Words from the Director

We are working with Save the Children in El Salvador today to promote a range of UN Sustainable Development Goals through the “Colour Run”. I would like to thank our Head Students Clarissa and Marco for all the work they have put into this event and for their dedication to helping younger children in our country. We have to work together to help create communities in our country where young people can grow and learn. Clarissa and Marco are helping us make a major contribution to a local community by providing a space for secure and safe learning for young children.

Thankfully the recent rain has cleared and we have been able to resume our full sports programmes and resume some of our off site trips. I would like to take this opportunity to remind the community that we always do a risk assessment before any trip and we always ensure we have ABC staff fully supervising the trip. We do believe it is important that our children safely experience the world outside our campus with their peers and it is vital that we work together to provide those experiences. We also seek advice on the safety of the locations from independent advisers and our contacts in the community. We do ask that you allow your children to participate in these activities.

I do hope you enjoy your half term break with your children and look forward to seeing you on Monday 5th November.

We are looking at ways to improve our communication and we would be grateful if you would fill in this very brief survey regarding the ABC Weekly.

Message from the Chair of the Board

As you are aware we recently advertised the position of Director for August 2019. I am pleased to inform you that we had a good response and have recently completed our first round of formal interviews.

The next round will involve candidates traveling here in the week of November 5th so we can meet them in person. We are hoping to complete the selection process by the end of next month.

Words from the Head of Primary

It is hard to believe we are coming to the mid term break of Term One. As Head of Primary, I have been very impressed with our wonderful staff, wonderful children and wonderful parents. Your child/children are given many opportunities to learn, to experience new things and to be challenged. We talk a lot about the school’s Values and I see these being instilled into the children. I also see the children developing into Responsible Outstanding Citizens. I hope you will be able to spend quality time with your child/children during the Break. School reopens on Monday, November 5.

The cafeteria is now running much better with the food being ready when the students have lunch. New reusable containers with lids were introduced this week. This means we are looking after our environment by getting rid of the plastic film that was used to cover food. This plastic film often blew away in the wind! Well done to the cafeteria staff!!

Staff in the cafeteria have checked that their drinks meet the Ministry of Education food guidelines. They have come up with a list of drinks that will be removed because they do not comply with Healthy Food requirements. Please read below:

We have two issues which is causing concern:

1. Often children put their food in the rubbish bin. They often say they do not like the food that has been ordered for them. I think you will agree that it is a waste of money and a waste of food. Parents are asked to talk to their child to find out what food they like to eat and to order that for their lunch.

2. A small number of parents are ordering lunch after 9.30am. This means the cafeteria staff have less time to get the lunches ready. Parents are required to order lunches BEFORE 9.30am. If an order comes in after 9.30am a reply email will be sent stating the order will not be processed and parents will be contacted to make arrangements to provide lunch for their child/children.

Your cooperation in both these matters would be greatly appreciated.

This week students in 3rd Navas learnt about the different climate zones around the world. They were very busy painting, tracing and cutting their maps.

Everybody had an amazing time at the Colour Run this Friday. Thank you to everyone who bought a Colour Run Kit and to those who made a donation. All the money raised

will go to Save the Children to support education for children with forced displacement.

The British week will be the focus soon after the half term break. The week will finish with the wonderful Guy Fawkes evening. Please schedule this date in your calendar. We look forward to seeing you then.

Although we had to postpone the Primary International Fair we were able to present the class who sold the most raffle tickets with a special pizza lunch with Mr Bridge. The winning class was 2nd Pineda. Well done to all those students and their families for supporting such a good cause.

We also had a pre-raffle to give the community a taste of the real raffle that will happen on January 19th 2019, during the International Fair. The lucky winners are:

During these two weeks our Foundation Stage students along with their families, have been learning about the United Nations and the different nationalities that exist among their peers. Through these activities now they have a clear message about where they come from, in which country they live in and the rights they deserve to be able to be members of a fair and respectful society. Thanks to everyone who has supported this learning through this beautiful experience!

