35: Friday 31st May 2019

Words from the Director

We all had a shock in the early hours yesterday morning with the strong tremor. I talked to many children and staff many of whom agreed that they know what to do during an earthquake at school but not at home. In school we believe in learning from experience and so it is probably a good idea to talk with your children about how you reacted and what would you have done if the tremor had become more serious. DROP, COVER and HOLD On is good advice anywhere. In terms of safety, the priorities are to ensure you are safe from anything which might fall from the ceiling, like a fan or light fitting and away from anything like a bookcase which might fall. It is important to make yourself small and protection under a small table can be a good idea if the table is nearby. It is generally advised not to panic or run during the earthquake as you may be hit by falling debris. It is better to try to see the earthquake through in as safe a position and space as possible. This blog has some useful pointers to discuss

We continue to mark the graduation of the Class of 2019 with the Headmasters reception which includes an open invitation to all Exabrit but especially those celebrating a multiple of 5 years anniversary. Thank you to everyone who attends to welcome the class of 2019. It is an opportunity for all of us to remember what binds our community together and the importance of belonging to a values based community which prepares children to be responsible outstanding citizens.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend with your children. See you on Monday.

Sports

Our football teams have had excellent seasons in the College Cup with qualification to the final rounds for girls and boys teams. We have more games this weekend including our U16 boys in the semifinal. We are very proud of their achievements which will be celebrated in the lap of honour next week and the invitational Logros event.

Words from the Head of Primary

As we celebrate the last week of May, we are looking at a new school Value. The Value we are focusing on is ‘Open Mindedness.’ The strength of a school and indeed society is being tolerant of others views and beliefs. If there was more tolerance of each other then the World would be a better place.

Being Open Minded means being tolerant; respecting different views and diversity; willing to consider different ways to do something; Respectful of different ideas and cultures. As Michelle Obama said, “Just try new things. Do not be afraid. Step out of your comfort zones and soar.

How can we be Open Minded?

1. Fight the urge to react in anger when you hear differing opinions. ...
2. Avoid closing yourself off. ...
3. Place yourself out of your comfort zone. ...
4. Stay social and make new friends. ...
5. Do not be afraid to ask questions. ...
6. Avoid speculation/gossip.

Moving up day- Next Friday, 7th June, the children in Lower and Upper Primary will be having their moving up day. This is when the children spend time with their next academic teacher so that they can begin to get to know each other.

On June 5th to 7th, Grade 5 begin transitioning into Grade 6.

Book of the Week
Once Upon a Snowstorm by Richard Johnson

In this story told exquisitely entirely through pictures, a boy and his father leave their cosy home with its log fire and venture out into the snow-filled woods. The shapes of the snowflakes take the forms of running deer, flying birds and fleeing foxes. The pair get separated in the snowstorm and the animals of the forest come to the boy’s rescue, sheltering him in a cave.

Please check the dates below or the whole school calendar for the end of year assemblies when we recognise ‘Effort Leads to Success’. As mentioned in last week’s ABC weekly we will be awarding ROC Values awards this year.

Words from the Head of Secondary

Dear parents and carers,

This week has been marked by celebration as we said farewell to the class of 2019 with their traditional Senior Exit! We would like to congratulate the class for their behaviour during the day and thank all the parents and families who took time out of their schedules to come to support our children. It was a great day of reflection and looking back over the last 15 years at the ABC! A huge thank you to Anabella Soto for putting together the slideshow for our children and another huge thank you to Mr Alvin Silva who, with the help of our LRC staff, kindly put together a wonderful video for all to enjoy at the final assembly. I would also like to thank Ms Lourdes Guadron who came to say a few words to our class about when she met them back in Pre kinder! Finally, I must also shout out to Mr Hogan who, as Head of Year 12, has guided them through a very demanding year and has ensured our graduates have had all the support they need. His support even went as far as to also join in the Senior’s traditional jump in the pool… as did our Director! Thank you all!

Welcome to Secondary- G5 into G6
Message from: Ms Chávez

On Wednesday 29th of May we welcome Grade 5 students for an Empowerment morning, they met the G 6 - 8 Ambassadors and enjoyed some fun activities with them. Next week we will have our formal moving up days and also some more team building activities that will be lead by the prefects.

Here are some photos of the event. Please enjoy!

Inter tribe Dance competition
From Ms Estela Mena
The ABC has shown great skills, creativity and teamwork this week in our 2019 DANCE INTERTRIBE where students from 2nd to 8th grade worked in tribes to create a great show.

They have made up their own moves and performed in front of our panel of judges. We had lots of fun doing it whilst ideas and music filled the air. Congratulations to all because you were all winners in his event.

You can see pictures of the events here: https://pe-sw-abc.blogspot.com/

We are fast approaching the end of term and there are many award ceremonies and Parent Partnership events still on our calendar. Please take a moment to add these to your agenda and we look forward to seeing you at these events.

I hope to see many of you EXABRITS tonight at the Headmaster’s reception!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Kind regards,

Natalia Cáceres
Head of Secondary School
