36: Friday 7th June 2019

Words from the Director

We celebrated many successes this morning with our traditional lap of honour. You can see some pictures on this ABC blog link. It reminded us of another very successful school year with children participating in so many amazing events and competitions. Teamwork is a recurring theme in school as we appreciate the importance of working with each other to achieve goals. This is true at so many levels and I firmly believe that teamwork is exemplified by the partnership between school and home. The Accion de Gracias ceremony this week for the Class of 2019 perfectly expressed that unique relationship between each student, their parents and the school. A partnership which prepares our graduates for a challenging and fulfilling future as responsible global citizens. I know we will see many other examples during our awards assemblies and reflections on the school year during the next two weeks.

I was delighted by a surprise whole school assembly earlier this week to thank Julie and me for our time at the school. We have also had many kind letters from parents looking back over our time at this school. I would simply like to express how much I have enjoyed working in this amazing community. I I have long since realised what a special community we are and the way we work together. I have never worked at a school where students are such positive role models for the schools values. At the moment we are finalising the prizes for the graduating class of 2019. It is clear that we have so many students who are worthy of recognition and it has once again filled us with pride in our students.

I hope you have a great weekend with your children and I look forward to seeing many of you in school next week.

Sports

The lap of honour today showcased the record number of participating students in sports and other school activities. The bilingual league has been amazing this year with first or second place in so many events but especially football and basketball for girls and boys. Congratulations to all of the teams, their coaches and supporting parents.

Unfortunately the U16 College Cup final was postponed this week and hopefully will be played next week.

We have plans to increase parent involvement in sports next year and look forward to an even more exciting year.

Words from the Head of Primary

Staff have been very busy carrying out final assessments this week and writing reports that will be shared with you on Friday 14th June. It is important that parents both celebrate the successes while supporting the next learning steps of your child.

This week our grade 5 students have been visiting the Secondary school for a taste of Secondary school life. They are being taught all of the essential things they will need to know before they get there and experiencing some of the different routines and locations. Feedback so far has been that they have had a great time.

Today the rest of our Primary students have visited their new classrooms and either introduced to their new teacher or told who their new teacher will be if they are not in the country yet. They will have started an activity that will be finished or contribute to next years start of term. I am sure they will have lots to tell you about their new class.

Book of the Week
The Perfect Sofa by Fifi Kuo

Penguin and Panda decide they need a new sofa so they go shopping. As they try a number of sofa’s the author delightfully describes what is wrong with each one they try. The size and shape of the font echoes the words of the minimal text, beginning with the most obvious adjectives and then going on to some surprising descriptions. The characterisation of the two friends is hilarious – I would particularly single out Penguin’s expression when they try out the sofa that is too colourful! A more detailed picture in colours reminiscent of Van Gogh depicts the friends as they make their way home. And do you think they did find the perfect sofa after all?

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and guardians,

We are all very busy closing assessment periods, welcoming our Grade 5 students and parents in the Secondary school, holding our class of 2019 Acción de Gracias ceremony, holding our annual Lap of Honour and preparing for our upcoming Awards Ceremonies! It is certainly exciting!

You can see pictures of the Lap of Honour on this link

This week we have also seen a wonderful example of our ABC ROCs in action! Eduardo Rodriguez , class of 2024 has initiated a recycling campaign and is working hard at raising awareness among our community regarding this important topic. You may have seen the huge recycling bins in the car park and I do hope we all support him! You can see him delivering assemblies for KS3 below. Well done Eduardo!

Awards Ceremonies
Please note that there have been changes to the schedule. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but as is the nature of a very busy school, we had to rearrange some events.

ALL parents are welcome at the ceremonies and we encourage you to attend to your child’s ceremonies to celebrate the achievements of all the class.

IF your child is receiving an award, we will make every effort to let you know via email prior to the assembly. We do ask for your understanding for the time as we need the reporting cycle to close to produce some awards and therefore the announcements may be close to the date of the ceremony. Thank you for your support.

We also held our whole school community farewell for our dear Director, Mr Keslake. It certainly took him by surprise and it was a wonderful event where we had the opportunity to say thank you and wish him, and Mrs Emmerson, all the best for their future. Our students spoke very warmly about him and I would like you to hear what they had to say in their words:

From Student Council President of the class of 2020- Ximena
“One of the greatest children’s books quotes, “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Indeed, it is, as we have come to say farewell to one of the most influential figures in our community for the last 5 years. Mr Keslake, Headmaster of the ABC since 2014, has decided that the time is right for him to take on a new challenge in his professional career. On behalf of the student community, we are thankful and fortunate for these years that Mr Keslake has been a part of the ABC community and appreciate all his commitment, devotion and hard work with the students, staff and families during his tenure. During his journey at the ABC, Mr Keslake has not only understood how to instill moral courage in students and prepare them as global citizens through our school values, but taught each individual that through resilience you can aspire anything you put your mind to. You’ve left a footprint here at the ABC with your kind support, joy and encouragement to students. Your wisdom, knowledge and your approachable manner will not be forgotten and I speak on behalf of the community when I say that you will always be welcome back to this small country which we hope you can call home . Without further ado, the student community wishes you the best of luck with your future and truly wishes that this is not a goodbye, but instead a see you later.”

From Head Students of the class of 2019- Clarisa Arteaga and Marco Samour
“Good morning, students, teachers, staff, parents association and board members. This morning we are all here commemorating the 14 year long journey of Mr. Keslake in school. There are no words to describe how thankful we all are for your hard work, dedication and love for the ABC community. We would also like to extend this thank you to Mrs. Julie Emmerson, that through her passion to science has made an big impact in the ABC. It is wonderful to see how the ABC community has come together to celebrate one of the best Directors the school has been privileged to have.

Mr. Keslake, you began your journey in school 14 years ago in which you have seen many generations graduate. On behalf of these past generations and the future ones who will continue your legacy, we thank you. It has been an honour for the school community to have you as a Director, we wish you the best in your upcoming journey in Egypt."