4th Molina Assembly - Christopher Columbus the Explorer
This assembly taught us about the characteristics of a real explorer. Children described Christopher Columbus as someone who is risk taker, open-minded, reflective, brave and courageous. The assembly described where he was born and his life until he discovered the Americas without him knowing it. It was Americo Vespucio who really discovered that what they had found was another continent.

2nd Grade Trip to El Boqueron
We went on an academic field trip yesterday to El Boquerón National Park, located in the crater of the San Salvador Volcano called El Boquerón. This trip has been organised with the intention of providing children with an exciting Exit point to the IPC unit “Active Planet”. This visit was an important addition to the children’s learning process.

This has been a long half term and everyone needs a rest, students and staff alike. So enjoy the break and we look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Monday 5th November.

Junior Science Club
As the ABC reflects upon the role of the United Nations in maintaining peace and bringing humanitarian assistance to those in need, the Junior Science Club (Grades 4 & 5) considered the question of how to provide clean, safe drinking water to those who are without.

The Challenge was made - “Can we drink Pond Water?” Students took a sample of water with various organic matter, fish and algae (similar to the water used by many communities around the world).

In an attempt to find a way to provide clean water, they decided to use Simple Distillation. To make the challenge even more difficult, food colouring was added to the pond water to make look as bad as it smelt.

The students correctly and skillfully assembled the distillation apparatus, used a bunsen burner to apply heat and collected the pure water they distilled.

They concluded that this method could be used to allow pond water to be drunk however communities would require an energy source that was intense enough, such as gas, to be able to use the bunsen Burner.

Congratulations to our young scientists on gaining their Bunsen Burner licence and successfully carrying out an advanced scientific technique using research grade equipment. It should be noted that their conclusion demonstrated an analysis of the result and an evaluation of its application to solve a real world issue. Well done!

IGCSE Drama Performance
From Mr Pike- Drama teacher and G10 HoY
This Wednesday saw the first of this year’s theatrical performances showcasing the talents of our Grade 9 and 10 IGCSE Drama students. The 21 Grade 9 students were presenting group scripted pieces that they have been rehearsing since the middle of this term. They covered a wide range of themes and issues as well as some diverse styles of theatre.

The Grade 10 students were presenting their final piece of Drama coursework in the shape of a monologue. Jean Luc performed Shakespeare’s famous Richard III monologue, delivering a very convincing interpretation. Shane presented a section from Sarah Kane’s 4:48 Psychosis, a dark and troubling piece that explores human emotions. He performed confidently manipulating a range of deep emotions very effectively. Congratulations to all the students who were involved!!

News from the LRC
Letters to the world!
This month, as part of our value: Global Citizen, the 6th grade students have been participating in an international Children’s Day initiative. This is a project run by the Primarschule Ins school in Switzerland. During the project students are partnered up with students from other countries with whom they exchange pen pal letters. The students participate through assemblies, Life Skills lessons and during tutor time. This project is one of two pen pal projects we run through the LRC in conjunction with the 6th grade team, each year. This year’s letters are almost ready to be packaged up and sent to our partner class.

The second initiative is a pen pal project with the International School of Kuantan in Malaysia. 6th A has been corresponding with students since late September. These exchanges took place predominantly online however the group has just completed a wonderful collection of handwritten letters which will be sent off to Malaysia next week.

These international exchanges are taking place during a time in the history of our world when communication across borders, cultural exchanges and the resultant understanding, empathy and friendship are of the highest importance. It is an honour to be able to work together as a school to provide these experiences for our developing global citizens.

Here is a collection of photos of the students in class, working on this Children’s Day initiative.

I wish you all a wonderful half-term break and look forward to seeing you all back before 7.00 am on Monday 5th of November.

Warm regards,

Natalia Cáceres Escalón

Words from the Director

The Class of 2019 completed their PAES examinations this week. We have been pleased with their preparation and attitude despite the exams being postponed at the last minute last week. Well done Bulldogs!

