26: Friday 15th March 2019

Words from the Director

What an amazing week. We welcomed the triumphant Key Stage Three Maths team home on Monday celebrating their amazing performance in Mexico. We are so proud of their success.

On Tuesday the ABC hosted the final of the Boys Varsity Bilingual league. In a tough game our boys won the title in a 5-4 penalty shootout against Lamatapec in front of a large crowd underneath our lights. Congratulations to the team and coaching staff on a great season so far. The boys, along with the girls team are now participating in the College Cup.

We have a busy week next week starting on Monday with the Parent Convocatoria which will take place at 6 pm in the ABCLT because the PAC is being prepared for the IB Art Exhibition which opens on Wednesday. It is always one of the highlights of the year and will be open to visitors on Thursday and Friday next week. There is also an important IGCSE options meeting for Class of 2023 parents next Thursday. I look forward to seeing many of you at these events

Words from the Head of Primary

Bugsy Malone- I want to congratulate all of our students who have been involved in the production of Bugsy Malone. They have all been working hard to produce a fabulous production that showcases their talents, energy and creativity. I am delighted that a number of Primary children are also part of Bugsy Malone. I hope you can find time to go see it. There is a performance on tonight and on Saturday night, so please get your tickets quickly as they are selling fast.

Sun Danger- There has been much evidence given about the dangers of too much time in the Sun. We know that too much exposure to the Sun can cause skin cancer especially with young children. Often health issues in children appear in their teenage and adult years. We do get Vitamin D from the Sun, which does help fight colds and other illness. In school we are responding to the warning by ensuring they wear their Sunhat, drinking water, keeping in the shade, wearing sensible clothing (no heavy hoodie’s) and applying factor 30 Sun cream before coming to school. Also, it is important adults are good role models and follow these guidelines when families go to the beach, park or having a bbq in the backyard!

Pick Up After School- Thank you to those parents who are prompt at picking up their children at the end of the day. However a small number of children wait for up to two hours until someone picks them up. I realise that traffic and/or work can make it difficult to pick up students at a reasonable time.

So, have you thought of a plan ‘B?’ If you know you are going to be late, is their a family member (Grandma, Uncle, Cousin) or a a trusted friend who could pick up your child/children for you? Could you carpool with friends who also have children at ABC? Waiting up to two hours is not desirable, so please consider a Plan B!!

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

This week we have so many exciting things to celebrate! Firstly, we celebrate the wonderful performance of our Mathscounts Teams in Monterrey (as you can see in Mr Keslake’s message above) We are so proud of their effort seeing that it truly led to our success! Then on Tuesday we had a fantastic time watching our U18 Varsity football team lead the school to victory winning to Lamatepeque at the Bilingual league Final! Go Bulldogs! Thursday our very much awaited production of “Bugsy Malone” What a display of talent! I am very much looking forward to the Friday and Saturday shows! I encourage and ask for the whole community’s support to attend at least one of the productions as this is what a close supportive values based community does: Support each other!

In memory of Diego Mina
This week we received from Saint Jude’s hospital, where Diego was treated, a dedicated copy of “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, as an addition to our LRC. Diego was an enthusiast of learning and this is a wonderfully symbolic presence of Diego at the ABC for years to come. Thank you Saint Jude’s!

CLASS of 2023- IGCSE Options Evening

Class of 2021 - IB Options Evening

Geography trip to Iceland
Written by Maria Jose Conde (Grade 11).
The geography trip to Iceland was an unforgettable experience. On this trip we got the chance to learn and extend our learning of various geography topics. We got the chance to experience different cultures, to visit new places and we had an amazing time doing so.

Due to the geographical landscape and nature within Iceland, we managed to discover waterfalls, coastlines, volcanoes, glaciers as well as local cultures and tourism management to support what we learn in Geography classes. Each time we visited a place, we related its background to a certain topic that we have previously studied either in IGCSE or currently at IB.

