27: Friday 13th March 2015

From the Director

We are looking forward to a fun day at the Parents Association Summer Carnival tomorrow. I know many families will come to this event together and it will be wonderful to see the ABC community having fun together. There will be the normal rides, lots of games and plenty to eat and drink! Please note we will not be selling alcohol as there will be students and young people at the event all day long.

Next week the whole school is celebrating Brain week and we will be holding a number of activities and assemblies to promote our use of our brains! We will also be launching our value of being creative next week and hope you will also celebrate the importance of being creative and using your imagination at home.

We have our Mathcounts team and our Hacia Democracy team in Mexico this weekend competing and we look forward to hearing their news. We have been informed that they achieved third place in the Mathrelay competition and the Mathcounts is taking place today.

Please note we have the Parents Convocatoria on Wednesday evening starting at 6:00pm in the PAC and we hope you will be able to attend.

We hope to welcome you to the Summer Carnival tomorrow!

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

I was able to visit the Grade 1 sleepover and watch the fantastic show put on by the teachers for the children - very amusing and the students loved it! Everything in camp was linked with their IPC theme of ‘The Circus’ and the whole event made a wonderful exit point for the children.

The Primary Choir did a splendid job along with ABC musicians and secondary choir students at the Bicultural Festival on Saturday. I enjoyed the singing and other musical performances and felt very proud of our Primary Choir members.

I have managed to pop along to a few of the Early Years swimming lessons and have been amazed by the confidence and skill level of such young children. Well done to the students and their swimming teachers!

Red Nose Day was greeted with great excitement in the Primary school today. Thank you to everyone who bought a red nose and donated to charity. Some children were unable to get a red nose as there were not quite enough. We are sorry for the disappointment.

The Swimming Galas will be starting very soon and parents are invited to drop in and spend some more time in school, cheering their children, encouraging them to do their best and take a little risk. Our students do very well in the pool and we are very lucky to have such a prestigious coach as part of our PE team. As a national holiday has very recently been announced we are having to reschedule the Grade 4 Gala. This will now take place on Wednesday 25th March at 8.00 am.

Tomorrow is the Summer Carnival. I am assured it is very exciting and that I will love it and I am sure I will, as long as it is not too loud! I hope to see you all there.

Keep an eye open for your children’s class assemblies below. There are only a few left to do before the end of this term.

Have a wonderful week.

Head of Primary

Secondary News

Supporting Charities
Secondary School students have been working hard to support two very worthy charities. Today (Friday 13th March) students, at the cost of $1, have been wearing red noses to support Comic Relief’s ‘Red Nose Day’. Over $400 had been raised by Grade 11 students selling red noses by end of school on Thursday and further sales were expected today. Well done to the Grade 11s and many thanks to the students and staff for their support.

Since its launch in 1988, Red Nose Day has become a British institution. It’s a day, every two years, when people get together and do something funny for money at home, school and work.

Comic Relief spends the money raised by Red Nose Day to help people in need across the world.

The money raised by selling red nose at the ABC will be divided between a local charity and Comic Relief (more details to follow along with the final amount raised).

Next week we are supporting International Down Syndrome Day with a t-shirt and jeans day on Friday 20th March. Please note that students are only permitted to wear non-uniform if they are wearing the International Down Syndrome Day t-shirt.

The International Down Syndrome Day t-shirt can be purchased for $5 from outside the Secondary School Office on Monday (the t-shirt was also on sale at the end of this week).

Saturday 21st March marks the 10th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day. The purpose of this day to is raise money to support people with Down Syndrome, along with their families.

Down Syndrome International, the organisers of the International Down Syndrome Day, encourages people across the world to raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.

Money raised by the ABC will go to support the local Down Syndrome charity the Paraiso Down Foundation. The Paraiso Down Foundation offers services to people with Down Syndrome and they provide services to families - including formative workshops, seminars and talks related to the topic. The Paraiso Down Foundation works with more than one hundred families in El Salvador.

Brain Awareness Week and Francophone Week
As reported in last week’s ABC Weekly, next week is Brain Awareness Week at ABC. It is also Francophone Week and, in celebration, the French Department and the LRC will be holding a special ‘Lunch on the Lawn’ next Thursday (Thursday 19th March), at lunchtime, in front of the LRC.

12th IB Art Exhibition
The display showcases the culmination of two years work by the IB Art students. Pushing the creative boundaries, art work will be on display that has been inspired by various themes and which are expressed through a visual language; producing a response from its feelings and thinking.

The sample prompts reflection and analysis, provided by a range of artistic expressions ranging from traditional ones such as painting, sculpture and drawings, digital like video and photography, and new forms of representation.

The 2015 Art Exhibition promises to exceed all expectations of creativity and originality with more than 150 pieces of art on display.

We invite the ABC community to visit the exhibition in the PAC from Monday 16th March to Wednesday 18th March.

Warm regards,

Stephen Spicer