Along with much of the country we have had a difficult week with the rains this week. Thank you to our Actua students who have worked hard this week organizing relief materials for those most affected by the rain. It is always a pleasure to see young people showing compassion and care for other people. Three of our Actua students: Amy Villafuette, Maria Jimena Castro and Alicia Velasquez came to talk to me today to ask for more help from our community. Here is their message and please try to respond:

“ABC ACTUA has asked ABC family to help with donations for the people who have lost their belongings due to the heavy rain. These people are in refuges mainly in the eastern part of El Salvador and along the coast. Rain has been continuous and constant, with little relief in the near future. Therefore, we have extended the period for donations.

Thank you, so we have received toilet paper, sugar, corn flour. Rice, beans and many more items. If you can, please there is still an urgent need for these following basic items:

Blankets, towels, shoes, baby clothes, clothes in general,
Rice, beans, corn flour, soups, pampers, toilette paper, milk.
Dry cereal.

Thank you for your support and empathy during these difficult moments.

Amy, Maria Jimena and Alicia.

I would also like to thank you for all of your patience with the extra traffic issues due to the rain and especially at the end of the day when we have had less sports activity. Our field has been far too wet to use which is also why we have also had to postpone the Primary Friendship Fair and the IGCA turtle release on Saturday. The fair will now take place on Saturday 19 January.

Last Saturday we hosted a morning for parents of 2-3 year olds to get a taste of our world class early years programme. If for some reason you missed the opportunity to join us or if you know a family who may be interested please contact Estefania Chacón who can book you into our next taster morning on Saturday 10 November.

We have had non uniform days during the last few days because of the possibility of an imminent closure and potentially dangerous weather conditions. We intend returning to full school uniform on Monday! If there is a change in plan we will inform you on Sunday by email. We are all hoping and praying for a dry weekend throughout the country.

We hope you have a great weekend with your children.

ABC Sports

Despite the weather ABC teams have been working and playing this week, our teams have participated the the Bilingual League and Juegos Estudiantiles Tournament.

We are very proud of our Basketball Cadetes Boys team who won it last game at Juegos Estudiantiles and they finished undefeated. Congratulations with these results they became the Champions of La Libertad.

On November the 10th ABC will host the First Table Tennis Tournament, this it is a great opportunity for our students to compete and also for all ABC community that are invited to participate.

Important dates
Saturday Nov. 10th, ABC Table Tennis Tournament
Wednesday Nov. 21st, Secondary sports day at Flor Blanca Stadium

Words from the Head of Primary

When children returned from their four day ’break’ many had taken the time to complete work given to them by their teachers. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. As climate change begins to affect local weather, the rain storms become more unpredictable. Our first priority is the safety and well-being of your child/children.

A casualty of the wet weather has been the International Friendship Festival. It was a very difficult decision to postpone this very important event for Primary. But the wet weather and wet grounds forced us to postpone it until Saturday, January 19th. I hope the change has not inconvenience too many families. I know the organising committee are committed to making sure everyone who comes to the Festival on January 19th will have a great time!!

It is great seeing so many parents support the 3 way conferences. Having your child explain what they are doing well and what they an improve on is a very powerful way to support your child’s learning and achievement. To support children on their journey of learning there MUST be a positive partnership between the school and the home. This provides the foundations of success. If you were unable to attend and wish to have a 3 way conversation, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher.

Pre-kinder and Kinder have started borrowing books from the Lower Primary Library. Children are allowed to choose the book they would like to take home. We are aware that many children have not chosen appropriate books for their level. It is important to clarify that the objective of this activity is not for the child to read the whole book, but for the children to start having the experience of taking out books from the library, being responsible for their choice, motivating them to read and love books. Remember that children have many ways to enjoy books, (by looking at the pictures, recognising letters etc). Over time they will begin to choose more appropriate books, discover that there are different types of books and develop preferences. If your child brings home a book that is not appropriate (for example a chapter book), please celebrate their choice by asking why they chose it, read some of it aloud to them and discuss what book they might choose next time.

We also have a Lower Primary Library toy that your child may bring home to celebrate their interest in reading. Please return the toy the next day. The Lower Primary Library is now open every morning from 6.50-7.30am and Mondays from 12.30-2.00pm for parents to borrow books.

