Words from the Director

I must begin by congratulating the Class of 2020 for Inoblitus last night and to wish them the best for this evening. We do really appreciate the Class of 2020 for organizing their Circus at this time of year. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen including of course, the Class 2020 parents.

In the summer examinations we had some amazing academic performances. Congratulations to Daniela Durán and Fernando Vega who were our top IB students with 42 points. Fernando is now studying at the University of Manchester in England and Daniela has a full scholarship in Texas.

It is also my pleasure to announce the top IGCSE student and our new Millennium Scholar. Marcelo Moreno achieved 8 A* and 2 A grades which makes him one of our top all time students. Congratulations to him, his family and teachers. A number of other students deserve mention for achieving excellent results. Congratulations to Rebecca Cruz, Julia Espinal, Ariana Rodriguez, Airi Shibata and Carlos Vasquez.

Thank you to those of you who have attended the CIS Self Study review meetings this week. We have more next week and we really do need your participation. The meetings are on the school calendar. Each meeting will be from 7 to 8 am each morning on the following dates. If you would like to attend please register your interest by clicking on the link beside each domain. In the Primary Section of this newsletter there is a reminder of departure times each day. Please do not arrive too early for these pick ups as we do not want our access routes blocked. Secondary children leave at 2 pm and only from the top car park until 2.10 pm. They may only go to the PAC car park before 2.20 pm if they have a sibling in the Primary School and they need to get a pass to allow them access to this car park. You can write to the Secondary Office for a pass. Otherwise from 2.20 pm all car parks are open to all students. Please be patient in the pick up areas, following the instructions of ABC staff and respect our speed limit as well as not using a mobile phone while driving.

I hope you have a lovely weekend with your children.

Cafeteria
We would like to remind you of the following:
  • Please note that the cafeteria will only be delivering food to Lower Primary students at 11.30am.
  • To order your child's lunch from the cafeteria, please do so by email only (cafeteria@abc-net.edu.sv) no later than 9:30 a.m. Please copy ('cc) in your child's class teacher when emailing food orders. This will allow staff to support children when necessary. Bear in mind that the Cafeteria does not take orders over the phone.
  • Cafeteria menus for the following week are attached to this documents every Friday evening.
  • The cafeteria does not offer credit. If your child has an account, you must make sure it has enough money for them to purchase what they need. You can also pre pay the meals.
  • If your child will be using a debit account, they must always have their student ID at the time of purchase. If the child does not have the card, it is not possible to complete the purchase unless they have cash.
  • The cafeteria accepts cash and credit card payments, and deposits can be made to the following bank accounts. The deposit slip must be then sent via email or physically to the Cafeteria to make sure they have a record of your payment.
  • Banco Agrícola, 00343-054976-3, María Elena Carballo Velásquez
  • Banco de América Central (Credomatic), 114172158, María Elena Carballo Velásquez
  • The small hut by the UP Circle will be open during lunch to offer snacks. They only accept cash but children will be able to pay with their ID in the near future.
ABC Sports

Starting this week we have send home the “ABC Sports Participants Contract” which enclose the commitments that every student-athlete should follow to become successful team players, please return it no later than September 14th.

It is amazing to see our Bulldogs giving their best on the field, but most at all to put values in practice. This week U16 Football boys and Varsity Football girls played against Instituto Nacional de Suchitoto. The Volleyball varsity girls beat Instituto Nacional de Suchitoto 3 sets to 1. Meanwhile U17 Football Boys lost 2 to 1 against Colegio Champagnat at the Colegiales Tournament.

On Friday 31st, our Archery team is competing defending the medals won last year. Next week U17 Football boys will play its last game at the Colegiales Tournament, we wish all of them the best!

Words from the Head of Primary

It is hard to believe we are at the end of our second week. Students and teachers have been working hard to develop positive relationships, routines and a learning culture within the classroom that fits with the ABCs Values and Curriculum.

It was great to see so many parents attend the Back to School meetings. This commitment from parents means we are ensuring a positive partnership between the home and the school. This relationship will contribute to your child’s success at the ABC because we put the child at the centre and they feel supported and are prepared to put in the effort! Effort leads to Success.

On Thursday 13th September, Secondary will organize the Independence Day Lunch. On this day, an assortment of typical salvadorian foods including pupusas are sold to Upper Primary and Secondary students. If you would like to pre-order pupusas for your child, please fill out the order form that will go out on Monday. All proceeds will go to the Fairs to Educate Fund. Thank you for your support.

