16: Friday 13th January 2017

From the Director

We have all been feeling the effects of the sad news over the holiday and praying for the family of Claudia Martinez who so sadly passed away just after Christmas. We know they have appreciated our love and support.

I would like to congratulate a number of the Class of 2018 who have been selected to be our Prefect Leadership Team for next year. Our new Head Students are Daniela Castillo and Matias Hudson and the Deputy Head Students are Andrés Figueroa, Gabriela Garay, Sofía Martínez, Daniela Durán, Diego Arévalo and Raquel Isart. Congratulations to all of them and to the new prefect team who you will be seeing in the car parks and on duty in school.
It has been a busy first week with children bouncing back into school. I walked around school on Monday morning and was pleased to see how quickly everyone had settled back down to work. I know the holidays were fun and enjoyable but it is great to see children coming back to school with a smile on their faces. Please see the link to the ABC Newsblog about the new Student Leadership Team.

This term we are starting our assessments for places in Pre Kinder - the future ABC class of 2032. If you have any siblings you would like to be assessed or if you have friends who would like their children to be considered for a place in our new Lower Primary classrooms they need to contact us urgently before it is too late. Equally if you have registered an interest you must hand in your documents by Friday 20th January in order to be considered for the first round of assessments. Please do not wait as once we have done the assessments we may have no further spaces available. We do have an amazing new learning environment for our youngest children designed to help them develop as all round, confident bilingual learners. We believe it is the best possible start you can give your children so please make sure you do not miss out.

In the weeks before Christmas we collected Christmas shoeboxes as a way of sharing the gift of Christmas with other young people in our country. We distributed over 500 shoeboxes to various children’s homes, hospitals and other centres caring for young people..On Christmas Eve I came into school and witnessed Operation Pupusa in full throw. It was amazing to see so many ABC students participating with Exabrits to provide food and educational supplies to children and families all over the country. They put together over 5,000 bags for distribution.

It was a pleasure to welcome visitors from the El Salvador Olympic Committee in school this week promoting Modern Pentathlon and a range of other Olympic sports. We are looking for new sports, ideas and ways to encourage student participation and hopefully this will prove a useful connection. I hope those of you who are Exabrits received the Exabrit newsletter. If not it can be accessed on our site. I am excited about the coming term. Good luck to the Class of 2018 for next week with their circus.

We look forward to seeing the ski trip safely back from Mammoth on Sunday.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,

We had a very smooth start to the term. The students were happy to be back and see their friends and teachers. As I walked round the school the classrooms were very peaceful and the students were highly engaged in all their learning activities.

The weather for the Ski Trip in Mammoth has been a bit unpredictable but the students have still been out on the slopes honing their skills on the snow boards and skis. The videos and pictures I have been sent show our students making great progress and having a wonderful time. I look forward to hearing about their adventures when they get back this weekend.

We are very please to inform you that at this year's Santa's Festival we made a profit of $3186.30 after all expenses were paid. This amount will help us cover the complete cost of the 3 new scholarships approved for this year as well as the complete cost of 5 of the 18 scholarships we already had in place. Our next ‘Fairs to Educate’ event is our annual Spring Fair, which will take place on March 18th. The Scholarships Committee members are already working towards this. Thank you to all our families for your support.

Please remember all shoes should have fastenings to keep them on, all long hair must be tied up all the time and no jewellery should be worn in school except for a watch or plain stud earrings.

Just before the Christmas holidays we hosted a Biathlon competition in school. Please see the report from Oscar Lima our Primary head of Sports in Spanish below. Our students were very successful. We have a rich supply of sporting talent in school.

The time for new students to register for places in school is at hand. We will be carrying out our entrance evaluations in the next few weeks. The Prospective Parent Night will be on January 26th and there will be a series of open mornings for people to visit the school, have a look round and see us in action. Please let any friends or family with young children know about these and suggest they contact Ms. Anabella Soto in Admin for more information.

As many of you will have already heard we tragically lost a highly valued member of staff to a long term illness over the Christmas holidays.
We held a minute’s silence in our Monday assembly to dedicate to Ms Claudia Martínez our Primary ICT teacher and how much we will miss her.
Our thoughts and prayers are also with her family at this very sad time.

Secondary News

A warm welcome back to all Secondary parents and students. It has been a good first week and everyone seems to be quickly back into the swing of work after the Christmas break. I want to thank everyone involved in the amazing Operation Pupusa which took place in the few days before Christmas and where so many of our children helped make Christmas special for other people. I know we also made a huge difference with our Christmas Box campaign and thank you to so many parents who helped with these. We have had many letters and expressions of thanks for helping communities celebrate Christmas.

We have a busy week next week with Leadership our ABC Value theme and it starts on Monday, celebrating Martin Luther King Day. We want all of our students to understand their role as leaders in all aspects of their lives but also to expect great things from their leaders and role models. I am also looking forward to the Class 2018 Circus next week and look forward to seeing many of you there.

Please make a note of the upcoming events where your presence is so important.