PRE-KINDER - CURRICULUM NIGHT
Pre-kinder parents are invited to the Curriculum Night this coming Thursday 25th of October 2018 at 6:00pm in the ABC Performing Arts Centre - PAC. During the evening, parents will discover and experience how their child learns by following their own interests stimulated by an active learning environment.

5th Hernández hands on learning
This week our 5th grade students have been learning to calculate the area and perimeter of different figures, starting with rectangular shapes. What better place to explore than our school?

First Grade Turtle Release
First Grade has planned an academic trip on Friday 9th of November to release turtles and clean up the beach at la Hola Betos Costa del Sol. This field trip will enable our children to develop the international and geography objectives of our IPC unit “The Earth-our home”. At the same time we will be reinforcing the values we have been working on; global, respect and teamplayer. We will be sharing photos after the event.

Who am I - Prepa Exit Point
To provide the children with an opportunity to show their parents their learning, Prepa parents have been invited to come to school and help them make a poster all about themselves. The poster will focus on their family. Please get in contact with your child’s class teacher for more details.

3-Way Conferences
The Upper Primary parent conferences started this week and will finish on October 26th. If you dont have an appointment please contact your class teacher via email. Please note that due to these conferences, all Catholic Club and Caminando con Jesus sessions will be cancelled during these 2 weeks.

International Fair Raffle
Unfortunately the International Fair had to be postponed due to the weather. Nevertheless, we will have a pre-raffle on Tuesday 23rd Oct at 9.05am which we will be livestreaming.

Colour Run
Primary will participate in the Colour Run organized by the 12 Grade Prefects with the help of NGO Save The Children to support education for children with forced displacement. It is an event that will be a run filled with fun activities, great food and music. The event will take place on Friday 26th October. We thank the children and their parents their support to this run in celebration for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

McLay Fun Run Funds
This year’s McLay Fun Run was a success and we raised $445.35. The run is organised to raise funds to support developing sports programmes in local schools.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

I would like to start this weekly by thanking the Staff who have been busy modifying the learning plans in order to provide meaningful work for students not to fall behind. Thank you also to parents for your support. I also want to thank all the community for bringing in food and donations for people in need. The ABC cares!

"But, everybody does it!"
We are increasingly concerned over the widespread use and normalisation of vaping in teenage culture. “But everybody does it” is the rallying cry of teens in their attempt to disarm adults about risky behaviors. You may hear your child say this when you talk with them about vaping.

I take this opportunity to share some excerpts of a website and e-journal regarding this topic and I encourage parents to visit it and learn more about this trend.

*FCD Prevention Works website

What Is Vaping?*
"Vaping" is the use of an electronic cigarette (e-cig) or vaporizer (vape) to deliver nicotine, marijuana, and/or other chemicals to the body. Vapes contain liquid chemicals (e-juice), along with a mechanism to heat those chemicals, all in a small device. They come in many styles, but generally look like high-tech cigarettes. Vapes heat the chemicals to create an aerosol form of those chemicals, that gets delivered into the body and the environment around the user. Vaped chemicals enter the lungs, bloodstream, and brain within seconds. The user may feel lightheaded, dizzy, or experience a rush or high, which may set off cravings for more.

Please note that even if you as parents allow your child to use this, these are against school rules and they will be taken as if they were cigarettes should we find them a student in possession of them or worse yet, using them. Please help up by speaking with your children about this and we do appeal to parents not to allow your child to use them.

There will be two meetings for each Grade and both will cover the same information. All students and parents need to attend at least one of these, depending on which is most convenient for you according to the appointments made. Words from the Director

We have all been shocked by the unfortunate weather this week which has led to such distress in the country and to schools closing across the country.

We would like to provide assistance for people affected by flooding in areas of La Libertad and we are asking if you could send relief materials to school on Monday when we will have a collection. In particular we would like fried food such as rice , beans, milk powder and any spare clothing, blankets or sanitary products.