Exit times are:
Pre-Kinder 12.15pm
Kinder 12.45pm
Prepa 1.15pm
First grade 1.35pm

Upper Primary 1.50pm

Please do not come and queue earlier than this time.

Your children should not be forgetting things (PE kit, homework, lunch etc) at home and expecting to have them delivered during the school day. It is their responsibility to make sure they have everything they need. In a real emergency, Sandra Acosta at the Front Desk, will accept school bags, lunch boxes or medication. She will have these items delivered to the classrooms. Other items will not be accepted.

This week in 1st Padilla children have been preparing their bucket fillers. Children are decorating their buckets which will later be filled with good manners and good actions. We hope these buckets are full shortly.

Remember school will be closed on Friday 14th and Monday 17th September.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

Very happy to wrap up the week with our class of 2020 Circus “Inoblitus” What a wonderful performance they had last night and I am very much looking forward to the one tonight. Two sold out performances! Seeing them in action, it was clear that our school values certainly have helped them in the creation of this wonderful performance! It was great to see our teachers supporting their Circus in the audience as well as on stage!

We look forward to welcoming them back into school on Monday 3rd of September, bright and early for their IB Induction days to start them off on their IB course. Best of luck!

Exabrit and founder of “Corazones Solidarios” visit Ana Sofía González- Class of 2017

It was phenomenal to see Ana Sofía González talking with our students this week on being a Youth Activist. She delivered a powerful message to our students starting by asking them “To be or not to be?” - she asked them if they wanted to act, or not to act; to help, or not to help, to do or to ignore.

She is a fantastic example of an ABC ROC and true model for our students. Among her many powerful lessons and experiences she calls to us to look around and notice! She encouraged our students to commit to something beyond themselves and make a difference in the world. She reminded students that our School Motto is what started her thinking of what she needed to ensure a successful outcome to her charity, and her own take has now become:

“Effort leads to success” but effort and commitment leads to prolonged success.

6th Grade LRC induction!
From Judith Mendez y Jennifer Garcia
Again, this year we held the 6th grade LRC induction, during which the LRC team welcomed the students. During the session, the students were shown all the resources the LRC has to offer in order to be able to provide a comprehensive service to its users, and enrich their learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. One of this year’s innovations is the wide variety of e-books, online magazines, and audiobooks available.

After this presentation, the students enjoyed a dynamic game of Kahoot, which is an online platform of interactive and personalized games. The game consists of answering questions in teams, related to the presentation given prior to the game using mobile devices and in this particular case, using iPads. It was a competition which motivated them to use a wide range of resources and to visit the LRC. They showed great interest and participation, and prepared in advance for the next sessions which will take place over the next weeks.

E-MAGAZINES are HERE!

Makerspace in action! LRC staff works with Colegio Highlands
From Mr Raúl Martínez- ICT Teacher
On August 29th, representatives from Colegio Highlands visited the makerspace in the LRC. This was a follow up to two previous visits in which they took part in tours and activities which focused on the Library, active learning through technology and makerspaces.

This year they have implemented for the first time the concept of makerspace in their school. The purpose of the visit was to gather a few ideas that have recently been developed by the LRC and ICT departments for both curricular and extracurricular learning.

NATIONAL BOOK CAMPAIGN- FEPADE
This year our school will once again support the 19th National Book Campaign organized by FEPADE, which seeks to create libraries and to promote reading in public schools of our country. If you wish to make a donation you will find boxes   outside the school’s libraries both in Upper Primary and in Secondary, inside which you can deposit new or old books in good condition. You can start donating books from September 3rd onwards.

Thank you for your support!

The French departament continues with the Project of PERSONALIZED MUSICAL PRODUCTION LESSONS
From: Monsieur David Navarro- Head of French Department
In order to encourage students to become musical producers and artists, the musical duet Shaka & Dres, are offering personalized lessons to youngsters and persons interested in learning how to produce their own songs.

It is important to say that they have decided to give exclusivity to the ABC, offering their lessons as an extracurricular activity to a group of 10 students who are truly interested in learning how to produce a song. You can see what was accomplished last year by visiting the following link: https://youtu.be/VUZU2Glsa9I
