cash.
  • The cafeteria accepts cash and credit card payments, and deposits can be made to the following bank accounts. The deposit slip must be then sent via email or physically to the Cafeteria to make sure they have a record of your payment.
  • Banco Agrícola, 00343-054976-3, María Elena Carballo Velásquez
  • Banco de América Central (Credomatic), 114172158, María Elena Carballo Velásquez
  • The small hut by the UP Circle will be open during lunch to offer snacks. They only accept cash but children will be able to pay with their ID in the near future.
ABC Sports

Starting this week we have send home the “ABC Sports Participants Contract” which enclose the commitments that every student-athlete should follow to become successful team players, please return it no later than September 14th.

It is amazing to see our Bulldogs giving their best on the field, but most at all to put values in practice. This week U16 Football boys and Varsity Football girls played against Instituto Nacional de Suchitoto. The Volleyball varsity girls beat Instituto Nacional de Suchitoto 3 sets to 1. Meanwhile U17 Football Boys lost 2 to 1 against Colegio Champagnat at the Colegiales Tournament.

On Friday 31st, our Archery team is competing defending the medals won last year. Next week U17 Football boys will play its last game at the Colegiales Tournament, we wish all of them the best!

Words from the Head of Primary

It is hard to believe we are at the end of our second week. Students and teachers have been working hard to develop positive relationships, routines and a learning culture within the classroom that fits with the ABCs Values and Curriculum.

It was great to see so many parents attend the Back to School meetings. This commitment from parents means we are ensuring a positive partnership between the home and the school. This relationship will contribute to your child’s success at the ABC because we put the child at the centre and they feel supported and are prepared to put in the effort! Effort leads to Success.

On Thursday 13th September, Secondary will organize the Independence Day Lunch. On this day, an assortment of typical salvadorian foods including pupusas are sold to Upper Primary and Secondary students. If you would like to pre-order pupusas for your child, please fill out the order form that will go out on Monday. All proceeds will go to the Fairs to Educate Fund. Thank you for your support.

Exit times are:
Pre-Kinder 12.15pm
Kinder 12.45pm
Prepa 1.15pm
First grade 1.35pm

Upper Primary 1.50pm

Please do not come and queue earlier than this time.

Your children should not be forgetting things (PE kit, homework, lunch etc) at home and expecting to have them delivered during the school day. It is their responsibility to make sure they have everything they need. In a real emergency, Sandra Acosta at the Front Desk, will accept school bags, lunch boxes or medication. She will have these items delivered to the classrooms. Other items will not be accepted.

This week in 1st Padilla children have been preparing their bucket fillers. Children are decorating their buckets which will later be filled with good manners and good actions. We hope these buckets are full shortly.

Remember school will be closed on Friday 14th and Monday 17th September.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

Very happy to wrap up the week with our class of 2020 Circus “Inoblitus” What a wonderful performance they had last night and I am very much looking forward to the one tonight. Two sold out performances! Seeing them in action, it was clear that our school values certainly have helped them in the creation of this wonderful performance! It was great to see our teachers supporting their Circus in the audience as well as on stage!

We look forward to welcoming them back into school on Monday 3rd of September, bright and early for their IB Induction days to start them off on their IB course. Best of luck!

Exabrit and founder of “Corazones Solidarios” visit Ana Sofía González- Class of 2017

It was phenomenal to see Ana Sofía González talking with our students this week on being a Youth Activist. She delivered a powerful message to our students starting by asking them “To be or not to be?” - she asked them if they wanted to act, or not to act; to help, or not to help, to do or to ignore.

She is a fantastic example of an ABC ROC and true model for our students. Among her many powerful lessons and experiences she calls to us to look around and notice! She encouraged our students to commit to something beyond themselves and make a difference in the world. She reminded students that our School Motto is what started her thinking of what she needed to ensure a successful outcome to her charity, and her own take has now become:

“Effort leads to success” but effort and commitment leads to prolonged success.

6th Grade LRC induction!
From Judith Mendez y Jennifer Garcia
Again, this year we held the 6th grade LRC induction, during which the LRC team welcomed the students. During the session, the students were shown all the resources the LRC has to offer in order to be able to provide a comprehensive service to its users, and enrich their learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. One of this year’s innovations is the wide variety of e-books, online magazines, and audiobooks available.

After this presentation, the students enjoyed a dynamic game of Kahoot, which is an online platform of interactive and personalized games. The game consists of answering questions in teams, related to the presentation given prior to the game using mobile devices and in this particular case, using iPads. It was a competition which motivated them to use a wide range of resources and to visit the LRC. They showed great interest and participation, and prepared in advance for the next sessions which will take place over the next weeks.

E-MAGAZINES are HERE!

Makerspace in action! LRC staff works with Colegio Highlands
From Mr Raúl Martínez- ICT Teacher
On August 29th, representatives from Colegio Highlands visited the makerspace in the LRC. This was a follow up to two previous visits in which they took part in tours and activities which focused on the Library, active learning through technology and makerspaces.

This year they have implemented for the first time the concept of makerspace in their school. The purpose of the visit was to gather a few ideas that have recently been developed by the LRC and ICT departments for both curricular and extracurricular learning.

NATIONAL BOOK CAMPAIGN- FEPADE
This year our school will once again support the 19th National Book Campaign organized by FEPADE, which seeks to create libraries and to promote reading in public schools of our country. If you wish to make a donation you will find boxes   outside the school’s libraries both in Upper Primary and in Secondary, inside which you can deposit new or old books in good condition. You can start donating books from September 3rd onwards.

Thank you for your support!

The French departament continues with the Project of PERSONALIZED MUSICAL PRODUCTION LESSONS
From: Monsieur David Navarro- Head of French Department
In order to encourage students to become musical producers and artists, the musical duet Shaka & Dres, are offering personalized lessons to youngsters and persons interested in learning how to produce their own songs.

It is important to say that they have decided to give exclusivity to the ABC, offering their lessons as an extracurricular activity to a group of 10 students who are truly interested in learning how to produce a song. You can see what was accomplished last year by visiting the following link: https://youtu.be/VUZU2Glsa9I