I hope you have managed to cope with your children at home and have managed to help them complete the work we have been setting. It is important that we set work especially for our older students because we do not want them to miss out on the rhythm of their studies. We are looking forward to seeing them back at school on Monday and checking the work. We are working out how we will catch up for lost learning time next week.

Next Wednesday the government is planning a day for schools to practice their earthquake and evacuation drills. It was originally planned for last Wednesday which was the anniversary of the 1986 earthquake in San Salvador. We will be going through our procedures as well as testing our Madres Enlaces contact chain. Please do not panic if you are called. It should only be a test!

Tomorrow morning we are opening our doors to potential students for the class of 2034 who will be starting Pre Kinder in August 2019. It is an opportunity for parents to taste our child centred learning environment. All educational research across the world shows that our style of free flow leads to the best long term child development. If you have not arranged to visit tomorrow we do have other Saturday mornings which you can sign up to. You can also invite friends with children who will be between 3 and 5 years old in August. Please contact Estefania Chacón at school. Her contact details are estefaniachacon@abc-net.edu.sv

We hope that weather allow us to resume our sports practices normally and we are waiting for our students-athletes with the same enthusiasm, sports time table will run as normal.

Words from the Director

On Wednesday 10th October we are joining the national day of preparation for an emergency such as an earthquake. We will be going through our emergency procedures with children, including how to respond to an earthquake and our evacuation procedures. You can see these procedures on our parent website. We will not be evacuating the campus but we will also be asking our Madres Enlaces to check their communication network which is part of our final evacuation plan.

I have been delighted to talk to a number of children this week about plastic and recycling. Diego in Grade Three came to talk to me about his concern about plastic straws and their effect on their environment. He is working with his family to convince restaurants to stop giving plastic straws to customers. Diego told me that the problem with plastic straws is they end up in our seas and have catastrophic effects on sea animals including turtles. We all know how important El Salvador’s beaches are to turtles and so it is especially important we keep our beaches clean and that we stop plastic getting into the sea. The Upper Primary Student Council have also been talking to the School Management Team and me about acting locally to help impact on this global issue and we are going to work together to help ensure our environment is clean. I want to thank 5th Truscott for their amazing assembly on this theme. We are starting a serious campaign to make our world a better place. Here are our global activists!!

It was good to meet many of you at the Coffee morning with the Chair if the Board Mrs. Portillo and myself earlier this week. A number of issues were raised which may be of interest to a wider audience. I have summarized them.

Firstly we are aware there have been some problems with credit card payments from Banco Cuscatlan and Proamerica which have led to payments not being processed correctly by the banks and therefore not being received by us. We apologise if we have then taken action to redeem this money when in fact the error was a banking one and not a failure by the parents to pay. I would like to urge all parents to keep up to date with payments to avoid such problems in future but we will also work with the banks to try to help them avoid these problems in future.

We were asked about IGCSE and IB grading comparisons and we have put a very simple comparison on the parent website which we will develop further to try and improve understanding of grades between these programmes. Here is the link. I would also like to remind everyone that we have trained university guidance counsellors who work with our children from Grade 9 and if any parents would like more individual guidance please contact them via one of the school offices at school. They do invite all parents in Grade 11 to individual interviews with their children as part of the guidance process as well as whole grade information meetings. We have many universities visiting school at the moment and fairs coming soon which parents may also attend. All the details are on our calendar.

Parents may leave their children at Sala Cuna if they are working late one day or if for some reason they are delayed. The sala cuna is open until 4 pm. If they are collected within 15 minutes then there is no charge but if they stay beyond 15 minutes there is a charge of $1 per hour. If you know your child is going to be attending, please book Sala Cuna by emailing your class teacher and your child will go straight there rather than wait in the car park.

We celebrated Children’s Day this week as a day of hope for the future. I hope you enjoyed your celebrations with your children. Please see our Facebook article regarding the importance of Children's Day at the ABC.

In addition, you can read our article on the importance and benefits of the International Primary Curriculum, written by Nick Ware, our Key Stage 1 Coordinator, here.

