Words from the Director

I would like to begin by wishing you all a happy Peace One Day which we have been celebrating this year with the Liceo Frances our neighbours. Peace One Day helps our children understand that peace is about friendship and care and that we can all help make our world more peaceful. I hope you all have a very peaceful weekend! Our weekend begins with football, volleyball and duathlon events tonight to celebrate the new lights we have installed on our field. I am hoping to see many of you there.

We are already preparing for the arrival of the Class of 2034 in August 2019. If you are parents of a 2-3 year old we would like to invite you to an Open Morning on Saturday 13th October with your son or daughter in our new state of the art classrooms. We have a personal, child centred approach which is supported by international research and best practice as the best introduction to learning and education. I look forward to seeing you there! Please do reserve your place for the morning.

We have just completed our CIS Self Study which is being submitted this week and we will be welcoming a team of educators in the last week of November for our accreditation visit. We have been finalising our Annual Improvement Plan for this school year and it is now published on this link to the Parents web page. We are looking forward to a very exciting year including the recruitment of a new Director which is taking place at the start of November.

ABC Sports

We are celebrating our new lighting this evening with our first FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS at school. We are looking forward to this being the first of many evenings when parents and the community will be welcomed at school to watch our children play sport.

On Tuesday 25th September at 6 pm he is holding a parent - athlete workshop for Primary children (and their parents) participating and on Wednesday 26th September he is holding a parent - athlete workshop for Secondary which will start at 5.30 pm immediately after the sports practice. We hope many of you will be able to come along and find out more about supporting student athletes.

Words from the Head of Primary

I hope you all managed to have a relaxing long weekend. One of the most important things parents can do with their children is to spend quality time with them. Children learn so much from their parents as you are their first teacher! So to spend time with them is incredibly valuable as it helps them speak and listen, instill values, know right from wrong and learning the many skills of life- fine motor skills, relationships, curiosity, boundaries, interests, creativity, physical strength, etc.

In terms of being involved in the lives of your children I would like to remind you that on

Tuesday next week there is a meeting for all Primary after school sports team children with parents in the PAC at 6 pm for meeting with Joe Terrasi of the Positive Coaching Alliance. If your child is involved in after school sports we hope you will be there to hear more about supporting student athletes from an expert in this area.

Last Friday the Primary staff focussed on Mathematics and how we can make it fun, challenging and engaging. We also looked at ways to make the learning authentic- that is it gives children a link between what they are learning in the classroom and what is happening in their lives. The session was about the teachers being active learners, having fun and learning about engaging their students. The feedback from teachers was very positive and we hope this enthusiasm will lead to more active learning.

4th Guzman’s Assembly was about the Brain. Children went inside someone’s head where they met the brain and many neurons. They explained how the brain works. We learned about the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem and the very important nervous system. They also gave the audience valuable advice on how to keep the brain healthy.

3rd Navas had a very interesting week this week, they have been exploring the brain and even had the opportunity to see and touch a real brain from a cow. Believe it or not, they were thrilled.

Look at these three superheroes from Prepa Kennedy. Mr Bridge was very pleased when he found out they were in the football field picking up plastics. Im sure we can all follow their example and try to keep our school clean and tidy. Good Job!!

Friday 21st - First Henriquez Assembly
On Friday 21st celebrate Peace One Day. All children in Upper Primary were encouraged to wear white, the colour of peace. In our assembly children were reminded that 192 member states of the United Nations adopted 21st September as an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. But this is also a day about non-violence at home, communities and schools.

Our International Friendship Fair is coming soon on Saturday, October 20th. Please remember this is an academic and mandatory event. A letter has gone out to Upper Primary parents requesting filled jars. Please help your children to make them and ensure they come in as soon as possible. We have had very beautiful ones in past years. We appreciate your support and so thank you in advance.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

A short week albeit a busy one as always with many exciting learning opportunities.

Today we celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace in recognition of the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote Peace. This day is also a day of ceasefire, political or personal! In Secondary we have been encouraging students to reflect upon how this translates to their everyday lives. For example, making amends with someone, being kind to others who not necessarily are in their friendship groups, not being a bystander if they see someone in a difficult position. We hope you can continue these conversations at home and further promote peace in our world.

You can see photographs of the assembly here.

This week our Prefect Team attended a workshop with the representatives of Save The Children in El Salvador. As you know, every year our “Colour Run” is in support of this worthy organisation. This workshop highlighted the plight of immigrants and refugees around the world and gave our students an opportunity to consider how they can be change makers in the world “Thinking Globally and Acting Locally.” This year we are going one step further as the Prefect Team will run an empowerment team building day with 45 students from Nahuizalco. We are sure this will be an enriching experience for all involved.

We are looking forward to welcoming to school the Positive Coaching Alliance representative, Jo Terrasi, as you read in the Director’s message. Please to join us on Wednesday 26th September, at the Parent- Athlete workshop for Secondary. This will start at 5.30pm, straight after sports practice.