The students' favorite activities of the trip were visiting the Blue Lagoon, walk around the glaciers, observing the beauty of Iceland’s waterfalls and going Ice Skating. The fact that we got to see some natural creations such as the glaciers on the third largest ice cap on Earth was a unique experience. These glaciers may no longer exist in a distant future due to climate changes caused by the melting.

During the trip, we were able to experience the differences between Iceland's culture and El Salvador's culture including different food and language. We found that the Icelandic people really care about their environment, they are very enthusiastic about recycling and use almost no fossil fuels in their energy supply. All their hot water in this cold country is provided by Geothermal heating which we got to experience on our final day during our visit to the Blue Lagoon.

We are very thankful for the teachers who came with us, for taking care of us at every moment and for being such incredible teachers. We are also thankful for all the friends we made on the trip across the year groups. We were like one big family.

Overall we as students believe that it was a great trip, educational and incredibly fun. If you would like to read more about it please visit http://abcfieldtrips.blogspot.com/.

Class of 2023 - Empowerment camping trip to Portezuelo
From Mr Gale
After a morning of lessons and a beautiful journey through the El Salvador countryside, we arrived at Portezuelo near Juayua with 61 hungry students. Once there, we got to enjoy the first of our delicious meals at the site. The excited students then got a bit of time to relax where they unpacked and explored the campsite (including the ruin of a church where the boys would spend the night) and got the first of many chances to play on the swings and seesaws in the beautiful grounds. The afternoon then saw a few icebreaker games before the students were put into random groups to enjoy the many activates on offer. These were relay races (where students were dressing up as dinosaurs amongst other things), horse riding, kicking the bell (where if they succeed they will find true love in their life, I will let your child explain), giant volleyball and table football. The twist with table football was the students were the players! It was great to see the students and adults getting involved and having fun, especially the students who were not in their immediate friendship groups but instead had the chance to spend time with other members of the class of 2023.

After 2 hours it was time for more downtime before dinner. This downtime included an impromptu disco thanks to Mr Valladares’ music and the students ability to create fun and games was great to see. It was also nice to see the students having to socialise and not spend time on phones, something that made the trip better in my opinion. After we ate we had time for the evening entertainment. After a short discussion (if any students are reading this I was right about the rules of capture the flag by the way) we played my version followed by the students version of ‘capture the flag’ that I admit was more of a success. The game involved running around in the dark with the adults having to shine a light on them. I think it was fair to say the students did well using their imagination to find hiding places. By the time this had finished the night was drawing in, but we were lucky enough to have a bonfire where students roasted marshmallows and told each other scary stories in the dark. After a fantastic first day the students then got ready for bed and went straight to sleep…….. mas o menos.

After a cold and windy night (but not too windy thankfully) we all woke up, ate our breakfast and got ready for our hikes. The students had a choice of a short 45 minute hike or a longer 2 hour one. I was surprised and proud of how many students chose the longer one, and I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did. At the summit, we were greeted to blue skies and volcanoes but the thing I will take away from the hike was the determination and comradery of the students. Helping each other to get to the top in what was not an easy hike at all.

On our return to the camp, the now exhausted students got to play zorb football. This is where 10 students at a time got into blow up balls which rebound off each other without fear of getting hurt. The football itself got lost and the game became ‘run into each other’. It is hard to explain, but I can confirm it was as fun as it sounds.

After lunch and a quick prize of dressing up as a dinosaur, it was time for us to leave Portezuelo to return to the ABC. The students behaved brilliantly throughout the trip, followed instructions as I would expect and did the ABC proud. I would like to thank everyone who helped make the trip a success; the staff at Portezuelo, the staff members from the ABC, Miguel and John our parent volunteers and especially Marielos from the secondary office. Marielos put in hours of work to ensure the trip was the success it was and I would like to thank her on behalf of everyone. I hope the students enjoyed the activities, spending a night with friends and hopefully made some new ones that they did not have before.