ABC Sports

It has been a great week of sports with undoubtedly the highlight being the amazing performance of the Under 12 boys basketball team. As champions of La Libertad they participated in the national final. They won their semi final and were narrowly defeated in the final. They are effectively the second best basketball team in the country. If you have ever seen them play you would admire their energy, their skill and the fun they have a sa team. Congratulations to everyone of them. There is a fuller report on the ABC Newsblog.

21st November Secondary sports day at Flor Blanca Stadium

Words from the Head of Primary

Like a lot of people, ABC is very concerned about what is happening to our environment. The main concern is the amount of plastics going into the waterways, lakes and the sea. Scientists predict that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. By 2050 all the children currently at ABC will be adults and probably will have their own family, so this serious issue is going to affect them greatly.

Our students are very aware of this issue and are very keen to Think Globally and act locally! This means all of us need to act now!! We have students who have strong opinions about the issue and also have some solutions. The Primary School Council met with the Senior Management Team on Tuesday to discuss how we can make sure all at ABC are aware of the problem and to ensure EVERYONE does their bit to reduce plastic pollution.

On Wednesday it was 5th Truscott’s turn to present their assembly. It was called Pollution and Activism Campaign. Children learned about the importance of recycling and saving the planet from pollution. It was an excellent way for 5th Truscott to inform us of this serious issue. In fact we were so impressed with their message, they have been asked to show all of the Secondary students.

3-Way Conferences
The Upper Primary parent conferences will be underway very shortly. You will soon receive an invitation letter to help you book your appointment. These conferences will take place on October 15th - 26th. Please note that due to these conferences, all Catholic Club and Caminando con Jesus sessions will be cancelled during those 2 weeks.

Children’s Day
All our primary students enjoyed a fun ‘Children’s Day’ celebration in school on Monday. Children watched an hilarious show by our favourite clown ‘Fransortes’. Lower Primary were delighted by the cards and letters they received from their parents, which were delivered by our very own mailman. Everyone involved in organising the day did a wonderful job.

International Fair
This year the International Fair will take place on Saturday 20th October. All students are expected to attend to support their classes and to enjoy the entertainment and the refreshments. This event is supporting our curriculum and giving students a chance to practise their entrepreneurial skills. Please help your child to sell all their raffle tickets. There is a prize for the class that sells the most. Please make sure all Upper Primary children have brought a filled jar for the tombola. Once again, thank you for your support.

McLay Fun Run
Pre-K to 4th grade students will participate in the McLay Fun Run on Friday 5th October, here at the ABC. I’m sure all students will try their best and make this a successful event again this year. As in previous years, all Primary students are asked to bring in a dollar, which will be used to buy sports equipment for a local school so we can spread the joy of participating in sport.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

We are very much looking forward to our annual Colour Run and have sent a letter via email to all parents asking for their support. (see below)

The Colour Run is the culmination of the month of October when we celebrate our United Nations Day. It is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of how important it is for our children to be activists for children in providing a better world for all. Children with children, for children. It was also wonderful to see our Student Council and Prefect team celebrating Children’s day on Monday as they greeted everyone coming into school and then holding games for all to enjoy at lunchtime. Thank you Student Council and Prefect team!

COLOUR RUN

Dear parents and carers,

The COLOUR RUN is an event organized by the 12th grade team of Prefects with the support of Save the Children, and its main objective is to support the education of children who have suffered from forced displacement. This is a race full of fun activities, food, and music. It will take place on Friday 26th October, and the kit to participate will cost $10.00 (it includes T-Shirt, bandana, hydrating beverage, powder painting, and more!). If you are interested in participating, please fill out the response slip provided below, and return it with the money inside an envelope by Tuesday 16th October.

We hope all the community joins in and supports this great race as part of the United Nations celebrations, and thereby contribute to “Think Globally and Act Locally”, and with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.

Next week we are welcoming two theatre companies as they bring their dramatic productions for all Secondary school students. Tuesday KS4 and IB students will attend “Superman, todas son mis hijas” and Friday KS3 students will watch “El día de ellas.” We are truly fortunate to have such wonderful activities for our students on our very own campus. More on this next week!
