17: Friday 20th January 2017

From the Director

I would like to start this newsletter by thanking the ABC Community for its kindness and support. I have never worked or been part of such a caring community! This week we have been supporting Virginia Catlin during her sudden illness and everyone has been amazing - staff, parents, Board members and students. I am proud to be associated with such a caring family. Virginia is currently in hospital but has written a note in the Secondary News section below.

I want to congratulate the Class of 2018 for their teamwork, resilience and creativity which culminated in Trasendence. Congratulations to all their support team and especially the Madres Enlace who worked so hard to put the show together. The final show is this evening and again I am sure it will be a huge success. Tonight is a sell out so please do not turn up if you do not have a ticket.

We celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Peace accords this week with a message of optimism and hope for the future for our children. I believe we owe it to our children to look forward and to expect a better world in order to encourage them to see themselves as builders of peace.

We also celebrated Martin Luther King Day last Monday and you can see a report on the ABC Newsblog.

We have a number of staff training events this term which staff will be participating in and as a result we have decided that we will close school early on Thursday 23rd February when the half term break starts.

Here in school we seek to be very aware of safeguarding issues with respect to all aspects of our children’s lives. We are aware we live in a society where gun ownership is a concern and following the very sad incident in a school in Monterrey last week we are publishing advice on careful gun ownership and practice for you to read. It is important we are all alert to the possible dangers and work to ensure our children are emotionally secure, positive and safe.

I hope you all have a great weekend with your children.

Primary News

Dear Parents and Carers,
Our happy travellers from the Ski trip to Mammoth returned safe and sound on Sunday. Here is a report of the trip from Mr Hall.

16ft of snow in 8 days, temperatures of -10 degrees and winds up to 90mph may not sound like everyone's idea of fun but it was certainly ours! After a year of planning and anticipation we arrived in Mammoth, California, to one of the biggest storms to hit the area in over 10 years. Conditions were unique, the hotel was buried in snow to the third floor and sidewalks turned into tunnels through the snow. None of that stopped our intrepid group from having a great time and learning to ski and snowboard. Under the tutelage of Mammoth's excellent instructors all ten students made excellent progress and can now legitimately call themselves skiers and snowboarders, with the control and expertise to independently navigate themselves down some impressively steep mountain slopes. As well as endless snow fun we bowled, tubed, snowmanned, snowballed, shopped, ate like kings and queens, swam in hot pools and jumped in snow in our shorts. Everywhere we went we received compliments from the public on what polite, respectful, well behaved and fun young people we were travelling with. A group of true ABC ROCs who made this year's Mammoth Trip rock!

On the 26th January we will be having our prospective parents night for parents who are hoping to enroll their children into Pre-Kinder this year. It will start at 6.00pm and will give a general introduction to the school and a particular explanation of our early years culture and educational programme. Please make sure all your friends and relatives who are thinking about sending their children here know about it. If you have a child who will be entering Pre-K please make sure you have registered with Ms. Anabella Soto in the admissions office. We will be carrying out our entrance evaluations at the end of January and beginning of February.

The results of the Wonder League Robotics competition are in and we are very proud to announce that the Zatrix team in the 9 to 12 age range came first in El Salvador. Over 5000 teams signed up from 52 countries, 44% of whom were girls! All of our teams completed the 5 missions and scored very well. The students involved will all receive certificates for their participation in assembly on Monday. Well done to the ICT teacher team for encouraging and supporting our students and guiding them through the competition process.

Here is the winning team in no particular order:
Salvador Antonio Duran Olmedo
Diego Alejandro Bendeck Safie
Hugo Javier Perdomo Arevelo
Victor Tarazi Dumas
David Sebastian Aguinada Magana
They are all from 5th Grade. Well done lads!

In the Primary school we have an English language learning resource called Learning Village. It is an online resource that can be used in and out of school and is used world wide. We only select certain students who will benefit from using it to have a login. Each week there is a league table for use and this week we made it into the top slot for the week for the first time. Well done all our students who are working with Learning Village.

Please note the school will be closing early on Thursday 23rd February at the beginning of our half term break.

We are holding the auditions for the school show ‘The Sound of Music’ this week. If your child was interested they should have signed up with Mr Diaz by now. There will be auditions with Mr Diaz and those who succeed will go onto a second round with the full set of music teachers.

Congratulations from everyone in Primary to the Class of 2018 for the amazing show Trasendence. It is a performance to be proud of and shows their many talents.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Head of Primary

Secondary News

Message from Ms. Catlin:
I am disappointed that I have not been able to be in school this term because of my health issues. I am keeping in touch with colleagues and missing being with the ABC family that I have come to feel a part of already. I have received so much support from so many people at school and am very grateful to all of you.

Good luck to Class of 2018 for the Circus tonight. I am very sorry I can not be there but I am looking forward to seeing the video. I hear it went very well last night and you can see a report on thee Newsblog. Good luck to the Class of 2017 and 2019 who have their mock exams next week.
